Hmm, something from the Adobe Suite? A video editor? Never used it but that combination sounds like it needs a Cray supercomputer.

My Laptop run After Effects CS3 perfectly well. It is a:

Model: Dell XPS M1530
CPU: Intel Core2 T5800 2.0Ghz
RAM: 4GB
Gfx: Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT

... and it cost £799, which according to xe.com is $1,169.10 so well within your budget.

I really wouldn't bother running it on a laptop. Anything that can use it effectively would most likely have a very large quantity of RAM (4GB+) to make up for the fact that a scratch-pad on the hard disk would be slow (most laptops use 5400RPM hard disks) - which means it's going to set you back quite a bit.

A nice power laptop should be fine if it isn't a mac. Just make sure you go with an upper XPS system with 4gb or more of ram. Like scraggle said, actually.

Personally for me it's their business practices.

They charge too much for their stuff (Way cheaper even at other higher end retailrs (hp) ).
Their Outta state support should be free. The only reason I ever use support is so I can get things repaired. I expect a company to do that for free even if I never purchased support.

Just two of my personal opinions.

Edit: Oh and if you're using a school's After Affects. Be careful. I had a teacher get scolded for using her personal laptop for her classroom (She had attendance software etc on it). They said that she can't do that. Not sure about your state/country but that's the way it was here.

Luckily, us Aussie kids are all gonna get macbooks soon enough. I dunno what they're thinking; the first thing I'm gonna do is install blender and photoshop on there.

Everyone in the class is getting a free premium notebook? How the?

My experience with school notebooks was they were tethered to a base station by ten metre Kensington locks, all had 486 processors, 64mb of RAM, WiFi cards that didn't fit properly and XP. So, yeah, that was fun.

I'm not quite sure what the specifications are, but all I know is that one of my friends overheard a teacher saying that the school's decided to chip in and get macbooks.

Good 'ol mister Rudd.

Everything you mentioned is pretty much what the school notebooks at our school are, except that they are MAC computers. And about 30% of them crash when starting. (Grey screen, apple in the middle and a wheel underneath. It stays like that until you rip the battery out.)

What computer manufacturer doesn't nowadays? Apple especially.
