I have started learning the fine discipline of isometric pixel art. I will show my drawings here in the order that they were drawn. I am learning this stuff because I want to use it to draw my own graphics for a game at some point. All of these images were drawn in paint.

Constructive criticism is highly welcomed.

Also you can view the full resolution images at my personal gallery, where new pictures will be uploaded as I draw them. The gallery is located at http://photos.logicstudios.net/index.php

Thanks for looking!

I dont like 2 and 4, because of the blatent copy+paste

number one is good, if a little simple, 3 i dont like the colours

5 and 6 are bloody marvelous (though i think more could be done to that swimming pool in 6 )

Very nice

If you're looking for isometric resources or tutorials though check out my thread over here: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=144030&b=4

not bad on 6 you could slide the pool to the left and let the wall next to it give some depth, just like you did in 5 (also creating a path all the way around the pool). also, on 6: the 2 open doors and the orange walls inside. i'd guess those 'hallways' are illuminated? otherwise, for consistency's sake, i'd darken the orange wall on the right (like the darker yellow wall upstairs). speaking of which (upstairs), the back-side of the open door up there could be darker to contrast with the neighboring closed door.

and, finally, you shoulda put this in the 2d section that forum is under-used and could benefit from your work

Does anybody have any idea why I can't see the images? (And to forestall bad jokes: no, I'm not blind, my monitor is not turned off etc.). And when I click that link it takes me to some weird advertising site or something(pic attached). That's kind of strange.

You're watching at the reply box instead of the images at the top of the page.

No clue, honestly, I can see them .

Its a new webspace and all of the kinks are not worked out yet. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I attribute this failure to Benjamin.

The link and images work fine for me.

I blame Benjamin for that too.

Edit Nearly forgot main reason for posting.

Nice images.

I have just created a new building. It is very basic due to me not planning this properly beforehand, but I recorded my drawing it and sped up the framerate and added a bit of music.

Take a look

They're all very neatly drawn, but personally I think the best pixel art is when there's more detail, more personality if you know what I mean. It depends on what look you are going for, but some pixel art is damn fascinating to look at. For instance, some artists would put ornaments in those windows, curtains, air conditioners, a babe topless sunbathing on the roof, some pigeons arguing over the economy, and someone hanging out their window smoking a roll-up.

I always thought the silly details are the fun part of these drawings, I think it would be cool if you took that last drawing (or any one really), and added a lot of useless but amusing detail . Not saying that's how you should draw, but I think it makes for good practice to mess around like that.

@Ravey - Thanks for the vote of confidence

@Van B - This is great advice, I like looking at a good pixel art and finding all the little bits of detail and the little jokes that are in there. I think I have been shooting myself in the foot with my previous works because when I get round to places where these details might go, I have not left myself with enough pixels to draw them in, so I am going to increase the scale I use.

P.S. Can anybody do iso-people because I completely cannot.

I feel inclined to make and post my own pixel art now.

Looking cool Mnem.

I particularly like the ones with the red 'X' in the white box at the top left. The white boxes look just like a page. GJ!

I doubt you can't do that. Perhaps you're not using the right tool for the job. Instead of paint, try icoFix, it has a few advantages.

a. the use of a transparent brush.

b. you can zoom in and still get a 1:1 scaled preview. So no time loss zooming in and out.

If you want to save a picture. go to export instead of save. choose *.png, this way you save your alpha channel.

One of the trics in pixelArt is the use of anti-aliasing techniques. You can smoothen a edge by drawing a mixed pixel next to the border. This could be done with an alpha bruch.

Don't use it anti aliasing everywhere. Buidings edges for instance have to stick out. Use it for smaler objects, like people.

Don't worry if the enlarged version looks crappy, the human eye is traind in converting shapes into recognisable "icons".

I like the shape of your buildings. Unless it a choice of style I think the texture & feel of the walls could be inproved. Try drawing some pixels in a slightly different colour. This will unflatten your art.

Overall opintion of your art: if you do this in paint you are doing a great job.

Just tried icofx, I don't like the way that it doesn't show you the line you are drawing as you draw it or the way the max image size is 256x256 pixels. I do however LOVE the transparent brush thing though. I think this will be great when it comes to drawing windows and things like that.

Froog : How did you turn the anti-aliasing off, and did my isometric grid graphics help you a great deal?

theres an option, "enable smooth objects" or something like that, which is hard to find, and then when i did find it, it still wasnt obvious it had anything to do with anti-aliasing, at first i thought it just meant like.. rounded corners :S

Very nice Mnemonix. Certainly a lot better than I could do

But I have to agree with VanB, more detail the better!
