I booted my laptop earlier today, and it got as far as the loading screen and then it restarted. And it keeps restarting.

I've tried "chkdsk \r", "chkdsk \p", and bootfix, and none work. When I do bootfix it just says: boot sector cannot be fixed. Safe mode does not work. And when I check how much space I have available in Windows Setup, it says that about one MB. is being used...

I'm running out of ideas here. It sounds to me like I have a faulty hard drive.

Sounds like the partition table is corrupt. I would just reinstall windows if i were you.

Ya, it might be a lost cause. You could try to rebuild the partition table.

Also, if you get this fixed, or if you reformat, make sure you run a chkdsk again to see if your hdd is going out or what.

HDTUNE for Windows is pretty nice if you do get it fixed. When my HD crashed it just made several loud noises, the computer slowed so unbearably bad, and I couldn't start it up again without hearing funky noises - couldn't boot from the HD. Had to boot into Windows XP, and if the hard drive was connected whenever I booted, Windows XP would BSOD. (Windows XP is on a different drive from the one that crashed).

I lost all my files and it sucked. Good thing I had a FEW backups of random, but useful things. (And Windows XP of course).

Cheers,

Well you could boot up into a live version of linux, Back up your files, then reinstall.

If you get the BSoD, what my dad did was reinstall Windows. That's it, notice what was gone, then restart all over again.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Unfortunately, I have tried almost EVERYTHING, and it appears my hard drive is toast...formatting, changing partitions, running a HD self test, and installing windows will not work.

It's strange. I format both partitions in the Repair Console (because it won't let me delete partitions when I choose to install Windows!), I restart, and guess what? It still shows the Windows XP boot screen, and I still have the error.

I think I need to purchase a new hard drive.

Yeah, that happens a lot. Actually i bought my friend computer because it dint function probebly. Windows BSOD all times on boot and then we made bios reset and formation so we could install linux, It installed but faulty. Nothing worked like they would really work. Friend the bought new comp and i bought him old one (For good price btw ) and checked the hard drive it seemed not have any damage but i saw one pin bended a little i bended back and the hard drive was bit more stable now. I still had proplems but when i made GPart hard drive fix everything was solved after that. But im pretty sure my hard drive will broke again sometime.

So what I read is that you bought your friend a new HD because the old one broke, but the fixed said broke one?
