I got a nerdkit after seeing an article somewhere about DIY Marquee LED Array Display (http://www.nerdkits.com/videos/ledarray2/).

So, i bought one, and it came in the mail about a week ago. I've just opened it and started getting into it, and it's really cool!!! It comes with a programmable microcontroller, an LCD screen, a Piezoelectric buzzer (i guess that means it can make different pitches), and some LEDs, resistors, and a bunch of other stuff. it also comes with a programming cable, and software and drivers to write to the microcontroller, along with a bunch of code examples to help you out.

The beginning project has you set up a power regulator, put in a crystal oscillator for the microcontroller, and hook up an LCD screen to the microcontroller.

Just thought i'd let anyone interested know about this. (when i finish the LED array i'll be sure to post some pictures up!)

Ooooh, I kind of want to get one of those, could be interresting.
But of course, my country is one of the few listed as charging extra import fees...

Your country? Hey share a little will you?

Looks very interesting to me as well, though considering the extra import fees mentioned above and the fact that I don't want to spend the little cash I have now I'll probably not get it.

yeah... if you really knew what you were doing, you probably could get everything for alot less... but you need specialized tools to initialize the microchip before you can load anything on it.

actually... im having some trouble hooking the micropchip up to my computer, but besides that, it's definitely great for learning.

Ah, sweet! i got it working! I can write to the microchip! thats pretty cool cuz we're just going over circuitry in my physics class, i could bring in my LED screen and be like
"Yeah, i made this. Oh, you got a what on the circuitry test? an F? yeh... i got an A... by the way i made this."

AAAGGGGHHH!!! noo! I just finished making and assembling the scrolling LED display with 120 lights... soldering and soldering... and hooking up the wires to the microchip... and programming the microchip... and then when i went to plug it in...

I plugged in my power supply backwards and fried the chip

so... i guess i'll just have to order some more of the chips... and install the bootloaders and stuff... so i'll have to wait for those to arrive.

heh, i've put in the power supply like 30 times before and got it right... i guess i'll be sure to always use a diode.

Hi Neuro,

If you are having problems with your NerdKit you can always feel free to email us at [email protected]. We can try to take a look at it see if we can help. If you actually did fry your chip, we can sell you a new one (preprogrammed with the bootloader), check out the prices at http://www.nerdkits.com/store/ or we can give you instructions about how to put the bootloader on chips that you already bought.
