I could go my entire life without trying a certain pop drink, too, and everyone could say I'm missing out. I will still die living a pretty good life without having tried that pop.

While I still play games with "retro" graphics and enjoy them immensely, I can understand those who only want to play a great game with kickass graphics. It's this elitist attitude people have that annoys me, whereas if anyone says the graphics are great and that they like the game in the same breath, they are immediately stoned and looked down on.

I listen to a retro podcast on Destructoid every week and, while I love to wax nostalgic about old games (hell, I have over a dozen classic game systems in my collection), I disagreed with some of their elitist views. While I agree that as a rule new games are easier than the older games, with tutorials to ease the player in, unlimited lives, etc., I disagreed that the old style is better. They are under the impression that you're not a real gamer unless you enjoy the old games that are as tough and frustrating as nails. Myself, I like games where you don't die, and if you do, you are placed nearly back at the same place you died. I still consider myself a real gamer.

Ah well, end of rant...

I agree with Jeku to a certain extent: I personally can't stand to play anything made before about 1990. But on the other hand, graphics are rapidly being improved upon every year (although the speed of this change was more noticeable a few years ago) and graphics form only one facet of the game. While I can see why bad graphics can just make you go "ugh", I also think that to enjoy some really fun games you have to put aside any really high expectations of graphics (eg. Halo 3 is acceptable, anything prior is unacceptable). I mean, System Shock 1 was one of the funnest games I ever played and it looks as bad as DOOM, but once you get into it you don't mind as much.

Really? I've never encountered such people. I like many games for their graphics. I can also like games for any other quality they might have. Like co-op. I place that as a quality of its own, since any game with co-op automatically becomes very fun (rarely come across any exception). But I'm not going to exclude playing any games that does not have co-op (or really bad co-op for argument's sake). It's just a good bonus, like graphics. I can do well without, but some people apparently can't.

However, what Jenkins does is judging a book by its cover. I guess one can understand why that would aggravate some people and cause debate. It's not elitist to want people to check inside the book before judging it, is it?

No, one can't compare a book to a game. Books all have different art on the covers, yet they all have just words on pages inside. A game's cover has actual screenshots of the game, and when you play it you are seeing those same images played back.

I honestly *try* not to judge a game by its cover, but I find it hard to believe all of the naysayers here never, ever pick up a game, look at the back, see the graphics look bad, and then put it back down without a second glance. It's human for us to be attracted to great graphics. Great gameplay can't be shown, it must be experienced, but pretty graphics can make you stop in your tracks.

I suppose when you're a gamer you look for what suits you and only you - it's odd to hear of people who only go for graphics (This is what it seems to me - Jenkins plays games to be wowed by a visual/interactive experience as opposed to a 'game' as such) - I imagine that'd remove the fun of it (personally), but I suppose when you think about it, who doesn't like having something more 'visual', whether that be looking at attractive girls or seeing a spectacular light show (like a Pink Floyd (or Aussie Pink Floyd) gig).

not to distract any one from this whole argument on graphics, but if i could ask a question from the game that this post was first made to share.

is there a list of things you make with what you need to make them?

i need a spade to dig out my well, it's all muddy. i have no idea what i need to make it.

got iron, made iron bar, stone hammer, and the rest of the odds and ends.

thanks for any help

Did Jenkins says as opposed to gameplay? I don't think he said he will play a good looking game if it has ludicrous controls and gameplay. He just said he looks for games with good graphics, but fun games at that.

I wasn't going to come back to this thread but I decided to take a quick peek and I'm kind of surprised. I was expecting loads of people yelling at me. I'm glad to see it's quite different.

I find graphics extremely important in a game, but I will play games with mediocre graphics. I just can't handle playing games with terrible graphics.

Seems like people don't know the definition of 'phenomenal' either lol. When on Earth did I say halo 3 was low end for me lol? I just said they aren't phenomenal graphics. They're good, yeah, but I didn't find them phenomenal.

Quote: "Jenkins, you seriously wouldn't play a really fun game if its graphics were sub par?"

I don't even recall saying I won't play games with sub par graphics. All I said is I won't play games with 'bad' graphics. That's a pretty big difference IMO.

Anyways, I'm glad to see that not everybody is still extremely mad at me lol. I do understand how that can upset many here because these are indy gamedev forums. Generally indy games aren't that great with graphics.

Quote: "Did Jenkins says as opposed to gameplay? I don't think he said he will play a good looking game if it has ludicrous controls and gameplay. He just said he looks for games with good graphics, but fun games at that."

Exactly lol. But it's also why there are only few games I like. There are thousands and thousands of games and I only like, like 6 games lol.

@ Jeku

First we need to understand that we are talking about "bad" graphics, which was recently made clear is a very relative term. Jenkins used Halo 3 as an example of his version of a game with bad graphics, or "not phenomenal", which seems to be his ultra-high standard.

Naturally, people can be put off by bad graphics if you know nothing about the game other than what you see from screenshots. Which is why noone has any trouble playing on old games they grew up with. But if people recommend it, saying it's fun. It wouldn't hurt to try it out? That was the issue here. I don't see why bad graphics alone should halt someone from ever contemplating the idea of playing the game if people recommend the game for its other qualities...

In fact, I'm enjoying playing an ASCII game called Dwarf Fortress which looks like this: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/screens.html

Jenkins, do not open link without safety goggles!

Yes I have ultra high standards lol.

Halo 3 was a bad example. I should change that. Let me change that to Fable instead. Fable doesn't have the greatest graphics but I love that game. Haha, that's definitely better.

I barely put my goggles on in time when I clicked the link to that Dwarf Fortress game lol. It could've blinded me.

It was considered great graphics when it first came out, so that's not really an argument.

Ya, actually it is an argument because right now, it isn't when it first came out. It actually came out a few years ago. That's like saying, "Goldeneye for N64 had good graphics when it came out so you can't say it has bad graphics."

How about you two go to THIS thread, and spam it about how realism makes games better. Now continuing with the topic at hand, about the game Stranded 2:

The forum's FAQ states that Multiplayer was originally going to be added but never was, so the multiplayer button doesn't do anything even if you enable it. Which is a shame, as the game has potential, but the scripting system sucks quite badly, someone should make a better version amirite.

and some one else had said something about making it in DB with multiplayer. probably wouldn't go over the guy the first made it, their forums refer to a "DC". also found some where on the forums, it might have been made with Blitz. don't know it, never seen it, but i'v heard about blitz on these forums before.

two more things. it's been years since i'v played it, but i swear those sheep are out of a old PS1 game, loony toons 'sheep raider'. played as coyote, remember using jetpack, that's about it. oh, and ralph was in it (the red-haired sheep dog).

other thing. IF some one does try to remake this, get the Massive Mod 2.0 mod, just follow direction in the notepad to install. first then you do, kill something, get the raw meat, and eat it. after you get over that play with it some, hammer is stone+stick+vine in MM2.0. alot of other stuff. also read about a Mod that makes the enviroment more life like (lion hunting monkey, kiwi hunting berrys).

to any one who has not played it, give it a shot. Like some have pointed it out it does not look next-gen, but for the style (minus the sheep) it isn't bad either. and some one put alot of work in to this; i'm pretty sure any one on the TGC forums here would be proud to release a game with such a following (though the moderator at their forums sounds like a #!@%. just read the FAQ and then tell our mod's how much you love them).

and would some body please tell me how to kill that damn shark??? i'm out of ideas, last one was throwing all my poison in the water before i tried to grab the note. does't work btw.

Sorry. I just deduced that from his argument.

Though I just hope graphics aren't the only deciding factor and I'd probably suggest to Jenkins to give a game a chance before making judgments based on graphics - there are some great games out there he's missing that he might find he likes. But only a suggestion, if graphics are that much of major part in his gaming experience, then I'm not going to force him against it - after all he plays games for himself, not anybody else. Nothing wrong with appreciating great graphics.

Quote: "Anyways, I'm glad to see that not everybody is still extremely mad at me lol. I do understand how that can upset many here because these are indy gamedev forums. Generally indy games aren't that great with graphics."

I don't think anybody's mad...or at least in the context you use the word...I probably could name a few 'mad people' here in general...Grandma for a start, he has a penguin army. I think it's just that people think a graphics central state of mind is a foolish one to have when looking for a game to play. (but as you seemed to have argued, it's a part of your 'gaming' experience) Some points maybe over the top or misinterpretations of your point of view. But for anybody to be extremely mad at you, well they need to get a life.

This wasn't on the same level but I killed a shark using a poison arrow before, it took a while for it to die but it worked. Though finding poison mushrooms on the first island isn't that easy, but on the 2nd island as you're on you can just kill a scorpion and you get 3, just make sure you had feathers prior to going there!

uhh, i just got out of the water instantly, and then you can see its fin coming out of the water. i just pumped 50 bolts in that general direction and killed it. there are sharks all around the island, but if you go in the water and jump right out they will try to chase you. then you can kill them with what ever you want, they are easy targets with there fins sticking out of the water.

Quote: "/me throws a pile of poo at Seppuku Arts"

if there was multiplayer you could eat a plum and do that. its really funny, i think they did that as a joke. you can poison your arrows with your poo.

Bergise i finished the game without that stupid guide, put it away.
the only thing i dont know how to make is potions. or at least i think... and congrats to finnishing the game, its a confusing one.

Anti Human: to make tools from iron use stick + iron + hammer, or make complex tools by using stick + iron bar + hammer. i actualy discovered the hammer thing by accident, i did not know how to make stuff untill i was constructing my hut on the first island, it would have taken forever without the axe.
ooh... i found out how to make that gold bow on the third level.
gold nugget plus thread plus hammer. interesting.

Interesting game - not addicted yet, but then I really haven't got into it...though killing monkeys is something I can dig...

Though I seriously hope there isn't a poo throwing mini-game, otherwise I'm quitting this forum and never coming back.

I guess you'll just have to use your imagination. It's hard at first, but after a while, you will adapt to understand it.

When it comes to graphics, I don't think I can go any lower. However, I doubt I can go any lower because of technical reasons.

Edit. Perhaps that game Jeku posted once... I think it was Jeku. Double-digit X Single-digit resolution?

He doesn't keep coming back to this thread, in fact he hasn't been here for 2 days, you're the one who just brought it back up so just talk about the game! If you want to talk about crap then get MSN or go to that thread I pointed to earlier.

That game?? This whole thread is about nothing but Stranded 2, if you don't like the graphics then just change the screen resolution to 160x120 and pretend you're playing Crysis from a distance, and the graphics might not be the best but they are certainly quite clear, did you even play it? It's far too easy to identify things from a distance as they are all using rather basic shapes and are colourful.

Perhaps I should go to a thread like this? and start spamming it saying how the cubes didn't look at good as the walls in Crysis so I didn't even think about trying it?

Thank you dark coder, my point exactly. (i used to be a tea spoon, changed it because hotmail gave up on my account) i bet about two thirds of the people who posted this thread have not even considered downloading stranded 2, let alone play it. so if anyone needs help modding or beating adventure or if you are having fun with the game please post about it.

Dark coder - I was referring to a game that GRANDMA, NOT the thread starter, posted. The ascII dwarf game? The stranded 2 game I can stand, the graphics are not that bad. Just responding to the game he posted, relax.

Anyway, I played a couple minutes of stranded 2 and I plan on getting hooked. I'll get around to more of it later.

well i actually think that compared to all other games this, yes, does deserve a 7 (if you are talking about out of ten) although compared to most free games i give a 9.5

you might be talking about the maturity rating of the game which in that case they are very wrong. i started letting my little brother play the game till i got to the 4th island and then i deleted it off his computer. i dont care much about him seeing blood and gore but the drugs? not ok.

oh, and please dont start an argument over blood, gore, and drugs in games. im not kidding.

Impossible? Thanks, that's my kind of game. I love a good challenge. At first I starved to death, but the second time, I actually killed something.

I'm adding this one to the collection.

Ok, but I'm on the third island, what kind of drugs are we talking about here?

I knew you would like it. Here is a tip if you find an l that changes colors don't hit it with melee use a ranged attack if you hit it, it will curse you if you are already cursed it will doom you. What dooming a cursing does is it lowers your hit rate i lost an uber character that way. and if you didn't know if you press ? you get the help menu. Study this and learn important commands

I'm a noob help will be accepted

j/k, there's nothing to it, just head back to pirate.

well, for scripting just copy and paste code from adventure mode. the scripting is really confusing. look at the code from the adventure mode levels in editor.

i think the campain is a good length if you have no idea what you are doing. i actuly built alot of stuff on the third island, it was just so ugly i had to leave it.

oh, the drugs are in the 4th island.

I didn't have time to read every post, so I'll just ask a quick question:
Was this made in DB? If not, what was it made in?
This looks pretty awesome, so I think I'll download it and try it out.

from what i can gather it was made with Blitz, guessing that's something in the ball park of DB but like i said earlier (not sure which page) i'd never heard of blitz before joining these forums.

others would know better then myself.

I've heard of blitz. My understanding of it is that you essentially make everything from scratch. You have to make all the commands on your own.

You're thinking of ASM. Blitz is DBP's unholy rival.
