greetz, all.

i recently bought a new computer; my first Vista machine. so, i DL a demo from the WIP section here and, yeah... ... nothing to extract it with.

i had used "Extract All" for many years, and was happy enough with it, but it was far from perfect (granted, the version was probably 5-6 yrs old). alas, a google for "rar extract all" wasn't much help. and, with a new system, i don't want to start cluttering things up with a dozen "maybe/let me try this" installations...

so, any advice on a freeware rar/zip/all application? if possible, a vista-friendly app would be ideal (i'm still trying to make friends with vista myself. i don't want to start any more trouble than i have already.... yet!).

thanks much

I've always used WinRAR . Not entirely sure if it works on Vista though since I don't have it.

thanks for the quick response, but WinRAR doesn't appear to be freeware (40 day trial) and i'm not yet convinced i'll have to pay for file compression/extraction.

(added bold to 'freeware' in the initial post now for clarification )

I've still been able to use WinRAR after the 40 day trial, just a little window comes up telling you to buy the full version after the 40 days are over, but you can just close the window and continue extracting as you would normally.

This one is fairly good:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Supported formats:
Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR
Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

As said above all that it does is make a little tiny window pop up that you can easily close. It doesn't do anything else to the software.

Yep, I been using the evaluation version for years. I hardly even notice the reminder, nor has it ever caused problems.

izarc is the best. It's 100% free and it works with RAR files.

I recommend 7-Zip. It's amazing. I've also had very minimal experience with iZarc. It was alright, I just haven't used it much.

Another vote for 7zip. I too was using winrar for a long time until I discovered just how awesome 7zip is.

(That, and I had to unarchive some 7z files)

I definitely recommend IZArc. As JoelJ says, its completely free (no nag screens), fully Vista compatible and supports just about every archive format there is (including RAR, 7-ZIP, ZIP, CAB, TAR, GZ, UUE etc. etc.).
It will even let you open ISO, BIN, CDI and NRG CD images and extract their contents or convert them to another CD image format. It integrates nicely with Windows Explorer too so right clicking on a file gives you an IZArc menu.

I really don't recommend 7zip. I used it for a bit, and really didn't work very well. It was slow and crashed. I've really never had a problem with IZarc

Really? I've used it exclusively for over a year now, and I've only had it crash after making a stupid decision (like using 200MB of RAM for compression on a 128MB RAM computer ).

7zip isn't slow or crashy at all over here, and I've been using it for some pretty intense compression... and the 7z format just kicks ass.

Either you're incredibly unlucky and have the 1 single hardware configuration in the world that it doesn't like, or you're doing something wrong.

I'm a die-hard 7zip user but I will convert to IZarc because I need to convert disc formats on the fly. Thanks for the tip!

went with izarc mainly because of the additional format support over 7zip.

thanks all. now go make a game, compress it, and let me put this app to work

IZArc handled tar.gz badly when I tried to use it - it wouldn't enter the gzipped file in the tar file without extracting it first, so I stayed with 7zip. Also I hate the IZarc website a lot.
