I don't know how many of you read Slashdot, but it turns out that MS is releasing a public beta of Windows 7 today (Friday)

Here's a link: http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/09/01/08/2011249.shtml

I've had it installed in a VM for a few days. I've installed Firefox, Chrome, Defraggler, and a few small programs, and it's wonderful. Very fast for a VM with 512MB RAM under Vista with 1GB.

Ah, great news, might install this on a VM just to try it out. I'm sure I'm not alone in loving open betas.

Apparently they've taken it down and are in the process of adding more servers:
Quote: "Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal—we're in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We're sorry for the delay and we'll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience."

Microsoft should consider setting up a torrent for it--- would make it much faster to download and would handle everyone receiving it at once.

I was going to say, like most Microsoft software it's probably available on other sites if you do a bit of googling but I wouldn't want to mess around with that unless it was some form of official microsoft torrent.

^ Sums up my opinion of it, regardless of how good it is. It's the OS we should have had when Vista shipped

Shame the download is still broken

EDIT: Unless you use the TechNet link, the 'official' page doesn't work under anything but IE. Here's the full ISO link:

I'll be downloading this...though to be fair I'm about to send my laptop off, but when I get it back, it'll be a perfect way of testing their new OS before it's fully released...I'll download it tomorrow and stick on my external for safe keeping.

But will this work with Virtual PC? I imagine it would, but I've never properly tested how good the software is.

Has anybody noticed you need a 128mb DirectX 9 card for Aero? Seems like a strange requirement, but I suppose it means more juice elsewhere to handle UI effects.

Yeah, I just installed on virtual pc, it works. But it was hard to get 512 ram available, as I only have 1gb in my pc. BTW after install, I managed to get it to boot with only 126 mb ram!! Nothing less worked though.

Yey, I downloaded, I've got it installed on my desktop now. 1.5gb ram, Athlon 2600+, and a Radeon 9800 Pro. Runs GREAT. It doesn't feel laggy at all.
Other people seem to be having great success as far as speed goes.

Awesome! Well I'm going to test it on virtual PC today if I get the chance. I will have to free some space on my HD though, just need 40 GB free.

I see the system requirement ask for 1gb of RAM, I think I'll put aside 1.5, maybe 2gigs and try to play some games on it through Virtual PC. I'll probably try Mass Effect - though my disk is at my Uni address. It'll be interesting to see if Windows 7 makes a difference on ME's memory leaks)

? I didn't think virtual pc's supported graphics hardware, I thought it had to emulate on the cpu.

Anybody tried downloading this with Firefox or Flock? How long did it take for the downloads window to finish scanning for Viruses, I've been waiting for ages and it won't complete itself until it has.

[Edit] Nevermind, it didn't run for another reason.

[double edit]

Did anybody else get this error in Virtual PC 2007?

"Windows could not collect information for [OSImage] since the specified image file [install.wim] does not exist."

This happens when hitting the 'install' button.

Hmm installed in Virtual PC 2007 fine for me, I selected Windows Vista as the operating system when creating the new VM.

Shame Aero doesn't work when running as a VM though.

I like the new ... is it snippit? But it lets you choose a portion of the screen and take a screen shot of it.

By the way, don't use Virtual PC... use Virtual Box. Virtual Box is awesome and free.

Joel, I'll try that, if it doesn't work, then I'll re-download Windows 7.

I don't understand why it won't work, I followed the instructions on the MSDN blog, I even have the exact same build of Virtual PC as the guy.

[Edit]

It failed for Virtual Box, something in the ISO must be corrupt, given the nature of the error...though do you think my AV (Kaspersky) or UAC could be getting in the way?

I think my favorite part is the high-resolution background images it comes with.

Pretty, pretty pictures.

I'm still getting used to the scrunchy bar, but I like it. Also, being able to customize UAC is a big plus for me. I may actually buy this one...

Looks great. I've got it installed as a Virtual Machine now, my last download of Windows& must have been faulty.

And I am typing this in Firefox 3 running in Windows 7.

It runs quite smooth, even in a virtual machine, thought some of the graphical features are a little slow sometimes, but I realise that I've only got 16mb of VRAM dedicated to it, so that's probably why.

Oh and they've changed paint, it looks quite weird, much like the new MS Office.

I personally think this looks better than Vista - graphically speaking, as for features, I'm still exploring.

I'd test DBP, but it's at my other house.

I've got it running on me Eee PC 1000H. It runs just as fast as XP.

The Ethernet driver I used the original one from the EeePC dvd and managed to download the vista wireless driver for it and it works great.

Installed office 2007 on it too an that works great too.

Basically its taken from the 2008 server core with a few tweaks added to it, hence it runs faster than Vista (2008 server with desktop addon ran faster than vista )

I got DBPro to work after installing the latest directx redistributable and placing msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll in the Windows/System32 directory.

I've found the taskbar much nicer to use when it's combines only when full (as per screenshot).

I wish I could test it out. :/ It looks good, and a friend of mine who absolutely hates Windows said he was going to save up $400 to buy it when it's out. (That was how much Vista cost on it's release date for Ultimate if I recall correctly).

Cheers,

If you got about 10 gigs of space and at least 512mb of ram not in use, you can try it out. Download the beta, and the 30 day trial of vmware:

The snip tool was in Vista. I think the fact you only just discovered it in Win7 highlights the failings of Vista's bundled applications / UI

I installed Windows 7 on my old laptop. It works very well, except for a examples of acting wiered. But other then that, it can become one of the best, maybe the best, version of Windows up to date.

The UI could be more straight forward, though. Find it a bit unclear. And I still miss the option to turn of taping on that pad on which I move my finger to move the mouse will click where I have my mouse. If it is there, it is hidden somewhere where I could not find it.

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.

For a laptop, disabling tapping is usually under Configuration Screen -> Mouse -> Synaptic/Elantech/whatever made your touchpad. If you do not see this option, you'll need to install the touchpad drivers.

They're kind of bringing back virtualization of programs on the desktop with med-v.

Hmm, me thinks that application virtualisation, whilst aimed at businesses, has a far bigger purpose. I'm placing bets that the next Windows version is going to make big changes, because MED-V sounds like a potential Classic Environment/Rosetta-style system for a future OS
