Basicly, Because ive been claiming JSA for 6 months now, I have to go to this weird "New Deal" thing. Has anyone else had to do this? What does it involve?

All i know is i have to go to the local "New Deal" place every day, for two weeks. Idk how long each day, or what i will be doing there.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Cheers.

It's probably just some idiots telling you how best to find a job. I say idiot because the whole thing is moronic - I mean if these people were good at finding jobs, to the point where they could advise others, then they would most likely have found better jobs for themselves already .

They might go through interview techniques, CV writing, and probably the 'little train that could' story about the weirdo who went around all these companies every day asking for a job, until he eventually got one. I was unemployed for 6 months years ago, and had to go on one of these courses - it helped me find a job in that I took the first thing offered to me to avoid going to more of these back to work things.

This youtube video will show you what to expect, beware of the moderate swearing.

Lol. Funny

I quite liked the training sessions offered at my local job center. I was unemployed for a time and they offered a lot of great advice. You should go in with the attitude that you can find a job with the advice they provide you.

If you need training, you should consider getting a school loan. If you need a job, that's what your job center is there for. They'll even put you in nice clothes if you can't afford any.

I found that the only people complaining were the people who'd rather have the benefits than learn how to get a job or those that didn't want to take the time to go to school.

So go there with the knowledge that you'll learn something valuable. If you find it's a waste of time, then you should already be able to land a job, and you should go out and get interviews.

That all said, I know one job center isn't like the next, mine may very well have been good compared to others. Anyway, good luck!

I see thanks people.

The reason im complaining, Is because the whole idea is moronic. I could understand if i was sending off 1000000's cvs a day and not getting a reply, or wasent looking whatsoever. But that's not the case. I look on-line, shop windows, and newspapers, EVERY DAY, And in the 6 months ive been on the dole, I've found 5 suitable jobs. I sent relevent info (cv/app form etc) to each of the job recepitants. I got two interviews out of the 5. One of the interviews ended up being one of those group things, where it was like me and 50 other people filling out the forms all at the same time, for the same job. There were only 2 places available for that one, So of course i did not get it. The other interview was cancelled, because they found someone.

Basicly, Why the hell are they giving people these courses, When due to the recession, There are actually no jobs for people of my age? In a way its an insult, Like im not a retard, i do know how to send a damn cv off!

Another thing im not looking forward to, Well most people who live in the UK, know that Essex is a chav filled swamp. So it will be like going to school for two weeks, With a ton of chavs! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Like, they are so immature, Its like "ehehe, ey brud, luk dere is a crum on de floor!, eh'eh'eh". Im just hoping there will be some people i can get along with. I.e, people not part of the clan of chavs.

I agree, Except here (in essex, uk), There are no jobs other than 50k administrators, Which obviously an 18yr old like myself cannot get.

Sorry about the rant, I just have an allergy to these government organizations, like job centre plus. They all think they are so much better than anyone who walks into the job centre, Just because they have a job. Its quite insulting.

That is annoying. That generally means they had someone for the job, but to keep it legal they have to advertise it etc...

Do you have any initiatives around setting up business for yourself in your area? Most local authorities have something, and it's far more exciting than filling in application forms for jobs that don't exist.

Indeed, I think this course covers it. But what exactly would i do? Im getting a car soon, And my dad keeps surgesting that maybe i should just do a simple "Computer Repair/Build" service. Is this a good idea? If not what else could i do?

I would like to be self employed, But it needs to pay the bills.

Computer repair would certainly earn you some money once you have some regular customers (are there any local small businesses that might need someone to look after their computers?). The company where my dad works pay someone up to £30 an hour to fix their computer problems.

@General Reed

have you tried any agencies as they can sometimes get you into places that a job interview would never get you into, and once you've done one with them it gets a bit easier, plus they seem to get all the jobs first before the center does.

Another plus I belive you can use the centers phone to ring them all up.

good lucky on your search.

I would be difficult for a person on their own to get 'in the door' as an IT support company, for one thing there are a lot of companies with IT-degree-having Europeans who would charge around the same as you would want to. Usually the #1 priority is what level of service can be offered, but 1 person on their own would have a really tough job of convincing them that they are the right person.

I think that as more and more people work from home, rely on their PC - that having a home visit system is more feasible. I mean, imagine some guy who is working from home and needs to send a report or whatever to his boss, then the PC packs in. If you could provide a service where you visit, get the PC working again, then it's easy to justify charging £20-£30 an hour.
I often think that IT support is a lot like being a mechanic - people don't trust you unless they have to. Once your PC or car has been fixed, the next thing that goes wrong is automatically the fault of whoever fixed it last . If they have no option but to call that number for emergency support, then providing a good service would go a long way IMO.

I actually work at a training provider doing recruitment for a New Deal provision.

Thanks for calling me an idiot!

I have yet to see a learner who doesn't gain from being with us. Just today I was invigilating Key Skills tests; basically giving people a second chance at GCSE level qualifications.

It's a bit more than just CV writing and interview workshops.

Oh and what Jerico2day said is awesomely true.

Hehe no offense Kohaku, I can only go by my own experiences, I'm sure there are good facilities and advice out there, maybe you could send some to Fife .

Heh; none taken.

I shall do everything in my power to ensure that Fife has my support. Unfortunately, I lack power in Fife.

But anyway; General Reed, go for the training with the view to gain and I'm sure you'll get something out of it; even if it's a crap provider.

YOU CAN DO IT!

Search for a gap in the market and fill it We're all to some extent creative people here so just use your mind to question what problems people need solving, maybe even as a result of the current economic situation; which makes starting up a business look so bleak. Sure it won't pay the bills to start with (but thats just how business works ), but if you find a required good, then breaking even will come. Like maybe there is something less available than computer repair, we already have somebody to help with repairing nearby, plus when my computer broke; I had the warranty.

And that's enough badmouthing all of Essex for now
