I've been looking to expand my music collection, preferably in the symphonic/progressive metal genre. Here is a list of several of the bands I listen to regularly.

Breaking Benjamin
Epica
Kamelot
Muse
Nickelback
Nightwish
Opeth
Papa Roach
Rise Against
Seether
Serj Tankian/System of a Down
Slipknot
Three Days Grace

I'm currently looking into Dream Theater and Iced Earth, and I've heard a few songs from Sonata Arctica. If anyone here listens to some of these bands and would recommend one similar, it would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure of any "symphonic metal" bands, but if you like guitar shreds then:

Rusty Cooley
Buckethead
--DragonForce -- kindof
Michael Angelo Batio

you should try In Flames. It's melodic metal so it's got the singing and some screaming like stuff. Basically its amazing

When you mention screaming it's automatically amazing(ly crap).

And yes symphonic metal is cool, I like Nightwish, Within Temptation(not their earlier songs with the grunts and crap), Therion(not their earlier stuff).

However there aren't many good bands in this genre so I don't listen to it that much, I really can't stand any track with screaming, grunts or generally any kind of inaudible/abysmal vocals as they take absolutely no skill and sound terrible, Epica are very guilty of this.

Hmm, not even sure exactly what that means... Wiki time.... "heavy metal music that has symphonic elements; that is, elements that sound similar to a classical symphony". Right, guessed that. Well obviously the Metallica album is right in there (S&M) considering it sounds similar because they did use a symphony. Good album that.

Hmm, you might also like some of Sisters of Mercy's stuff (goth rock). Personally I put them in my top 5 bands ever list. Awesome stuff.

Cheers

Slipknot aren't really in the same genre as Epica etc, I'd say they were far more metal, industrial metal if I had to whittle that down.

I'm not a huge fan of that sort of music to be honest, not for listening to deliberately at least, maybe just when playing beat-em-ups .

So true.

Anyways, Sonata Arctica is great and all, but not really "symphonic" metal (I think?).

I would suggest you to check out Rhapsody of Fire (formerly Rhapsody) as well as their lead guitarist Luca Turilli's solo works.

Saw them live in London on Sunday, fan-bloody-tastic. Their support bands were Serenity and Dream Evil, who weren't as good, but enjoyable none-the-less.

Not all of the bands under your list come under symphonic or progressive, In Flames for example is Gothenburg Death Metal.

To add to the list:

Dimmu Borgir (They're a symphonic sort of black metal, so yes, growling)
Haggard (Okay, they folk/classical, but worth checking out)
Iced Earth (More power than symphonic, though it has some symphonic elements. I preferred their temporary singer they had in 2007 for the Framing Armageddon album and tour - I've seen Iced Earth twice, and by comparison I think the temporary singer was better)
Stratovarius (One of the bands that inspired Nightwish, the band rather than the vocals)
The Tarjas (Ex-Nightwish singer's new band)
Therion (Now split-up, but a fantastic band)

I'm not a big fan of the "death grunts" either, Opeth being the exception because of the pure epicness of the instrumental sections.

I realize that, the list was of most of the bands I listen to, to give people an idea of my taste.

Opeth's album Watershed is a masterpiece and Mikael Ã…kerfeldt can be amusing when it comes to gigs/festivals. The death grunts work quite well, particularly with some of the schizophrenic nature the music can have, switching from calm and aggressive, then of course comes the progressive instrumentals. One of my favourite bands, I know they will be performing with Dream Theater in the UK this year, so I've got to go and see them, I've not yet seen Dream Theater live, so I really should.

@ dark coder: In Flames arent really like other screamo bands, their singer has a really uniques style, its sometimes a mix between singing and screaming at the same time

listen to 'cloud connected' for a good example of this (i saw it live at soundwave 09 recently and it sounded bloody spectacular)
