So what were everyone's favorite movies this year? Mine in order:

1) Dark Knight-An excellent sequel to another great film. Awesome special effects and a good story. Heath Ledger's The Joker is quite possibly the best acting I've ever seen, and I'm not just saying that because he's dead.
2) Iron Man-Another great superhero movie this year. Tony Stark is brilliant, arrogant, and hilarious, setting him apart from characters in other superhero stories. Great story that weaves into our modern world quite well.
3) Valkyrie-A drama that quite accurately retells the little-known story of one of the attempted assassinations of Hitler by some of his own officers. Good acting and a suspenseful story make this faithful recreation of unsung martyrs of WWII top the list.
4) Vantage Point-A well-done action thriller pieces together the assassination of the president by showing the event through various interwoven vantage points. An interesting concept that is carried out well with a plot full of twists but remains easy to follow.
5) Slumdog Millionaire-This recent independent film has quickly gained popularity because of the unique manner in which it tells the story of a poor boy growing up in the slums of India through his experience on India's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"

Seriously? Seriously? I thought he was great but not Oscar caliber and definitely not the best ever.

I've seen a lot of movies from 2008 but can't single any out for shoutouts. I'll think on it for a few days and come back to this thread

If you compare the joker to some of his other characters, his acting is far better.
I think the best actor in the recent Batman films has to be Gary Oldman. He is such a good character actor.

Tropic Thunder should slot into that list somewhere. It actually exceeded my expectations (Considering it was a Ben Stiller movie). Very funny indeed.

Also Wall E was brilliant. I must have watched it 20 times since getting it on BluRay.

Just a few others:

Quantum of Solace

Hancock

Don't kill me for saying this but....Twilight.
I actually really really enjoyed that, even if I had to endure my girlfriends remarks about how hot Edward Cullen is...women.
But good movie, really good

Death Bell - horror, though that's not my kind of movie, I still thought it was worthy on the list.
Max Manus - just because it's norwegian and WW2 themed.
Tokyo gore police -
Wall-E - thought it was boring in some parts but is overall a nice fuzzy movie.
Can't really think of any other memorable movies. Though I haven't seen any of the new batman movies or many movies at all from this year, but from the movies I have seen, this didn't seem like a good year.

I quite like Twilight which was a major shock to me, given how much I despise these modern horror movies. It's no Lost Boys, but it's quite an intriguing film.

To be honest, I can't think of 1 outstanding movie from 2008 that was all that special. Twilight as mentioned was good, Tropic Thunder was watchable, Death Race and Transporter 3 were ok. I haven't seen the new Batman yet, but I'm thinking it must be better than most of the 08 bunch.

Dunno if it stretches onto 2008, but the best film I saw last year was Into The Wild, might be a little slow for most people but I really liked it.

I'm surprised that I liked this movie so much but;
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - A great movie that really makes you think. And the ending is quite emotional.

Basically out of the ones I've seen, I'll be watching Hancock tonight, so it'll change. I watched Madagascar 2 on Sunday, it was a good movie, but isn't in my list.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned that! I saw it about a week ago and it was amazing! It's very thought-provoking and it makes you think about a lot of very emotional subjects you wouldn't normally think about.

So my favorite would also be "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button", with "The Dark Knight" at a very close 2nd.

I normally wait until the DVD release before I watch a film. These are my personal favourites of 2008, I'm surprised the first 3 haven't already been mentioned.

No Country for Old Men

I'm only half way through Man on Wire but so far it hasn't disappointed.

In this respect I believe Body of Lies deserves a mention as well. I really thought it was a great film, and it explores some modern day issues(terrorism, cultural clashes etc.). The only thing that annoyed me about the movie was the main character's love interest who were introduced a bit late in the movie. That just wasn't necessary..

I have watched a lot of other movies, but I just can't think of any other good ones at the moment...

WALL-E

Nothing else especially caught my attention. I liked WALL-E, because it kind of reminded me of Animal Farm - a fantasy story seemingly for children, with a chilling political agenda behind it. Visually impressive also.

WALL-E was good for sure.
The Dark Knight
Changling
Grand Torino (kind of 2009 i know)
I haven't seen it yet but i think Mongol is going to be one of my favourites too.

I thought the curious case of benjamin button was sub-par. It was definitely thought provoking and gave you a sense of mortality (which is what i liked about it). But it also failed to produce any meaning besides "life happens and it's what you make of it" (which i think is 90% bull). That and it took too long to make it's point of no point at all...

Sorry for those that liked it, i did think it was well done and made you think in a good way.

Mongol, oh yes, that was a really good film actually.

10,000 BC was another good film (not sure if it was released 2008, may have been 2007) Given my interest in Ancient history and having seen the trailer I just thought: this will be just over the top nonsense. It was a good film and I'm not pedantic enough to look everything up. Though it looked like a mix and match of things - you had Persian-like people building pyramids, I should look it up, but that would make my last statement untrue.

And several sci-fi references, it has some of my sci-fi friends happy, particularly having a clone of 'Hal'. Wall-E was good with its political agenda, you see in some kids stuff already, even cartoons you deem innocent like Recess.

Though Captain Planet was not at all subtle about its political agenda. Protect the environment or I'll *$%*ing kill you. (As Robot Chicken put it)

Iron Man?!? sorry but it really disappointed me. i mean, you only really see him in his suit like 3 times in the movie for like 5 min each. the rest was tony stark acting cocky with the message 'im rich i could do whatever i want'. plus, too much commercialism really dampered down the movie. im not saying it was terrible but it seems overhyped. compared to the dark knight (as a super hero movie) there just wasn't as much substance. Iron man was just pretty average. i just dont think it served the comic book justice.

Pineapple Express
Yes man
dark knight
saw 5 (because i am obsessed with the saw series)

to be honest, 2008 wasn't really the year for movies. yeah so there were some but nothing to wet your pants about.

Personally I say movies have sucked for a long time now.

They are doing the same thing over and over. Its all the same crap with just a few little changes.

The movie industry really is lacking imagination.

There are no movies in 2008 that I'd want to see, or even be paid to watch.

wow, that was harsh.

well there are some original movies just not a whole lot. but the remakes you have to give them credit for finding a way to re-create an interesting experience.

yeah i like deep plots, twists, and constant-thinkers but there is never a time where i would not want to watch a movie. its relaxing and as long as it isnt cheesy or really stupid then i will put up with it.

did anyone see the incredible hulk? (the newest one) i mean, it seems everyone likes the super hero movies. iron man was about as good as daredevil. nothing really special.

I liked Sweeney Todd.

As well as Ironman - okay Ironman wasn't the best movie out there, but it was enjoyable.

As for the Dark Knight, I think it was a good twist on Batman, of course not trying to be too close to the comic, but what seemed to be, a different take on things. As a movie it was really good and very well done (ace job by Heath Ledger, he pulled the part really well), as a representation of the comic, not a clue, I don't read comics. Mind you, there was psychotic element to it, me, well neurotic, psychotic, whatever, I enjoy anything where the characters aren't quite straight in the head. Which probably explains 75% of my writing.

If you say that you would not get paid to watch any films from this year then you obviously aren't looking hard enough.
Dark Knight was good and probably my favourite Batman film, Heath Ledger was indeed good considering the roles he has played before but i wouldn't say that he was the best acting i've ever seen. I would comment on my favourite but its hard to choose right now.
Seriously, you should check out some of the Indie Film scene stuff, hell, even just go onto sky and watch the indie channel. Some of my favourite films of all time have been small company/budget films.

I hate the super hero crap. They seem to pump out super hero movies during times of economic hardship (like they did in the very late 80's, early 90's).

I guess people like watching movies about good guys beating evil guys during such times, and it makes them forget about whats going on.

Yeah I was only talking about major releases.

I was hugely disappointed with movies this year. The worst was X-Files, man I was so pumped for it, and what a piece of crap it turned out to be.

Even the comedies sucked. I thought Pineapple Express would be better, but it just was lame. One or two funny scenes, the rest sucked.

It's no surprise that you posted this, Gil.

In any case, in order:

1. The Dark Knight
Yes, a superhero movie with a guy with a batfetish.

2. Tropic Thunder
Plus an Oscar for Tom Cruise. Dude was bloody briliant for his 20 second screentime.

3. Vantage Point
Okay, far-fetched, yes, a twenty minute ride by ambulance is easy to catch up to on foot while shooting people and yes, someone who just murdered a few hundred people kills himself to avoid a little girl. So what?

4. Quantum of Solace
The new style of James Bond is just so much more fun to watch.

5. Iron Man
Highly entertaining, fun and a horribly weak ending.

omega gamer-

i was going to say sweeney todd but... i looked it up and apparently it came out last year.

And a really good, overlooked movie is "Ghost town". There were alot of commercials for it, and alot of people said they wanted to go see it, but no one did. It's a comedy about a guy who goes in for a colon exam, comes out, and now he can see ghosts.

YES!

i think your the first person i know of that thinks the same as i do about that movie. Most of my friends think it's awesome, and will watch it in HD and just drool. I thought it was okay to watch once or twice, but not great or amazing. Very little suit action, too much prologue, and lame final battle... IMHO

It did have it's moments though, like when he was breaking out of the cave. That was great, but then he never did much else at all until the end.

Hmm. I guess I'm the only one here who saw The Fall.

Dark Knight and The Fall are the only two movies from 2008 making it into my collection. I'm extremely strict with what goes into it. If I hadn't seen The Fall recently, it'd only be one new movie.

The new 007 movie is NOT on the list. I saw that yesterday... boring. lame. overrated.

Dark Night was amazing.
Kung Fu Panda was okay
Wall-E was pretty awesome.
Get Smart was funny.

Honestly, those are the only new movies I've seen...

Gag.

I agree with whoever posted that there weren't any good movies in 2008. Honestly I went to the theatre so many times just to get disappointed every single time. The Day the Earth Stood Still was the last straw--- what complete and utter crap!

I enjoyed No Country for Old Men but wasn't that 2007?

Am i the only one who thought "Batman Begins" was better than "The Dark Knight"? Don't get me wrong the Joker was awesome, But i thought the story and suspense in the first one was alot better.

Anyway as for this year:
Dark Knight
Cloverfield - I find alot of the people who said it was rubbish (Mainly chavs), Also mention that they did not understand it. Has anyone else found this?
KungFu Panda - This was good, I love the halarious facial expressions in animated films hehe

And who listens to chavs these days?

I liked Cloverfield (wasn't that 2007? Or am I mistaken?) it worked the suspense quite well and was a good take on the whole 'video camera' thing, however I can see that 'angle' getting overused sooner or later.

Of course, the best 'video camera' take has got to be that episode of South Park. "I so startled right now". Loved the Guinea Pigs and the Guinea pig costumes.

I really loved kung fu panda - I guess it's because I'm a tae kwon do guy and the whole movie is a giant pun on martial arts. XD

And I liked vantage point.

I thought Iron Man was pretty entertaining... better than the Spiderman films at least.

don't kill me for saying this but the dark knight was a good movie but it wasn't a great movie. It had some great acting and a great story. However it was just to damn long. i got kind of mad towards the end. their where far to many cliff hangers in the story for me. That was heath ledgers best work, and towards the end it got to the point where i just wanted them to finally catch the joker, but it went on and on. it would have been a much better movie had it been shorter.
