Well I know you may hate to think this (I like to think its awesome), but Windows still controls the market of computers and Windows 7 will support multi-touch monitors. Now I am not saying the mouse will be replaced, but wont it be cool if company's start to support that making cheaper and cheaper multi-touch monitors. Making art would be so fun, heck looking at photos would be a blast. Now the reason I think they will become cheap is because look at how windows affects peoples PC this may not be everyone, but lots of people want the latest and greatest not even knowing what the heck it does (my school uses vista , but really does not take advantage of it in any way) and then company's would start selling the monitors and people would buy them and think yes now I am up-to-date with my computer. I think that I would completely give up my mouse for a full multi-touch monitor and a stylus I like them so much more better (pen flicks are nifty on my tablet) and so much more could be available with the flow of using what resembles well...anything that writes it could be a virtual pencil, pen, brush, or whatever. Your thoughts on this?

I'm just imagining working with my hands in front of my all day.
it's not going to become dominant. It just isn't.
There's a lot of sweet uses for touch screen, but for general computer, it just isn't practical.

I just finished a really cool touch screen application at work, a piece of machinery that prints wiring masks onto silicon wafers - completely automated, select the recipe on a touch screen and away you go.

We used a tiny little mini-pc, it's actually a bit like a PSP but a full PC with a touch screen. It's the cutest PC ever, even cuter than those 7'' laptops.

PC's are getting even smaller, touch screens are getting cheaper, it won't be long before your PC is just a panel on the wall.

this touchscreen looks like it works a heckuva lot better than that silly HP touchsmart.

I see what you mean but an arm rest could easily be designed for extended periods of use.
For artistic purposes this would be fantastic and much faster and intuitive as you're using both hands.
Has anyone thought about using two mice at a time?

I actually sold a TouchSmart to someone at work last week. Pretty cool hardware. Am sad in hindsight, though, no more playing chess during work.

This stuff has been around for a while, like he said. I do personally think it should be the future in computer technology, eventually it will come down in price and availabilty. Yeesh, imagine Zbrush with this thing.

Who's to say your computer can only have one screen, and that's the one you touch? Perhaps they can make a computer that has a touchscreen in the keyboard's place, and you use it to type and as a mouse, and you have a second monitor above it in the normal spot. It could also be a touchscreen that you can use if you need something moved about.

The computer could even move the keyboard as your hands drift around and everything.

the problem with that is we're so dependent on how our keyboard feels when we type. and how often do you rest your hands on the keys?

Use tactile feedback tech and/or pressure sensing so as not to register light taps.

I think this, combined with voice recognition could be huge. You wouldn't need to type words any more.

Click on the address bar and say "www.google.com". Palm the window and drag it to the side and check your calendar. Zoom in on the day by using two hands and dragging the window bigger. Or if you want to use one hand, take your thumb and forefinger on the screen and spread the fingers out to zoom in.

How cool would that be?

Having to work with touch screens every day at work I don't particularly see them replacing a mouse or keyboard until they can provide tactile feedback. They're cool and all, but actually quite uncomfortable to use for extended periods of time, tapping against a hard flat surface.

Yeah, I don't see it as being an end to the keyboard and mouse. I for one most likely could not type accurately without any sort of tactile feedback. It also hurts to smack a hard surface with your fingertips after awhile.

Doing these motions is actually quite tiring. I wouldn't be able to sit in front of a pc for extended amounts of time with my hands out in front of me like that.

Now, I DO want to see this thing come about. I'd love to be able to have the option to use a multitouch screen. There are benefits, but I don't see it being a good enough replacement for the mouse and keyboard in all situations.

It would be sweet for art work though. It'd be neat if it could be set to a stylus mode as well so it could be a giant art canvas that works like a wacom tablet with pressure sensitivity and all that good stuff. I know it already does that with your fingers and stuff, but if you are using it as a drawing pad, you'll most likely make contact with the screen with your hand or wrist or arm or something, thus possibly confusing the stylus. Dunno. Artwise, it has really cool possibilities. I'd love to get one of these things with Photoshop or a 3d art package.

That's another thing. I could see a stylus being used, and the mat could sense the difference, and only take input on the stylus, and you could lift your hand to the monitor to choose or move stuff around. I could see a dual touchscreen system being very intuitive and comfortable.

well, I think we all have a habit of using a mouse and it's not a good habit because it's to simple the touch screens you can flick and it opens a program I meen how cool is that? its a lot easier to do simple tasks with tablets and touch screens but I think we have become to accustom to a mouse.

I bet I can do it much faster with a mouse than you can pressing a screen.

I agree with Benjamin. Have you ever used a Touchsmart or any other touch screen device? It can be very tiring after long periods of time. Just like the wii-mote. It can be really cool, yeah, but it's not always as efficient as a normal controller or keyboard and mouse.

The best way to go is to use a combination of all your tools.

Would not like to use a touch screen in a FPS, that is for sure. A keyboard and mouse control there works better.

Using a touch screen sure would give you a good workout though.

Yeah, move fingers left or right to strafe, tap a second finger to move forward and... is it just me, or is it just easier with wasd+mouse control?
