hey,,,

Im doing a project at school for a car that will follow infrared lights.

I was wondering if I could by an infrared camera electonic component like thing, like the one in the wii remote, which will return the position of a few infrared dots? It would be connected to a programmable chip.

Does anyone know of anything like that that I could buy?

Thanks,,,

afaik, how it works is your infrared light stays on. You need an IR receiver is all.

You could use a Wiimote. That returns dots and can contact a PC over Bluetooth. You might even be able to wire the car's steering up to the rumble motor or something.

Just try a simple webcam first.

The easiest way to find out if it's compatible is hook the webcam up to your PC and watch the video. Then point a TV remote at the webcam and press a button. If you can see the IR light from the remote, then you don't need to worry about gutting a Wiimote.

If you use a camera to detect infrared you will need something to process the image output from it - like a PC so you're not talking about a very small and mobile vehicle.
If you do want to do it with a Webcam, like Bursar says you can test if it can see infrared by pointing a TV remote at it and seeing if it sees the bright flashes. If it doesn't it could just mean it has an infrared filter inside (behind the lense) which can often be easily removed. If you want to block out everything but infrared to make detecting the dots of light easier you can actually use the flexible disc from inside an old floppy disk. It works surprisingly well to block out visible light but still let infrared through.
