Look up VLC Media Player. I love it.

That has to be some super strange encoding. Try with Realplayer. (Yes, I will make you google that)
Also have you tried googling the video's name and "not working" or something like that? It's the most obvious thing to do and usually works.

Yeah i have googled the video and it has no problem, well nothing came up =/

Doesnt work with real player too, sometimes it decides to work but some times it doesnt.

EDIT: downloaded the codec from author of the videos website (but still is a black image)

You need a Divx Codec to run Avi's on some computers. It works on all players for me...

That definately sounds like a codec problem. I used to have an application that found out which codecs you needed to run a certain video, it would show you and direct you to the download page. It was brilliant, but i've lost it now and i can't remember the name of it.

I'll finish them whenever i can be bothered.

You can try Media Player Classic. It plays all kinds of different formats, especially the latest version (1.2.972.0).
(there are also other players on that site that I haven't tried out).

If it fails, why not take a few hours and convert the video into something you know you can watch? (I'm sure there are free applications for this).
But then again, you'd probably need correct codecs in order for the converter to understand the native file.

Thanks from me too. I've been unable to view several AVI files till I read this thread and found your post.

Why on earth doesn't Windows Media Player play the files automatically? What is the "automatic updates" procedure for if not to update this sort of stuff automatically?

And what is a "codec" anyway?

A codec is an extension for a media player that allows it to decode a file format. AVI is just a container; there is a multitude of various (and mostly useless) formats that can lie within.

You should all see Total Video Player. Solved a lot of my codec problems (even thought this has already been solved.)

I just use my 360 these days, plays .AVI and even .MP4 files perfectly as long as your console OS is up to date and connected to Live. I download things like LOST onto a USB drive and watch it on my 360. I used to be able to access the files directly on my PC over the network from my 360, but that's borked now for some reason .

For HD media on your PC, I recommend VLC as well.
