The Second 2d Compo for the 2d Boards

Please don't be afraid of the title referring to the Third Dimension, but yes this is referring to the 3rd Dimension. The Compo settles on using 2d skills to make a texture for a 3d object, and too all those HIGH RES fans out there you'll be disappointed this compo will resort to making a texture under the size of 256x256 this can be done in anyway you want.

The Model for this compo can be any of the following...
A Phone
A Radio
A Crate
A Book
Weapons etc.
And the model itself must be under 100 polies.

Can't model anything under 100 polies? Give me a email and I'll try to set you up with a model for you to texture(Uv Map included)

Deadline is the 15th November.
Late Deadline is the 16th November.

Not yet, its like the original 3d Compos, Pride is all you get. But I'll see what I can get next time.

Edit: Like usual I'm late for the Newsletter application so it won't be in the Newsletter. So if you want to advertise it around the forums I'll whip up a quick sig.

Any rules against taking pictures of the object and using those for the texture? Because I stink at drawing realistic stuff on the computer

No you can't unless you took the images. But if its from CG Textures then it will be classed as cheating. But if you want just go onto paint zoom in for awhile then hit CTRL-G it will place a grid over the canvas then you can make a pixel texture.

That's what I was planning to do, thanks for clarifying.

I guess with 256x256 my unrealisticity woundn't show that much, but I'll try this first.

UV mapping compo ey? And you can make a crate? Under 100 polies? I might enter, crates are fun and easy to Uv-map, I do need all practice I can get... BTW, are we allowed to use normal maps, like making a high poly crate (with details and stuff) and then making one with under 100 polies?

Best.

Anything with details in Normal Maps must have the normal on the screenshot of the model, so we know it uses a normal map.

Best.

All 3 models well under 100 poly's. the texture maps are all 256x256.

To download the .x models and textures visit my Graphics buffet thread here..

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=85258&b=3&p=3

Ok, what do I win? if you browse that thread virtually ALL my models are under 100 poly's and use 256x256 texture maps. LOL

Just Kidding, I'm a professional Artist (reletively new to 3D texturing) but still consider myself exempt from this contest.

Note: I cheated on the med kit.. the bottom has the same texture as the top, but the bottom is never meant to be seen.

Cheers!

EDIT: Just to show how changing the texture map can make an object look like a new type of ammo, I redid the shotgun shell to be a round of energy ammo. One could easily make a yellow-red gradient for plasma ammo, and a white to dark green for poison ammo. But I'll leave that to anyone else who wants to experiment with the texture map.

Cheers V2.0

Hey David. Could it be alright if people can use your models to retexture for the compo?

I have no problem with people giving any of my models a new texture. That's where the fun is,.. not everyone can make simple models and a decent UV map, so feel free to retexture any of my models.

Note: I always save my .x files in text format so that I can easily load the .x file into notepad and change the target filename for the texture. Most of my programs prefer .bmp, but Bryce (which I use to make sample renders) prefers .jpg for textures.

Take the shotgun shell for example, the 'Energycell' version is the exact same .x file (copied and renamed) and a new texture bitmap assigned to it via notepad.

Anyways. Have fun, that's what counts

Cheers!

Gah, looks like I'm running a bit late. I put this together just this afternoon, I think it turned out quite good though.

Made it in Blender, UV'ed with Lithunwrap, and textured in Photoshop with pictures I took of a radio I found around the house.

80 Triangles, 256x256 texure.

Download the model and .bmp texture, attached.

I don't think there will be a next one. 2d Boards are usually dead. So to be honest these won't get anywhere.

The first one did actually get quite a few entries, I think this one was just quiet because of the 3D aspect that people didn't want to get involved in.

Hmm, 2D...I've always wanted to try making an animated sprite (not necessarly a person). Maybe that could attract more of the 2D artists around here.
