You can change windows xp to look like Vista. Although I don't think the slow down is noticeable.

Or, using a custom made theme, you can make it look better than both...

Yeah, theme customizing is cool. I wouldn't want my windows to look like mac OSX, but one of those custom ones would be cool.

That's horrible, it's just a complete mishmash of stuff. At least OS X is stylish because it's rather subtle (and the same with Vista to some extent) - whereas that's just OTT

In use, it's actually little like that, David R. I wouldn't use that background if someone paid me, and it looks good on small screens. The blue-green can be a little garish when placed on the same background but it looks alright otherwise.

It's a good theme because unlike many others, it rescales very well.

It does look a bit Linux thinking about it.

The way the window is constructed though... and the start button... eurgh. It looks terrible in all ways - you may want to get your eyes tested

I'm using the 'Royale' theme for xp - apparently it's one ms were going to include but didn't in the end, or something, but you can download it and install it and it doesn't have any slow down at all, because it's just like switching between the 'olive' and the 'blue' theme in the display settings (It comes up as another option). It's not amazingly differnt to the standard setup, it's more of a subtle change, but if you've only ever used the standard setup than you might like it.
There's two actually, 'Royale' and 'Royale Noir' - don't like the noir one much, they didn't get it finished so some things don't look quite right (like the edge of the start button). The 'Royale' one looks fine though.

I like to customize myself to make orginal OS. I remember that the customization was really hard on windows and i dint even have clue where to start.. Anyways this is my desktop. Right now, i may change the standby video wallpaper.

The desktop 1440x900

I never figured out how to install a theme on my computer (even though I followed the instructions directly). Which is a shame because I really like the looks of a lot of themes. Personally, I'm drawn to the one NeX posted. I like it.

@Yodaman Jer:

Download Skinny and find a uxtheme.dll for your version of Windows. Run the wizard in Skinny and then reboot. Any themes you then place in c:/windows/resources/themes/ will appear in the appearance tab of the display properties dialog.

I've mimicked the OS/X desktop before, but never found a dock that was quite stable enough to use on a daily basis. Every Windows dock I tried had at least some annoying bug.

Try rocketdock, if you haven't already. I use it always, never had a problem with it.

It doesn't agree too well with 3D fullscreen games.
