Agreed. I think people are going to be taken aback when win7 is released at normal cost

And it'll be worth every cent! The reviews I've read about Windows 7 have been almost nothing but positive. I must admit I am very excited and looking forward to being able to buy it one day.

You will have to buy it, even if you got Vista. At last what I have read. However, if you are a good enough beta tester they might give it to you as thanks. Maybe.

did they give Vista free to XP owners? no. Did they give XP free to Wins 98 users? No. So what makes you think they're gonna give Win 7 free to Vista owners?

I too read that Vista users were going to receive 7 for free, but the site looked like one of those rumor mills. I'm willing to bet that MicroSoft won't give 7 away to Vista users.

************************************************************

I can't remember what the site was or where it was, but it definitely didn't look trustworthy, and that was a couple of weeks ago that I came across whilst Googling.

If they make users pay for what is effectively "Vista done right", then they're a bit stupid in terms of relating to their user base.

Heck, even Apple, potentially the most money-hungry corp. out there, released OS X v10.1 for free of charge, to fix up the screwiness of v10.0

Interestingly enough, I like vista perfectly fine. I would say Win7 is an upgrade, not a fix.

That's why I think MS will charge normal price upon release.

Agreed 100 percent. You can't expect a company that just laid off 5000 workers to release the next version of Windows for free.

That makes perfect sense, IMHO. While I did at first hate Vista, I discovered that I only hated it because of the way it was setup on my grandma's laptop. It just wasn't set up the it should have been. After spending time on it, and fixing it however, I discovered that it could be really good.

But I'm definitely going to wait until 7 comes out.

Wait....what?

Main reason I do not like Vista more then XP is that I do not like the UI that much (well, not entierly true, do not like how resouce demanding it is or how overprotective it feels, but I do not dislike it). Unfortunetly I have seen that Windows 7 have become even worse in at last one place. But it is faster and less resouce intensive then Vista (tested it in a VM with 200 mb ram, and it was usable, even though it was very slow on occations, especially when there where many windows). So I really think Windows 7 can be the best Windows up to date... if they only skip that UI, lol.

Then you just disable the UI? Just put it on Windows Classic. Unlike in Office, you actually have a choice, there.

I've been using 7 for a few weeks now, and it really is amazing.

I think the guys that threw in the rumor Windows 7 will be free are anti-Microsoft. Personally, I'd daresay they're trying to crash 7's good name prior to release. If people are believing it, they're doing a good job. It's absurd to ask of Microsoft to release Windows 7 for free for people that have Vista, while Vista is a perfectly good, usable and stable OS.

Ohhhh, it is not Aero I mean at all. The new version of Aero is very good, much faster and all. Maybe a bit to transparent (becomes disorienting for me to look at in the long run), but otherwise it is very good.

Was more or less thinking about how the Ui is designed... like how you change theme and so. The GUI for that, I do not like it at all, because it is disorienting and a bit diffus (well, I find it to be). Also do not like the Control Panel.

Besides, Classic looks extremely horrible under Windows 7 for some reason. Before I could like it, not I cannot stand it.

Control Panel, too, has a classic mode. The UI got a revamp in 7. Takes some getting used to, but admittedly very logical. I think it'll be a breeze for 'new users'.

I would love to try out the Windows 7 beta, but I just don't have the time anymore. I will definitely purchase it however when it comes out

Regarding the Control Panel, I included both the "new" and the "classic" layout in my statement, but then again, I am not really a fan of the Control Panel in Windows in general.

Guess we have different tastes, for I see the new layout as not very functional... at last not for me.

You can turn off the transparency if you want to.

I have a feeling Windows 7 will be awesome and very popular. What Microsoft needs to do right now is to restore their name and come out with a stable, popular OS much like XP was and is, even though IMO Vista rocks.

So... with ID theft, and a company that's known for "initial version has severe holes for a year and a half"... and a new version every few years... Is this really a good idea...

How can I trace someone who's just taken my ID if all the files they used are on a system nobody else's can read.

How do I write darkbasic Pro programs for the "common user" when they're still fixing issues with Vista?

Why does everybody want the latest windows when the last decade's linux had the same features and even runs windows code...

I haven't used Windows 7, but admittedly it does sound pretty awesome. I'm just trying to look at the bigger image. I'd like an OS that can talk to my printer when it comes out, not when SP 1 is released a year later.

Though the beta's seem to be working for you guys, so perhaps only 99 percent of the issues I mentioned have validity, not 100. (not completely serious with that last one... but I don't doubt those issues will reappear even if they're alright now)

Blame your printers manufacterer for not writing new drivers. Windows has to move on beyond 'legacy' stuff to keep up with concurrents.

That's fairly poor reasoning, especially since the 16 bit subsystem is still in Vista. How can you justify dropping legacy stuff but not getting rid of that? (Or the millions of other completely obsolete technologies that still appear in Vista and Win7)

Odd, I agree with both of you on that one. I suppose if they pull a "Backwards compatibility!" and it's not compatible (like vista), my original point stands. If they say "not compatible, time to move this way", then the_rami's on track.
