Time Warner Cable and MTV networks are having a feud... and it's going to end up effecting us, the consumers. As of January 1st -- tomorrow -- we might lose MTV and all of the channels they own, including Comedy Central, SpikeTV, Nikelodeon, and several others. Why? Because MTV, whose ratings has been declining for years now, is going to charge TWC a new rate that's "nearly triple" the rate they were charged before. Here's the full story on the TWC site.

Granted, the only station I really care about is Comedy Central (my girlfriend watches Nick at Nite), but there's only a small handful of shows I watch. Daily Show/ Colbert Report and Sarah Silverman on Comedy Central, a bunch of BBC shows, and Entourage and Flight of the Conchords on HBO. But if you take away comedy central, that's sort of like a third of what I watch on TV . Just figured I'd give TWC customers a heads-up in case you hadn't heard about this yet.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Life without Comedy Central isn't life at all!

[edit] Wait, everything is okay because it doesn't effect the cable I have lol.

Its actually Viacom. But they own MTV. And VH1. And like 14 channels. Basically its stupid, because now I'm losing comedy central.

Edit - My bad, apparently the bundle or whatever is called MTV networks.

MTV is crap. I don't have it anymore, but they only have reality shows and celebrity worship sludge. Good riddance. As for the other channels you mentioned, Viacom will have to lower their prices if they want to be shown I guess.

Hooray Jeku, you are awesome for saying that.

Anyhow. Yeah, basically, Viacom wants something absurd done. It would mean us paying more. And Time Warner Cable knows this. They also know how outrageous it would be to raise prices in an economy such as ours right now. At least, that's Time Warner's argument.

NO FREAKING WAY.

Comedy Central is basically the only channel I watch, I get all my news from the internet.

If that happens, I'm going to punch Time Warner in the face.

Wouldn't MTV be more to blame than Warner?

Perhaps they could stop airing other channels no one cares about to make the paycheck. Say perhaps, G4? ZING!

No really though, that would suck, I love comedy central.

Well if you have an extremely popular channel (Comedy Central) And many people watch it why not make yourself more money

Like lets say a New band forms and play shows for $200 what if they became a huge success, Do you think they will still only charge $200 per show? No way in Hell! So maybe that's MTV's mindset.

You can watch most of that online now anyway. Why bother with cable?

Seems like a silly feud, surely MTV would want the ratings of Warner instead of disappointing a big group of their viewers.

I watch Nick and Comedy Central, but I'm in the UK and am with Sky, so I could sit here making a mockery of you all, but it's the new year and a time when people should generally be nicer towards their peers.

But MTV would do something like this. It doesn't surprise me. Bunch of whores. Lol

It's the second of January and Comedy Central is still on... maybe they succumbed to the nasty email I sent MTV about how no one has an ounce of respect for their network anymore, and how killing Comedy Central for TWC customers would only further devalue them, and how they shouldn't take out their poor ratings on consumers as opposed to firing their programming staff and going back to music videos. More likely, though, they got some sort of extension, lol.

I'm pretty angry at Time Warner too, though. They must have known about this for months, or so I'd assume anyway. Why did they wait until the very last second to warn their customers that they could possibly be losing channels? My money says they didn't want to lose customers to DirectTV, so they withheld that information from us . Do you know what that makes me want to do? Get DirectTV. But I need Road Runner internet and won't/ can't settle for DSL, so I'm sort of out of luck.

Well ya, that's how business works

They were probably hoping to cut a deal and not have to worry little ol' us with the details.

See, I think they should have warned people that something might happen as soon as they knew about it. They have a monopoly on cable... if I don't want TWC, I have to get satellite, and living in a city that gets more rain than Seattle (or so they say) and a place where we get hit by Nor'Easters ("winter mini-hurricanes" for those of you who don't get them), satellite isn't a good option for me, not if I plan on watching Boxing Day footy anyway . If you're going to dominate a region, lobbying for legislation that forbids other cable companies to move into your area, then you should assume responsibility for upholding the best interests of your customers well before the interests of share holders. The same goes for New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Con-Edison power... if you monopolize a region and then take advantage of consumers, you need to be shut down imho. If they'd warned us in advance as opposed to doing it the day before the potential shut-off, I would have only been mad at MTV. Ugh, corporate mentality is nothing short of awful. But hey, what can I do about it .
