There isn't a DS board, so posting here.

Just bought and installed Dark Shader and it crashes whenever I run it!

Has anyone else had this problem??
I cleaned installed DBPro from the CD and updated to 7.1, and it still doesn't work. Display drivers are up to date and everything, DX 9.1c installed.

If it helps, the same thing happens if I update to the newest version of Dark Physics and use a physics command (the program crashes when you call phy start). DP version 1.0 works fine.

DBPro on it's own works fine as well, including using shaders.

Is there any way of getting a more detailed error report?

-------

Don't know if it's relevant but DBPro is installed to D:\DBPro and DS to D:\Dark Shader. I also have Dark GDK installed - that works fine.

I suggest you email Paul Johnston with your system specs. He'll probably know the solution straight away.

I use XP at the moment and haven't had any such problems with Dark Shader.

Are you using Vista? That style of window is unfamiliar to me.

most likely a compatibility issue with vista or something...

If at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0.

Just did a clean install of Vista, and it still doesn't work.

This is ridiculous.

Yeah - that was someway higher up the list than 'reinstall the operating system'

I suppose it is possible that it just flat out doesn't work on Vista. If that's true then I will be pretty annoyed. They can refund the money but they can't refund this day I have wasted.

I'm running Vista, but I don't remember if I ever got it working. I'll try and install it, and post back here in a minute.

EDIT

It works perfectly fine, so Vista is definitely not the problem here...

Ah! What can it be then??

Is there any way of getting more detailed debug info?

Strange. I thought I'd replied to that last night. Must have have been tired and forgot to actually post the message before closing down.

Anyway, I've emailed Paul and suggested he has a quick look at this thread (I didn't realise his email wasn't public when I posted earlier).

I hate these obscure system specific things - they can take ages to track down and are infuriating. I can only sympathise with your predicament.

Ok, so I wiped the hard drive and reinstalled Vista from scratch again.

It still crashes but now it is giving me more information...

Dark Shader.exe crashes with this debug info:

And "Dark Basic Professional P" (which is the preview window I guess) crashes with this debug info...

"DBProBasic3DDebug.dll_unloaded" what does that mean?

The second error is "normal" I think - my DS runs fine until its time to close it, then I get exactly the same error. I`m using Vista too - 64bit Premium

Im pretty sure its your GPU then. It may be incompatible with Dark Shader.

64 bit... Maybe that is a problem?

Just been re-thinking this through(oh no) - I `m pretty sure I had this problem once, around the time of the Dark Physics update, I`m not saying that its Dark Physics, but I seem to recall trying to get CUDA working and installed it wrong - think I installed the newer beta stuff without the correct physx version - IIRC the link provided by Newsletter wasn`t where I found the correct solution, can`t remember 100% though as some worked better than others. Anyway I kept getting the same crash with "Phy Start", when I finally got it sorted I tried to apply shaders to soft bodies. When I found out that only shaders that generated UV`s worked succesfully, I opened up Dark Shader to see which ones in DS did this. This is when it crashed, I then went through the process of discovering which drivers where best for both DS and DP. Couldn`t find one that got rid of the error when closing the application, but at least it all works now. Maybe the drivers provided for your card aren`t working 100% yet - is it brand new? What card is it btw?.

It is an integrated card. Intel 945GM, it is actually not that bad - it can run every shader I had tried with it (from DBPro), perfectly happy with SM3.0

Hmm... maybe it is the card, it is just annoying because it can run shaders fine.

Have you tried running under 6.4 instead of 7.1? You never know, it might work.

Have you tried compiling commands that are from Dark Shader in DBP?

Yeah, they compile fine, although the fullscreen shaders don't work - the image from the camera is either all white or all black.

Oblivion is well known for compatability problems. My old machine ran it well - Sempron 64 3000, ATI X1300 128mb - my newer machine also runs it well - Core2Quad 2.4, Nvidia 8800GT 512mb - but there are sooo many graphical issues, no matter which drivers I use.

I`m pretty sure thats down to the export feature not being 100% - I recall Green Gandalf pointing out the issue of some constants that said "ViewSize" should have read "InvViewSize" either in one or more of the shader files and/or project file. In fact there were a few issues for both object based shaders and fullscreen shaders though a lot of them related to world values in DS being different to DBP.

James H might be right. I'll try to remember to post back with a "working" fullscreen shader demo which uses the new Dark Shader DBPro commands.

Won't be soon though - I'm cooking tonight and IT IS NEW YEAR'S EVE!

Are you using 32bit or 64 bit Vista?
If you run Preview.exe on its own do you get the same error?
If you rename Preview.exe and run DarkShader.exe on its own do you get the same error?

I DID remember - but posted it on a different thread. This forum can get complicated at times.

The demo is here (but I know Chris K has seen it - and it works):

@ Paul

Yes, same crash when running Preview.exe by itself, and when running Dark Shader with PreviewRENAMED.exe

I can happily compile commands from ShaderData.dll
