I want to make book with self contained reader for iphone, so the users can read the book within the app, so mits not a pdf and the users has to go and get a reader from some place, I want the users to be able to read it from within the app.

Is this possible, is anything available to do this, its only a simple book I want make, perhaps with a menu so users can get to the pages and chapters quicker, so one can jump a few pages and navigate quicker.

Is there anything that enables you to make simple self contained book iphone apps. Its such a simple thing to want to do, but I bet there is not an option that doesnt involve either high cost, or learning a programming language. Can you prove me wrong?

I don't think it exists. Maybe someone can make one for authors and make some money Shouldn't be that hard to whip one up in Objective-C.

I read somewhere that Amazon are releasing their Kindle software for the iPhone (which I assume has the same access to books as the actual Kindle). Not sure if I'd like that though. Until you actually use a real E-reader, people don't realise how much better they are than reading from PDAs/LCDs etc.

Cheers

I've seen one. It doesn't kinda look like paper, it literally looks like a sheet of paper in this device. I had to double-take the first time I saw it

Needless to say, I want one. They're nice too, because you can read wikipedia and wikibooks nearly anywhere in the states, any time. Long trip? Load up a new book. Need to reboot your server? Load up a custom web-based ssh client

Yah, I would consider something like a Kindle if I ever had to do a long bus or train trip, but that's probably it. Just sitting on the bus every morning I can't conceive of anything better than to listen to music or have a real paperback in my hands. There's just something about the comfort of holding a real book that a machine can't replace.

The Kindle also plays music, and as I said, it actually looks like a book

If I were to buy it, it'd mostly be used for reading Gutenberg project stuff. So I'd have a good incentive to buy it

Not sure if it's what you want, but maybe the app Classics? It's an e-book reader but it does work a lot like what you described.

Yeah, I've got the Sony one. Is so much better to use than an LCD screen. Only strange thing is holding something a little smaller than a book that weighs more than a book. Confuses your mind for a while. Lookout for the colour ones though. I saw one on a gadget blog and is supposed to be proper e-ink with 256k colour and a touchscreen. Gibber... Annoyingly is about $1000.

I thought so too (I have about 700 books in total), but the Sony has a nice leather case, and it doesn't take long to adjust yourself to reading it like a book. I just suddenly clicked about a week in. Until then was a bit weird I must admit. A massive amount better than using any LCD screen though (including PDAs, laptops, desktops, tablets, I've tried them all).

@Dazzag - Can you import your own PDFs into the Sony e-reader? I know you can't do that on the Kindle.

I think you can on the Kindle. I believe you submit it online and the Amazon software converts it and sends it to your Kindle.

I might be wrong on that.

Yeah, you can. I've only tried a couple but it seems to work.

I think I read the same thing. I think though that they charge you for each one. Or at least they did when the Kindle first came out.
