Hey guys, I was just wondering if anybody knows how to convert an iPhone to an iPod Touch.

Now, before you all start calling me stupid for wanting to ditch the ability to make calls, hear my backstory.

My friend, who happens to have a little too much money, gave me his old iPhone. (I don't even want to know what he is using now...) The problem is that he didn't include a SIM Card, surprise surprise. The iPhone requires a SIM card to be inserted before it will activate and allow the user to add any music/add any apps/even turn on.

So, I'm stuck with an iPhone that won't work without any way to make it work...

Anybody know?

And mods, if this isn't allowed, please, by all means, lock/delete this thread.

Best,
Crusader2

Presumably it would be easier to find a method of turning off the SIM card check / bypassing the activation, rather than transforming it into an iPod Touch

Sell it.
Then buy an Ipod touch with the proceeds.

No, it has to be a Verizon card, and I'm on At&T.

You could get an easy $400... Since obviously there's no contract involved, and a new one with no contract is $600...

Actually, start at $500 and work down to $400 as the minimum...

That's plenty for an iPod Touch.

It's not new; it was used by a friend for about a year, but is still in good condition, except for the fact that one of the speakers sticks out slightly.

Well, I guess I'm gonna sell it. Any ideas where I could?

Craigslist is best, 'specially if your City/County is listed...

Also, if you meet someone to sell it to them, make sure you have back up, and 911 punched in your cell phone for calling once you hit the button.. You don't want to get mugged if they know you have that piece of equipment on you.

Actually, you have that backwards. AT&T is the carrier for iPhones.

I have been looking into getting an Ipod touch for development purposes. I just found out today that you need a Mac to actually develop for it. That sucks! Ah well.. I guess it is better to not get distracted onto other things.

Same here.. However, you can dual boot windows vista with Mac...

It's $100 for the CD....

I really wanted to get into devving also.. But the minimum $1000 mac book cost was not appealing....

You could probably jailbreak it

Your mother has been erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120

Or you could do what I did and shell out $600-700 for a Mac Mini, perfectly viable for iPhone dev.

Yeah, Mac Mini is the one product in their range that isn't a bad deal. You get a lotta power in a small box. And 5 USB ports.

I was tricked!

I tried my SIM Card (I have a Razr, or however you spell it), but it didn't work. I'll try again later.

I bet the carrier might be able to switch your sim card to work on the iphone. Couldn't hurt to ask.

To convert it, just search online somewhere for a .ipsw file of the iPod touches latest firmware, download it, then plug your iPhone in, open iTunes, and hover over the "update" button when selecting the iPhone, and hit "shift+click". An explorer window should pop up, letting you choose your own firmware. Choose the iPod touches firmware.

Everything should be good from there. I suggest jailbreaking it too so through legalities and such Apple doesn't find out.

Why would they care if you use a more expensive device do what the cheaper one does without using the expensive device features? How would they know?
