Hi all.

I'm buying a new Hard drive(I have the space in my machine), but I don't know if the one I'm looking at is compatible with my machine.

Here is the HD I have.
[href]null[/href]http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148039

Here is the one I'm looking at:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136073&cm_sp=DailyDeal-_-22-136-073-_-Product

I thought it looked like a good deal, 60 bucks for 500gb.

The main thing I'm worried about is the connection, the one I'm looking at has a 3gb/s connection, while my other one is only 1.5gb/s

Is there a new cable or something for the that may not work with my motherboard? In other words, will it be compatible?

Here is my case/motherboard
[href]null[/href]http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101456

and there it says

IDE ATA 1 x ATA 100
Serial ATA 2 x SATA 150
SATA RAID RAID 0/1

Thanks in advance.

Should work just fine with your motherboard, unless I'm missing something.

It will work fine but you may have to move a jumper on the new drive to force it to sata 150 mode. Some drives will auto-detect, some need a jumper to run at the lower speed. Don't worry about the motherboard not being as fast as the hard drive, it won't max out a sata 150 connection anyway.

Thanks guys.

As for this jumper thing, does that involve re-adjusting the pins?

The nice thing about sata is its backwards and forward compatible, same cable.

For the jumper, it'll usually have a picture on the harddrive. All you have to do is place a shunt over a different pin, takes 2 seconds.(longer if you have big hands and no tweezers)

Alright cool, thanks.

One more thing, I don't know if my power supply is compatible. I've got 250 watts(which is rather small, correct?) so I need to check that out too.

what is this 250W power supply currently powering? it should be fine under normal conditions it's just the startup load I'm concerned about. Hard disks only draw large(ish) currents when they spin up.
Low power graphics and a non P4 cpu and you shouldn't have a problem. I'm pretty sure you'll be fine if you've not had any bad experiences with it so far.

[edit] just checked your "mobo" link, in fact it's a shuttle barebones system to save others the hassle of looking. Assuming you're running off the integrated graphics then you'll have no problems power wise. (The only problem I've had with these systems in the past is them suffocating with fluff inside, occasional hoover/clean-out solves this.)

Currently its powering a Pentium 4 cpu, and an ATI radion 1600 card.
So maybe I don't have enough power?

EDIT:I'll provide links asap

If you only have a 250 watt power supply powering the P4 and a Radeon 1600 I'd recommend upgrading that as well. You can get nice 500watt power supplies for under $40 at newegg.

not that will fit in a shuttle he wont...

and getting a beefier shuttle power supply could be a problem.

a hard disk only draws a few watts so it should be fine if he's not got power problems already.

Thanks guys.

Just in case you need it, processor

Graphics card(if you wanna call it that):

So it seems pretty safe to order now?

thanks for the help again.

Hopefully this summer I'll be able to build a new machine, and this time, a bigger one.

3GHz cpu TDP 84W
allow 40W for mobo chipset etc + psu inefficiency (edging on the safe side)
pci-e graphics with no external power = 75W max (not sure if the board is agp but it still can't draw more than 75W anyway)

=
200W

50W will safely cover a couple of hard disks and a disk drive

so yeah you're good to go
