:: Please note: This thread is not to be an argument as to whether or not DarkBASIC classic or Pro is better than the other. Thank you. ::

As most of you are aware there is currently an event taking place on TGC called NaGaCreMo '09, in which users make a resolution to complete a game within the first 30 days of January, 2009.

To get to my point of this thread...

How many of you (however many years ago or even just last week) bought DarkBASIC Classic and wish you had gone Pro? I certainly wish I had Pro to develop my game for NaGaCreMo.
Don't get me wrong, Classic is pretty good for beginners, but Pro is definitely the way to go anymore. It's constantly getting plug-ins and .dlls developed for it, and it has much better collision commands and supports many level editors/makers (like 3D World Studio, which I want very, very badly but can't use with Classic). Pro also has better lighting systems and a particle effects engine, where as Classic just has pretty standard vertex-lighting effects. Yesiree, I wish I had gone Pro.

How many of you guys regret not going Pro when you first got into programming/game development?

Well, I got DBC to start with, in like 2004, because at the time it was nice and cheap (I got it in PC world for a low pirce). And while I didn't regret the buy in hindsight, I did decide a year and a bit later that DBP would have to be what to get, because of the Windows IDE, plugins, what you said. For me there wasn't too much regret in it, DBC had a lot of good help resources with it, and for me was just another step up the game design ladder, before going to the slightly more capable DBP. (even if they are pretty much the same in difficulty, I felt DBC had better newcomer resources)

I now use Leadwerks, which in comparison now outdwarfs DB in areas; however I don't regret buying DBP.

I should have worded that better. I don't necessarily regret not buying DBPro off the bat, but now I wish I had. But I suppose it's a good thing I didn't, because as you said Tom J, DBC does have better resources for beginners.

And it's interesting, I've actually gotten some really good results from using the built-in collision commands in DBC, not by using Sparky's. But anyway, I think I will go Pro for NaGaCreMo '10.

I'd find it difficult to go back to DBC, DBPro has got too much to it now. But the main thing is that the core game programming skills are learned, the more you do in DBC, the more you'll be able to do in DBPro.

I started with DBC, I don't think I remember knowing Pro existed when I bought it, may be it didn't - what was the release date of pro?

I got some good stuff in DBC (nothing ever completed: this was before joining the forum), but collision was my main problem, however I found it was when moving to Pro as well, but later I've learned the plugins that help. The switch from DBC to DBP was good, it left me with a lot more options.

But DBP doesn't have the demo nor the help-package DBC had, which I found quite useful. Conversely, with DBP, we have a lot of help with the forums and code snippets laying around anyway.

I was lucky with DBP, Amazon was having a sale and gave it away for £15, plus it was still when DBP came in cardboard packaging.

I love the app: in ALL of my attempts to try something different, something more powerful and faster than it, I find myself coming back.

My advice is that if you have the money to spare, get Dark Game Studio - so you get pretty much everything you need.

But needless to say, there are even some great DBC collision tutorials around, it might be worth looking them up. I believe there were some on the main TGC site.

I wonder how long it will take tha_rami to come in and start preaching about how much better DBC is

I bought DBP back in 2003 and I'm still very happy with it.

Not entirely sure what the difference is anymore. Don't think DBC had vertexdata or blendmapping, both of which are hella cool. Also, when i decide to take the plunge, shaders and dlls too. Glad i upgraded also because i'm the "norm" now, and so it's easier to communicate with the community here.

Hehe, DBC isn't actually better - like many say, it's the programmer and not the language (to an extent, of course).

I personally prefer it in most cases, except for one thing: the UDTs. My entry is in DarkBASIC Pro this time.

But still, seeing a lot of the good stuff here is being made in DBC, I name a Dream, Soulhunter and even the fully commercial Evochron Legends... well, I rest my case.

But, the Dark Game Studio package, jeez, thats one HOT deal.

I switched because of the IDE, plugins, collision, and bone animation... And everyone else was doing it.

Dark Game Studio looks...

FANTASTIC!!

The more I think about it, I really do like DarkBASIC Classic. If I hadn't found it about two years ago, I wouldn't be into programming at all.

btw TGC, in my game can I put a TM mark right next to the part of my intro screen that says "Made with DarkBASIC™ Classic" without getting in trouble? Or do I have to add "Made with DarkBASIC™ Classic by THE GAME CREATORS"?

Just askin'...

I started with Classic then went to Pro. I don't regret it.

What were the alternatives? I could have given up because I didn't want to spend an extra few quid at the time. I could have gone with Blitz which was on my radar.

No, I have no regrets.

I think DBC must have brought a lot of people back to making games. I was using VB and I even tried Blitz2D but couldn't get into it, then I found DBC and fell in love .

I like DBC a lot more... I don`t know why, but I do.

Another thing I noticed, is that anyone can make anything look really great in DBP, where you need a lot of effort to do the same in DBC, which gives it quite a challenge. I must like that challenge...

Just to get an idea of what I am talking about, I made this quick image:

In the light blue section the spheres where made with DBP, and in the dark blue section with DBC. You can see what a difference there is, and I don`t like the idea of making a game where everything looks great right at the start.

When I first found out that a person could make their own games (about 2 years ago) I immediately google 'game creation software'. The first two things that Google showed was DarkBASIC and BLitz3D. I first looked at DarkBASIC, saw what the code looked like and decided I could learn it, but to be sure I went and looked at Blitz. Blitz was really intimidating, so I opted for DBC and started learning as much as possible before requesting it for my 16th birthday. That was a happy, happy day when I finally got it...

I guess I've just gotten into the idea of programming so much that I want DBPro now.
