I got this awesomeness yesterday, and well wowser. This is truly an awesome game, ok the storyline is not original but the visuals are tremendous and the game play feels polished and well thought out. I never played Killzone (1) one the PS2, but my friend has and he warned me that it was too easy. So stupidly I took this on board and started a new single player campaign on the hardest available setting, and I'm now getting killed every two seconds, my record is about 30 seconds but that's because it was a cut scene.

Friends, I hate friends, friends is stupid.

P.S.

I liked the first Killzone, in fact it's one of the few PS2 games I actually bought for myself, that and Half Life. There was something about the original game, it just seemed more tangible than other shooters if you know what I mean. Hope they haven't lost that solidness, certainly on my list when I eventually get a PS3.

What I can't believe is how bloomin long ago it was that we heard about and saw that video - if it takes so long for all the great PS3 games to be released, then I'll stick with the 360!.

On a side note, did anyone hear about Sony's bitching about the DS getting GTA! - they are not happy, saying that the DS is aimed at young kids and shouldn't have games as violent as GTA. The DS version of GTA looks cool, but it's far removed from GTA, even the PSP version. It's top down but not exactly like the original games, your character is tiny, the cars are tiny, the pools of blood are tiny... STFU Sony in other words, they sold shedloads of PSP's on the strength of a much more violent and realistic GTA! What's good for the goose is good for Nintendo.

Yeah it took 4 years in development GT5 still hasn't been released yet, long wait but worth it.

The game very solid indeed, it's hard to know what makes it so enjoyable to play, I think it's a combination of many things. The first thing you will notice when playing is that the movement seems very sluggish, I think this is intentional after all the character is a muscle bound, heavily armoured space marine.

My only gripe with it is that the bad guys have English accents and the good guys are American, but we're used to that now. Yahtzee described them beautifully 'English space Nazis'.

As with all FPS games, you have a big all-guns-blazing-frag-fest in a room/hall/square/street then you move through some linking corridors shooting a couple of guys on the way to the next bloodbath. But, this game somehow makes those things enjoyable. The enemy AI is good too, all in all a very well polished game. Plus you can't just go all cavalier, you have to pick your cover wisely and try and keep some enemies pinned down with covering fire whilst at the same time shoot the orange eyes out of some other guys.

I agree, did you ever play Red Faction? That was a really good one too.

I downloaded the demo of Killzone2, but I haven't decided whether I should buy it or not.
The demo didn't really impress me. Sure the graphics are amazing and the gameplay is fluid,
but it just wasn't that fun to play...
I may buy it later though, if they lower the price.

Ohh yeah, Red Faction is a great game - my son has an incredible collection of PS2 games, but I was always primarily a PC gamer until the XBox and Halo arrived.

We used to play against each other on that level with the 2 sides, like platforms at opposite ends of a quarry or something, you could dig for ages and make cool little sniper spots. Timesplitters as well, but not Unreal Tournament - the DreamCast version of that pwned the PS2 one.

Ohh.... speaking of Killzone - if your at all interested in AI techniques then check this PDF:
http://www.cgf-ai.com/docs/straatman_remco_killzone_ai.pdf

It explains how all the enemy AI in Killzone works, but moreover it makes it so understandable and although I haven't had a chance to put it into practice I learned a great deal from it. It's about as fascinating as dynamic procedural combat tactics could possibly get.

I have to admit, this game looks damn saucy! Whenever I get me a PS3 I'll be sure to pick this up.

Long live the Dutch. In any case, our school had an invitation to send a few of us for testing, which was awesome. The ending of the game is better than most .

My friend says:

"Pretty sweet, but hard," but then that's because he's not that good at FPS games, though I've looked at it and it looks quite cool, maybe worth the moneyz?

It's only hard if you start the campaign in hard mode, it takes like 2-3 bullets and you're eating dirt. It's just like any game I suppose. The enemy can be tricky to kill though they take advantage of cover very effectively. This is what I meant earlier you're shooting one bloke then he ducks behind something and pokes him arm over the top to spray-and-pray in your direction, then there's other blokes gunning for your head and doing the same thing when you return fire. So you have to try and keep as many pinned down as you can and hit whoever dares to stand up first.

You can take advantage of cover too, if you hold L2 down and stand next to a wall/barrel/concrete block or whatever you hunker up to it. You can then use the direction stick to peek out etc.. I've been told this part is very GOW'esque, never played GOW myself so dunno.

Edit By the way Van B that was a good read, nice find.

I haven't got round to purchasing the full game yet, but I enjoyed the demo.
The graphics are beyond anything I have seen on a console game.

Hopefully this is a taste for things to come for the PS3!

I don't find Killzone 2 that good. The enemies all look the same, the scenery is repetitive, and the machine guns are bland. On the + side, Redec is awsomeness The enemies look cool. The knife is sick, and its very cinematic. Still, repetitive. You><Helghast

No way, the controls are very smooth, on par with COD4 I'd say. Admittedly the scenery doesn't change a great deal, war torn cityscape, but it looks beautiful. As for the story line, it is equal to all other FPS games (except a select few) bad guys, you good guy, you kill bad guy, everybody happy, just the same as all the other FPS games out there that people love. As for the shortness I don't know, I've not completed it yet, I only get to play a couple of hours every now and then.

I actually like the standard green sight machine gun, I can't remember what it's called. I think it's up there with the best of the FPS games. This is definitely one of, if not the best pure FPS game produced on any platform. But I suppose it's like anything you either like it or you don't, for instance I cannot see what people like about the Halo series but loads of people love it so.

Lets face it though pure FPS games have just about had their day, they've done just about everything and re-done it that many times that not much seems new any more. It's either WWII fighting the Nazis, modern day fighting some Eastern European/Asian terrorist or it's SCI-FI where you're a space marine fighting some futuristic Hitler'esque evil bloke.

monotonic i agree with you that nearly every FPS is the same these days thats why i think left for dead was a breath of fresh air back to basics just really good fun and i would like to hope that there are more games like that come out in the near future

Absolutely, I think they need to focus on originality now instead of fancy graphics we have that already. I've not played L4D yet but it's on my wish list, I might get it next week actually.

I completed this game within a few days so yeah its pretty short but a lot of the games twists make up for it. Also the multiplayer is probably the best I have ever played apart from BF2142

Looks like another over-hyped blood and gore shoot-em-up-before-they-shoot-you FPS to me.

I'll add it to my list, right next to Halo and COD 4 and 5.
