Was thinking about re-creating the old game, I just seem to love the good old 2D games of the past...

But on doing some research i bumped into this:
http://uk.psp.ign.com/dor/objects/850551/cannon-fodder/images/cannon-fodder-blasting-onto-psp-20060825094600027.html;jsessionid=1lh1xtpkcxmgc
A 3d cannon fodder game for psp i believe.

I'm tempted to still make something like it, as I've got to do a master's piece, making a game before the end of easter, and i could probably make a playable mission or two. Or have you guys got any other ideas of what game i could make over easter?

Hope they make a DS version .

Cannon Fodder was great, I made a game based on it a few years ago (Operation Invasion Evasion), a lot of fun to work on.

Mega-Lo-Mania was great as well, would love to see a remake of that.

Operation Invasion Evasion, took me a min or two to find it had a play, pretty cool, out of curiosity what did you use to animate the characters. I've tried 3ds Max but when i inserted the models into DBP in .3ds form they came out with limbs going everywhere, the first maybe 10 animation frames were okay though.. hmm

Cannon Fodder is awesome. If you're short of ideas i could give you some. I remember way back in the day i was fantasising about what they could do in a sequel. Cannon Fodder 2 was a bit underwhelming- i think a big problem was that the levels were a bit garish in that - the original cannon fodder had a great aesthetic.

That Invasion Evasion game is pretty cool. I realise it was for a compo so had a deadline, but there are a few things that could be worked on to make it much better. For instance sometimes the troops go different ways when you hit a fence or something. In the original they always stick together (unless you deliberately split them up). BTW i finished level 1 then it crashed.

The original cannon fodder did not allow you to move the view- it kept the player's selected troops near the middle of the screen, and you could look ahead a bit because you'd see further in the mouse pointing direction if i remember right. I think this is a good way to do things.

Also it had grenades or rockets when you clicked both mouse buttons together. I think this was a cool system. Switching squads and stuff via on screen buttons was a little cumbersome- perhaps some keyboard shortcuts, or using the scroll wheel could be cool.

If I could add anything to the original it would probably be more vehicles. Hovercraft. Jetskis. Jetpacks. Maybe more weapons- the badassest weapon in the original was the homing rockets. Howabout tactical nukes? Or the explosive cannon from Robocop? Perhaps Syndicate could be a source of inspiration too.

Good luck! If you want to remake something simpler but that you could later expand to being a Cannon Fodder engine, howabout something like Smash TV?

Thanks for the info Mr Tank, Smash TV i ain't played in a LONG time haha i believe i got it for Christmas on the Amstrad.

I've only got til the end of Easter to get this finished, I'm going to have to rush it a bit, and perhaps if it seems like a cool retro re-make then I'll keep her on as a side project

I was thinking about how they did the troops, and i have a rough idea something along the lines of way points and them stopping within a certain distance. Calculated by how far away they are multiplied by their unit number in the group / distance away from the soldier in front of them, and let the first soldier find the path. Who knows I'll get started on it today and see how far i get ^-^.

Yeah, I always wanted more vehicles, like a tank, motorbike and sidecar, that sort of thing. If I was making a follow up, I'd have lots of vehicles, probably have a WW2 setting.

The soldiers were animated in CharacterFX, the aliens are 3D Studio animated limbs. CharacterFX is free now, and with the low poly character models you'd use in an RTS it would be perfect I think. Quicker to use than 3D Studio, and a lot more straightforward.
