Presenting...

A series of playable tutorials guiding you throw everything you need to know in order to make excellent levels for your game. Too often have we seen new-users, and some older ones too, make classic mistakes in their level design. Too often has the wrong segment been used, the wrong music been played, or the wrong type of level has been chosen.

Not anymore.

This one stop shop will allow player to play through game levels, both good and bad, in order to teach them not only the how to make a good level, but also how not to make a bad one. Levels will cover a variety of topics, and hopefully teach the player everything they need to know. Many of these techniques and skills will be transferable to any game engine, not just FPSC. So, if you're a DBPro user, don't be put off. This will still be for you.

Right, now the promotional stuff is out of the way...

I'm sort of doing this a little out of sequence at the moment. I've started by making level 2, which teaches the player about various level layouts.

Here are some pics:

There is something that may interest you, or not. I will send via email.

Well, it's been a fair while since my last update, and it's not all been because of college and parties...

I have actually been working really hard on this next bit. I've decided to break up this second level into smaller, more managable chunks. So, what I have been working on is technically level 2D.

Level 2D teaches the player about a style of layout in the level called a 'hub', where the player must return to a certain point several times during the course of the level.

To make a 'hub', I thought long and hard about what sort of Hubs there are in real life, and came up with the idea of a small square. I should explain now that 'Guru' will showcase many different genres and styles of level to keep things both interesting and original. Because I love Italy, and was bitterly disappointed diximonil's Pro Pack: Venice never came out (search the showcase forum), I've decided to make a level set in Italy. This means making a fair amount of custom content. It's not all been put into FPSC yet, but here are some pics of what I've done so far:

Bare in mind that this is a Work In Progress, so it's nowhere near done yet, but it's still pretty nice

Anyways, that's probably it until after Christmas.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Havn't had a chance to forward you mail. The topic is around by searching though. I hope that you are running tests, I'm sure you would know what I am refering too being a tut for other users. Unless you are aiming for level design I am unaware of.

Have a good xmas.

There should be entities in the middle of that courtyard, such as a fruit market or something, the space looks to open.

Thanks! I wanted to break things up a little and show that FPSC can do outdoor areas. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy it!

I don't quite understand that; what topic? If you've got time, you can E-Mail me, I'd love to take a look...at...whatever it is...

I'll admit that I don't have an amazing record on actually releasing games BUT this one features such a variety of settings and genres, I'm not going to get bored

Well, it is a work in progress, but yes I understand. I'm hoping to get a nice fountain in the middle, and a bit more decoration around the courtyard.

Right, now the fan mail is out of the way...

UPDATE:
After Christmas, I decided to take a break from Italian courtyards and test out some stuff for level 2C. The tests went so well that I plunged in to making the first part of the level this morning.

Level 2C (along with all 4 of the level 2s) teaches the player about branching paths in a level i.e. making the player choose which route to take through the level. This is represented as a simple choice of 'take the stairs or take the elevator'. It should be noted also that I always start one of these levels by letting the player go through a "what not to do" level, then letting them play through the "this is the way to do it" level (the same level, but reworked for greater effect). As such, I've only built part of the "what not to do" level, but the screenies look promising.

I've spent several hours making a set of custom car-park segments for this level, which (hopefully) will be available as a purchasable pack on The Game Creators Store!

Now for another slice of this so called 'portal cake':

Well, that's all for now.

New Year everyone!

Hi, yeah shall do.
The topic is about mass editing with in the editor. I thought it was fixed, yet I found the array problem is still present.
Also I was referring to, if you have ran player weapon and a character model in the max scene size you have shown? And if you don't mind sharing your results or specs if you have done so.

edit: here you go.

My PC got a virus on New Year's eve, which stopped production for while. I'm tinkering on a rather special level right now

Expect a demo within a week

Looks Great, You've taken advantage of the lighting in fpsc to bring out more quality. Just needs entities to fill the scene. Apart from that the level design is looking great.
The second screen shot from your first post looks amazing.

Ok, so I promised you all a demo by now.

Unfortunately, FPSC didn't like the level in question, and keeps failing to build it. I even went as far as copied and pasting the entire level and then changing all the entities back to static. The new version got corrupted or something because it doesn't like spawned model pack 4 characters with weapons...even though it was fine with it a week or so ago.

Anyways, I've published the most up-to-date version of the level that FPSC would build; it's my entry in to the horror level design competetion over at FPSC chat. It's called 'Acid Factory'.

Here's the thread, which contains a link to the demo and screenshots:

Enjoy!

I am interested in this as well. It's a lot easier to learn when you're doing it while someone is showing you.
I am sure it will be a success just like the Animator tutorial.
