So recently to increase my productivity in non-PC related life activities I've gone cold turkey and cut my time at the PC by surfing the web less and just cutting out my Facebook account. Anyone feel like this entire online communication thing has gone a bit too far? I mean I see the irony in writing that on a forum but now that Twitter is popular also, the online world has just kinda been taking over.

I ran a little side experiment to see if people would still invite me to events once they couldn't pull up my name in Facebook anymore and the answer is...no. Hehe. People just went ahead and had Saturday get togethers and birthday parties, and if you're not on facebook you're basically non-existant, I remember when my phone just rang when someone wanted to do something, that was a while ago.

I've actually been able to be more productive during my time spent on the PC by working on my website, so that's a pro. Anyone else trying to unplug themselves from the "matrix"?

I thought I read a scathing article in a magazine once criticising that Facebook accounts couldn't be removed?

Oh well, I don't bother with that "social networking" crap anyway. Waste of time, webspace and bandwidth.

I keep Facebook around, because it's actually useful for keeping in touch with old friends. And I twitter occasionally too (mainly use it to keep up with the latest news from Valve and other studios rather than my own tweets)

Otherwise, yeah, I'm not big on social networking either. Most of the activities, other than those mentioned above, seem to be massive pointless sinkholes of time - e.g. myspace etc.

I find that most things I'm invited to are done through Facebook. usually by people I don't see often, so that's understandable. But I don't find Facebook gets in the way, no TGC and my Student Union forums do that just fine. Facebook is just convenient and keeps contact with friends all in one place. You can't always see a person in the flesh or phone them (or where Facebook is more convenient for phoning them)

I'm kinda used to fact that some people on social networking are dumber than NPCs from some games...

Well, I have one social networking website account, but that's because our teacher uses it to send us info if f. ex. one of the teacher will be absent the next day. Still, I go there rarier than once per month...

You know what it's best not to go cold turkey people are addictive to the internet, yes i said addicted along with using mobile phones. It sounds weird but it is a well known fact. You're doing a great thing cutting out things like face book though i deleted my bebo after the novelty of it wore off.

If you've ever watched Yes Man, now that's an inspiring video , go out live life have fun. BUT doesn't mean you cannot enjoy sitting down surfing the web for a little fun. It's all about portions.

I mostly use facebook and TGC really, there's no other communities online that I frequent. I may deactivate the fb account for the exam period this may/june time temporarily, otherwise I'll mysteriously end up on it while revising

I will never delete my Facebook account, as it's how I stay in touch with many of my friends from different states (Colorado, Texas, Wisconsin and Illinois).

I've had many relatives contact me through Facebook, and some old friends as well. I don't even go to it every day, but you're right, it can be a massive time-waster when you get hooked.

Once in a while I go there and see my friends who post status updates several times a day and I just wonder: how did we ever get this far? People are revealing more stuff on there than they would in public.

This one girl on my friends list posts pictures of herself in a swimsuit to keep track of her weight loss. I mean--- I know that she wouldn't sit in a room with her friends in her swimsuit because she's kinda.. well, large and self-conscious. But doesn't she know that she's posting this for everyone to see? Anyone from her city can look at her photos without being on her friends list. And she's a technical gal so I know that she knows what she's doing. I just feel that people are more open on their profiles than they would normally be in person. That can be dangerous!

Anyways, it's kinda fun seeing friends and keeping in touch with relatives. My cousin is the main character on the TV show Being Erica so it's fun going to the different groups and reading what everyone's saying about her

That, my dear Megs, says it all. I'm the opposite. My phone is now clamped in place to stop it ringing off the hook.

Then you clearly need to get rid of your phone, Mr. Phone addict man.

I have a facebook account but I only access it like once every two weeks to look at photos or whatnot. Don't know how to spend more time on facebook, it's just a big collection of tools to creatively annoy people in different ways.

I use my facebook a few times a week, mostly just to see what people are up to and leave random posts. Facebook may be shallow and time-consuming, but I don't find it addictive. What I don't get is MSN. It's basically another reason not to see your friends in person. Just what the hell do people even talk about on there!? I don't think mobile phones are evil. Yes, they're way too prevalent in popular culture, but they're also a fantastic way of contacting people anytime from anywhere.

83% of women tested found Pus in Boots irresistable. (Based on a survey of 172 women.)

What, aside from the fact that they are two hours' expensive bus journey away and they don't have mobile phones? I'd take the train but sadly it only goes to Stoke from here which is completely the wrong direction.

I think you missed the point. It's very useful for having a conversation with people a long distance away, allows file sharing which is useful and it's free unlike mobiles or landlines.

The other night I had an important conversation on Facebook, I didn't have the person's number, nor did they have mine (it would have money anyway), I couldn't speak to them in person as we're in 2 parts of the country, I'll be seeing that person next Tuesday, but only to deal with the issue the conversation was about.

It was a very simple thing, I checked my facebook, a little thing at the bottom appears saying 'Are you free to talk at the moment?' And thus we were able to communicate without it detracting too much from what we were doing.

Facebook ruling your life, however, is another thing, a bit of self-control should solve that one, if addicted, I suppose you need to get yourself off of it. You can't blame Facebook or these social networks, just control yourself.

I wish that was the case. Then I can check voice mails anywhere, at work/school/gym/on the bus, I don't even need to be around a PC.

For everyone saying facebook is great for communicating with friends far away...isn't that what Skype's for? It's free. If you can't be bothered to spend a few moments hearing about someone's life through their own voice than maybe you weren't that great of friends to begin with?

I realize facebook, works for a lot of people, I'm just saying it doesn't for me. As any young person, I hate hearing "Well back in my day before these gadgets..." from anyone middle-aged but for once I'd have to agree, it seems natural human communication was actually better "back in the day" according to national statistics. Here is an article to back m point:

Tried it. Didn't work. Network isn't fast enough for realtime audio streaming here in Blighty.

Personally I've always found it much easier to write to people instead of talking to them, not because I don't want to hear their voice, but because I've just always been better at expressing myself through text. I don't see what's so wrong with it at all.

I was forced to get Skype the other day, and it ran fine. My internet connection is ok, but I am out in the sticks, not in a city. So my Skyping experience has been good. However, I didn't really like it. I found the whole streaming video thing quite distracting, and instead of having a proper conversation (like you may do on the phone), watching each other seemed to get in the way.

Anyway Megs, I would suggest you keep facebook, and just use it for what it is - a tool to assist keeping in touch with people. Don't let it rule you life. I log onto mine about once ever 2 days, and if I don't have notifications, I log straight out again. The only exception is when one of my better looking female mates has put up photos. Then I feel compelled to browse them ... for some reason. Especialy if they went on holiday somewhere hot, by the beach.

No, we subscribe to decent ISPs. I live in the middle of nowhere (compared to you) and I get ~4mbps downstream. Pay some money for an ISP and stop complaining.

I have tried every ISP in this area (that's four) and I have lived in two cities previously. Guess what, it sucks everywhere I've lived in this country. It's not so much the straight speed (which is waaaay substandard) but the latency is embarrasing. Pings of 700ms are common.

I use facebook every once in a while. I used to use it daily. It's gone way down hill ever since they allowed 3rd party apps. Seriously, if someone made what Facebook used to be they'd become millionaires

How does facebook make any money? there's a couple of adverts down the side which seems to be the only thing...but I imagine the costs of running the website must be huge.
I think in a couple of years facebook wont be anywhere near as big as it is today. I've started unadding 'friends' (i.e. people i went to secondary school with, haven't seen in ~7 years and never even spoke to when I was at school with them) - I couldn't care less what they're doing to be bluntly honest. Quite a few people I know have deleted they're accounts/blocked their tagged photos.
Asides from being an easy way to keep in touch with people who live far away and share photos wiht them I dont have much use for it (People uploading photos of every friday night they go out is annoying). Statuses are basically a means of bragging too...

There are adverts literally everywhere on Facebook. And the larger the website, the larger cost justifiable for ad space.

EDIT: Just to clarify, they make advertisers 'bid' on ad space. Advertisers put down an amount to pay per click, and this is submitted as a 'bid' versus the others. The adverts which pay more per click rise to the top and are more likely to be displayed (whereas the others may not be displayed at all)

EDIT2:

Seriously, be grateful. England/Britain has a pretty decent exchange infrastructure - for one thing, it's entirely digital. Compare that to the exchange infrastructure of the US, which has a mishmash of digital and older systems too, along with inconsistent coverage depending on area. In contrast, here in the UK, the countryside is pretty well covered. Oh, and be grateful for the fact you have internet access at all (and the fact it's broadband). All I hear from you (ever) is just continual whining

We've had the discussion before Nex, the internet in the UK isn't as bad as you make out - I'm currently downloading a file from nVidia's website and the trasfer rate is 212kbs, the server is in the US. I'm currently in a small village in Cambridgeshire - it took quite a while for broadband to get here and we don't get a bad speed. When I'm up in Derby on my Virgin connection I get faster speeds - you live in Uttoxeter, as you've said before, that's up the road from Derby, how come yours is so much slower than mine? At University the download speeds are very good, good enough to have a class-mate use lecture time or time after lectures to download any games off of Steam.
