While browsing the internet for the synaptic package manager (one that runs in Windows due to some problems I was having) I came across this link. http://lifehacker.com/5195999/portable-ubuntu-runs-ubuntu-inside-windows

I'm currently downloading the portable version of ubuntu. For those of you who don't want to take a peek at that site, here's what it says:
Quote: "Free application Portable Ubuntu for Windows runs an entire Linux operating system as a Windows application. As if that weren't cool enough, it's portable, so you can carry it on your thumb drive.

Built from the same guts as the andLinux system that lets you seamlessly run Linux apps on your Windows desktop, Portable Ubuntu is a stand-alone package that runs a fairly standard (i.e. orange-colored, GNOME-based) version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. It just doesn't bother creating its own desktop, and puts all its windows inside your Windows, er, windows."

I'm not sure of the credibility of the reviewer, but I'll run it once I've got it downloaded and post my own opinions. I personally find this to be a great tool because Ubuntu can't recognize my SATA drive (It's my biggest drive, and now my healthiest drive.)

Anyways, let me know what you guys think.

Cheers,

-naota

Oh yea, I was invited to their private beta last year. It's pretty cool. You can do some crazy stuff on there. There was an option to run a virtual Direct X, so you can run some winderz games on there.

Ok Just kidding about all of that lol

Anyway, Ubuntu is really doing a good job at gaining ground. I'm talking to more and more people switching to Ubuntu. I love the fact that they give out free disto CDs . I have Ubuntu and Kubuntu sitting on my CD rack. In fact, the Ubuntu live cd saved my computer from a nasty virus (deleted some files that wouldn't go away).

That sounds nifty that it runs INSIDE of windows. Like a virtual PC without the bloat of the virtual PC. Sweet deal. I'll have to check this out.

Yeah, apparently it can run alongside your Windows windows, as Windows windows. :p

I'll mainly be using it for the synaptic package manager (There's a Windows equivalent for just Windows, btw,) and OS dev. Plus, gedit (The Gnome text editor.)

This sounds like just what i need. Does this work, have you tested it?

Will try it out myself. Thanks.

EDIT:

Ok, have tested it a bit. Noticed it was slow to begin with. It appears it to begin with only gets 256 mb of memory. To increase it, and to configure it in general, you will have to go to
"<where_you_extracted_portable_ubuntu>\config"
and open the file in that folder. You can set the memory there, if needed (I set it to 512 mb, and it is much faster now).

Also, some features in Ubuntu does not appear to work. Like System->Preferences->Session, or System->Preferences->Windows. Also, sometimes linux is not directly affected by when you click "outside", like in Firefox running under Windows. Menus can still be there. And there does not appear to be an easy way to access Windows files from Linux (it runs in a VM).

That was mostly negative, but that is because I am picky and notice such things fast. Going to explore it more now!

I'm using ubuntu right now, love it!
Anyway, that's a cool program. looks easier than using a separate VM like I did awhile ago.

If you're interested in this sort of thing you might want to take a look at Wubi. http://wubi-installer.org/

I use WUBI, and it's great, but you have to reboot to switch between them.

I think I'll give this a though to see what it's like.

I think WUBI is kind of horrible... It just runs the installer in Windows and keeps the Windows bootloader. I prefer to just install Ubuntu directly for that sort of thing (at least then it's easy to access my Windows partitions.)

@Jerico2day
Yeah I just tested it. Works great. A little slow like Mr Z said, but it still runs pretty well. And it's useful.

NOTE: You CAN access your Windows files. The folder is '/mnt/C'
You can also (supposedly) add more drives to be recognized.

EDIT: root's password is "123456"

That's pretty nifty. If I didn't already have Ubuntu multiboot with XP, I might use that

Wubi really isn't great, it slows ubuntu down and gives some weird errors because its using Windows NTSF partition. And launches from virtual windows image.

If you want to try Ubuntu then first try the liveCD that everything works (Internet, HDs detected, drivers compatible, etc..) then install to seperate partition. There you have a dual boot system. And when you don't need Ubuntu or Windows anymore just launch liveCD open the GPartEd and remove the partition and allocate more space for the main OS you left with.

I installed Ubuntu and never looked back. All the games i play works quite good in Wine, some with better FPS some with pretty big FPS lost, but all are playable and Wine is just getting better. And the new nVidia beta drivers are really fast!
As for the application it just sounds like VirtualBox (Virtual machine) running in seamless mode aka intergating into Windows window manager.
So to run it so that it wont brother your average Windows speed would need fast CPU.
