just like the question suggests, which one will deliver better performance? They are pretty much the same price, and i am not sure which one will be a better buy, any ideas?

What are you going to use it for?

Tough call...

If you don't have much RAM, probably the 1GB, as it'll let you have bigger textures.

But, 4870 is noticeably faster I think (but only just).

I would say, go with the cheaper one.
They will both demolish any current game.

It probably wouldn't matter.

I haven't done any research, but there can't be a large difference.

Probably just a small one in core clock speeds. Which you can easily clock to match the other.

But it may also be different processor sizes. ie, 45nm and 65nm where the 45nm naturally would run cooler and use less power (no idea if there is this large of a difference in these two cards though).

Also check the memory interface width, for example does the 1gig have 512-bit or 320-bit or etc. Even if the 512mb card has only only 512mb in memory but 512-bit bandwidth and the 1gig have say 320-bit, it may still be faster than the 1gig card. Why? say the 512mb runs at 3600mhz gddr5 ( (3600 * 512) / 8 = 230gb/s ) and the 1gig runs also runs at 3600mhz = 144gb/s.

What's the texture fill rate? (how many textured pixels the card can handle each second).

Why not do some research and keeping the above mentioned comments in mind, and check out the toms hardware vga charts which should have a decent vga vs vga comparison overview for you.

anyway, my post sucked so I'll stop writing now. BYE!

Regardless of that, you might want more graphics ram. If you like running current gen games at high resolution with high res textures, 1gb of graphics ram will go a long way.

Tom's Hardware is one of the better sites for getting benchmarking information.

Hey, i curently have 2gb of RAM, and i will have a look at the memory interface width, the card itself is a good make itself though i think, an Asus

I have a 4870 and it rules, but I don't get as good an FPS as I should. My processor is a 2.20 ghz quad core. My performance would be far better if I had at least 3 ghz. So, if you have a crap prcessor, go for the 4850, if you have an awesome one, go 4870.

Interestingly enough, you should be able to clock it to 3ghz stock Or pretty darn close.

I've tried that. I can't get it any higher than about 2.50, otherwise it crashes

I'd advise the 4850, because it will most likely cause less lag with the same settings as the 4870 would (that is, if you're running under 3ghz).
