Hi,

I've always wondered about how useful a code editor would be with a ribbon interface integrated into it. For example, imagine Visual Studio with a ribbon instead of the normal toolbars.

It definately would reduce the amount of space for reading/writing code etc

How useful do you think this would be?

Cheers,
Bozzy

I personally would love it, but I know that a lot of people have very big problems with the ribbon interface, so it might not be very popular unfortunately.

Personally, I go for toolbars all the way! The ribbon is just too hard to navigate. But it does LOOK cool.

The ribbon does take some getting used to, but for me it's a lot cleaner, and when you do get used to it, it's a lot better.

Hey, what's a ribbon?
(Not the hair-accessory then of course).

The toolbar in the picture at the top, including the tabs that are listed at the top.

A new interface element which they introduced in MS Office 2007:

It's supposed to replace the toolbar.

EDIT:

Jerico beat me to it...

Oh god that's one reason why I hate the Word 07 so much.

I really don't see how 150 pixel high bar full of randomly strewn buttons is supposed to somehow be cleaner than a 70-some pixel high bar with only the buttons you need and the rest can be accessed through a dropdown.

Maybe if MS offered a choice between ribbon and regular, but personally, I wouldn't like it so much.

Exactly, it's so big that it reduces the space to do the rest of your work -- Why would anyone want this?

Oh, that thing, I see.
Hm, well it can be useful at times, but over all I would have to agree with gbark that it is pretty darn annoying.

This is why developers make the toolbars dockable--- if you have a dual-screen setup you can drag the toolbars to one monitor and maximize the code window on the other.

One guy I know has a monitor rotated at 90 degrees, and configured Windows for that somehow. He can fit a lot of lines of code in that

You can do it through your graphics card control panel. You may also be able to do it by pressing cntl-alt + up/down/left/right. Also, that's awesome!

It's not to do with what OS you have, it depends on what graphics drivers you have; stop blaming vista.

@Quirkyjim - Just so you know I've removed your avatar. In the past we've had people use the mod image to imitate and/or ridicule the mods here and we've removed their avatars too. Sorry

I hate the ribbon interface, it's terrible. Toolbars all the way.

As far as I can see the ribbon is a better looking toolbar with tabs. Thats about it. Annoyingly it is so much less customisable than toolbars which is a lot worse for decent resolution displays. Get a good 1920x1200 resolution and practically all your buttons are there on at most two or three rows, which can be plonked wherever you want. Ribbon? Forget it. Plus I know my way round Excel quite well, but finding anything in 2007 is a pain. Luckily Google is my friend. Turning on developer mode? Sigh...

Personally I would say if designed well then the ribbon could be ok, but it would be nice if someone could make it nice and customisable (put what you want in each tab would be good). Either that or have a shrink/expand option to make it compact into a toolbar view when you want to. ie. Give us the option rather than forcing a ribbon on us that lets be fair is probably only liked (compared to toolbars) by at best half of the people who use it.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Well, this is a pretty intuitive design:
