Hi,

I've got this application called Natura Sound Therapy 3. It has something in it called a Brain Syncroniser. Basically, what this does is to play sound waves, along with complimentary sound effects. These waves are meant to put your brain in certain states. Like Beta waves are meant to help you concentrate, Theta waves are meant to help you relax etc.

So, I thought I would give this Brain Sync a try with my revision for my exams in January. I always had a problem with concentrating on writing + learning my notes, but with this on, using headphones, I found it much easier to concentrate. It thought it was a miracle, but I wonder...

Does this actually work, or is it my mind thinking that it is working (you know, like when you pretend that somebody is taking miracle medicine and they get better, when it was really some false tablets etc).

What are your thoughts on this?

Cheers,
Bozzy

To find the app:

Well my guess is that it works like music, some music or even sounds (like the sea) can affect your state of mind - a slow operatic voice can really make me relaxed. So I guess it's possible. As far as concentration, I find some music helps me concentrate better - usually bands like Anathema - you know Doom metal and perhaps some post rock. (Sigur Ross, 65 days of static...) Basically anything that is progressive in some way or another. But for me music has to zone everything else out - so either play it loud, or through headphones.

So my first guess, is 'yes'. I'm downloading the software as I have work to do myself and give it a shot, after all I am one of these people who does have difficulty concentrating.

If you do want to give it a try, I really suggest looking at the help manual because it explains to you exactly what the factory presets do (I would use them).

I've tried this stuff before. I used a free trial of iDozer. It didn't work for me, but I may not have been doing it right. I think I need to zone out a bit more while doing it.

I'm under the understanding it works a little like hypnotherapy, it works only on the weak minded or those that are succeptable to placebo pills.
I still think that a huge part of a patients recovery during any illness is due to good spirits and wanting to get better, the mind is an amazing thing.

I don't know if it applies to 'weak' minded, you just need to be able to 'zone' out, this is what I've done with music and it has always helped me concentrate, different music does different things for me - it seems I can concentrate better when programming with loud music, but with writing, something smoother works better - even Opeth (though they're not always that smooth, but the music is progressive, and that helps too). I guess it's a weird one, but I'm assuming the same sort of principle applies here.

The placebo effect has been proven to have impressive results on the mind/body from tricking the mind into believing the effect to be real. Kind of like spiritual healing and whatnot takes advantage of. I think everyone is susceptible to the effect on some level. It's not a bad thing if it works as you got what you wanted. Though different music certainly can make me more relaxed like the previously mentioned sigur ros does, but I'm not sure if music ever makes me more concentrated. It usually does the opposite.

I think it depends on the music - or the person, I mean I think better when there's music playing in the background, as long as the music isn't distracting - you know funky beats, quick changing music, catchy lyrics.

I agree with you, Seppuku! I generally listen to music that will match my mood or while I'm reading a book I'll listen to the built-in radio on my MP3 player. Usually the music will reflect my current mood. Recently I was in sort of a bad relationship (only bad because the girl told me she had never loved me, she just wanted to make me happy), and so I've been listening to music that reflects that mood: 80's. Yep, 80's. Steve Winwood's song Higher Love applies in this case, and describes exactly what I'm feeling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=524Tf0dNRNw

Music somehow has this uncanny ability to express emotions and either make people feel happy or angry. I try to listen to the lyrics of a song as opposed to just the main riffs, after all that's where the real message lies (though it certainly helps when the song is catchy! ).

Anyway, to stay on-topic, I think this is a highly interesting claim by these people. It certainly does seem possible, but I ask the same question you do Bozzy: is it all just in my mind? I don't know, it could be, or it could not be.

Is this forum all in your mind? Is reality but a dream? Are pixies even real? If they aren't, then where do pixie sticks come from?

Sorry, I'm usually strange at this hour.

I used the software when doing work earlier - just to test these claims, it makes good background noise, but it really just seemed like listening to music, except you could have a constant stream of sounds, unlike music, which likes to change.

I'm going to try it now. And from what I understand of these things is it may take a few times for you to notice a difference.

And I don't think "weak minded" is correct. If you have a strong imagination, can lose yourself (let go), not need to feel fully in control at all times, your open minded, you have a far better chance at this type of therapy and hypnosis.

So if when you read a book you can picture the characters, and the scene. You would have a better chance at this working then someone who just reads the words.

Now if you can not only see the scene and characters, but you can see all the colors in the scene, you hear the scene, feel the warmness/coolness or textures in the scene, can associate smells/tastes of the scene, and perhaps you can attribute traits to characters (that aren't even written) than you are at the highest chance of something like this working.

========
Ok so I tried this app out for about 45 minutes after I came home from work. I mainly had it on the energy boost preset, and then tweaked some of the volumes. For about 15 minutes, I had all the other ambient sounds off and just tuned into the brainwave synchronizer. (yeah it can sound annoying at first, but I got used to it).

So I have to admit when I came home I was fairly tired. More like lethargic, feeling kind of shot, slight headache, and a pressure feeling behind my eyes. I easily felt like falling into the couch, and spending some time zoning out to the T.V.

Now you don't have to believe me, but after listening to this quirky app for 3/4 of an hour, I actually felt a lot better. I made myself something to eat, emptied out the dishwasher, came back to pack my clothes for a trip I'm taking tomorrow at 4:00am. Then went and cleaned two offices (side business). I came back and now I still feel focused and I am going through some posts.

I'm not convinced yet, but I have to admit that for whatever reason I did feel like doing stuff that I normally would have procrastinated doing. I had every intention on going straight to sleep and cleaning the offices before I left. Now I have to see if the before bedtime preset will help me ease off to sleep. I honestly feel like working on my game, but probably not smart to drive on such little sleep.

I will try this out for the next few days, and see if I can document how I am feeling before and after. Perhaps it's just from thinking about feeling better, deep breathing and letting my mind drift. I would like to also do a comparison if the frequencies that are suppose to effect brainwaves makes a difference compared to just doing the same thing with the ambient sounds.

If it really works, regardless of the "true" reason I think I will be purchasing the full version. I know that as scientific and sceptic as many of us on the forum are, it's sounds crazt... but could this actually be doing what it claims?

My intention wasn't to offend, it was to point out what many psychics and hypnotherapists have already said many a time. Maybe weak minded was the wrong thing to say but its just those that are succeptable to certain things, that stronger minded people would not...

Shizzle, i'm digging myself a hole.
