Hey all, unless I'm really missing something in DarkBASIC, I'm under the impression that one cannot use their own icon in DB upon compiling the code into an .exe. If this is true (and I'm pretty certain it is) then that means I cannot use my own icon unless I use software that can change the icon later. Software such as:

http://www.softpedia.com/downloadTag/ico+changer

Now I must admit, I know nothing about changing icons on individual .exe's. I know it's possible, but what does it involve? Can I just use a .bmp image as an icon? Or is it its own special format (I think I've seen .ico, but that could be something else...?)?

I appreciate any answers you guys can give me!

Oh yeah, umm....is this even legal?

Classic or Pro? You do it in Pro by adding the icon to the relevant part of the project tree.

In DB Classic. As far as I can tell, you can't have your own icon.

I think you're right Yodaman, I think you need to use a program that changes the icon.

What I'd do if I were you is make your icon, save it as a PNG, then search google for "PNG to ICO", then use a program that changes the icon of an EXE to that ICO

Or if you set up and installer for your program, you can put the .exe in a program files folder hidden somewhere, and then create a shortcut on the desktop using your icon - I seem to remember a free installer I used a while back which did that automatically for me with my DB programs.
Think this was the one:

Install creator from clickteam is pretty good! I'd recommend even if you don't use it to change the icon.
I have to admit surprise, when I read the title I was sure your thread would be full of geek chat, full of text about hex editors, written with the masturbatory glee of someone who knows that their explanation is way beyond the grasp of a simple human.

Anyway, please post about your results using that icon changer, as I am going to need to do this soon, and would love to know how it goes.

Well, I believe that you simply have to design your 64x64 ICON in GIMP (2.6.3) and you can save it with the extension of .ico, without having to convert anything. Cool, eh?

As for IconChanger, well, that turned out it costs money. . So I asked a friend and he said to try the XN Resource Editor. I'm about to now, and I'll be sure to tell you all how it goes!

Well, XN seems to have MANY issues, at least on my machine. I encountered many buggy messages. And it broke the test EXE I made.

Soo...I guess my next step is to try that installing software...

You could always try ResHack > http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/. Make a backup of your EXE and poke around a little, it's quite simple to change the icon as far as I remember.
The resolution of the icon must be 32x32, and use only 16 colours or your game won't start(a message displaying the dbc logo will appear instead ).

Well I must say that Install Creator is just fantastic! I can see it working perfectly in the future for my game.
