Over the years there have been a lot of games that I've picked up from Target/Best Buy/GameStop etc. without reading any reviews, and in some cases without even knowing at all what the game is about. And strangely enough, I've actually thoroughly enjoyed many of these games. So I recently decided to look some of these up on GameSpot to see what ratings they received, and to my surprise most of them were rated below a 6.0. So I was curious, what games do you enjoy that most others consider to be stupid, childish, or just plain boring?

Here's what I came up with:

Kirby Air Ride
Console: GameCube
GameSpot Rating: 5.1/10.0
Metacritic Rating: 61/100
IGN Rating: 5.2/10.0

For some reason I've always loved this game. It's so incredibly simple to get into yet I can play it for hours on end. And City Trial with a couple friends is awesome fun IMO. Yet unfortunately I only have two or three friends that enjoy it, and they don't enjoy it nearly as much as me.

Chameleon Twist 1 and 2
Console: N64
GameSpot Rating: 5.1/10.0 and 4.0/10.0
IGN Rating: 6.5/10.0 and 6.1/10.0

These were two some of the first video games I ever played, and to this day I enjoy playing through them, especially number one. They were a little wierd--the main game mechanic was wrapping your tongue around obstacles to navigate levels--but IMO that's what made it so unique and entertaining.

Gex 64: Enter The Gecko
Console: N64
GameSpot Rating: 4.7/10.0
IGN Rating: 5.7/10.0

This is, believe it or not, one of my favorite platformers for the N64. Like a lot of other N64 platformers it had a very bright, colorful, happy environment, which is probably why it appealed to me so much as a 7-year old. And yet, even now, years later, I still enjoy playing it.

Bomberman 64
Console: N64
GameSpot Rating: 4.6/10.0
IGN Rating: 7.1/10.0 (ok, apparently this one didn't do too bad on IGN)

This has always been another favorite of mine. For some reason I really liked the level design in this game. And I've always loved games like this that I could play through in one sitting.

I could probably name dozens more, but upon looking over this list I realized that the reason I love these games is mostly due to nostalgia--these games (well, the N64 ones at least) were the first video games I ever played, and I had endless fun playing them with my brothers. However don't let that discourage you from post yours.

Please use Metacritic as it is a better representation, Gamespot alone is crap. Although I'm not disputing that those are bad games. Only two come to mind for me : N3: Ninety Nine Nights for Xbox 360, Sonic and the Secret Rings for Wii and Mad Dash Racing for the original Xbox.

N3 was far superior to Dynasty Warriors in all respects and had some damn good graphics, and I found the character designs interesting, even if the story made no sense. And the game was just plain fun. (61 on Metacritic)

Sonic at the Secret Rings was I think, the best way to do a 3D sonic with out it being 2.5 D. I think it was ruined mostly by the fact that most of the game was small challenges in part of a level, and that players only got to play a few amount of actual levels. But those levels were fun, and the graphics were pretty good for an early Wii game. (69 on Metacritic)

Mad Dash Racing had a decent sense of humor with, again, interesting characters and fun courses. I really don't understand what was so bad about the game. (65 on Metacritic)

I'm actually surprised these are both over a 6, but I consider under a 7 a critical failure. Although Sonic was so close.

EDIT:
How could I forget Red Steel? It wasn't a great title but I think it was fun and serviceable for a first run at the FPS genre on the Wii, and I thought the sword fighting was pretty good. (63 on Metacritic)

Atv X Moto 4 or something for PS2... the programmers didn't even write in the collision-at-upside-down code.

Ditto with Cian on Mad Dash Racing, I was addicted to it for the longest time.

Also, Mount & Blade counts because gamespot gave it a pretty bad rating. That game was sweet.

Armourines on the Playstation. It was a co-op FPS game, and reviewers absolutely slated it. It had ropey graphics, bad animation, was stupidly difficult, and worse voice acting than a Resident Evil outtake.

But... for some reason I really liked it, well once I played through it with a mate on co-op, was quite a bit like Halo when you looked past the on-screen horror story. It was one game where you absolutely had to work as a team, and when you got through a level, you felt like you had actually had to work for it.

Another one would be Men of Valor on the XBox. Again it's co-op mode made up for a multitude of sins, it was practically impossible due to some horrible level design flaws. Some missions you had to basically ignore the set route and practically cheat because the directions were wrong. It was difficult but fun because just like Armourines, getting through a level was a feat of sheer skill and determination. It was quite a pretty game, used the Unreal2 engine and had some very cool foliage. I'd say it was the best Vietnam based FPS game I ever played, and most people detested it. I wish CoD would move to Vietnam for 1 game, it's about time someone did 'Nam properly.

I've updated the first post with IGN as well, but Metacritic only had reviews for Kirby Air Ride.

Another one I just remembered was Earth Defense Force 2017. This game had the corniest and most generic story line ever, and some of the most repetitive gameplay I've ever seen, yet it's one of my favorite games for the 360.

Agreeing on Kirby Air Ride, that game kicks ass. City trial + friends = fun. Sonic Riders, I'd say, falls into this category. It's utter junk with no texture filtering on many levels and overpowered attacks but damn it's fun with friends.

ahh, Sonic Riders was good. Driv3r was a game I enjoyed too, it was just very fun to explore (57 on metacritic).

If you see a thread of mine in GDT, please don't expect it to go anywhere.

Driv3r was fun. There wasn't a whole lot to it, but I think that's why it was fun. Just like sometimes we can play the demo of a game for hours on end but when we buy the final product it spends five minutes on the screen and eternity on the bookshelf.

On that note, Viper Racing.

My favorite bad (or low-rated) games include:

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone (PC)
IGN Rating: 6.4

This was really one of the first PC games I ever played as a kid, and I loved it. I never ever won it (Voldemort is hard to defeat with that mirror!), but I will still play it when I'm bored.

Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (PC)
IGN Rating: 8.0

A much better rating and a much better game. In my opinion this was the best Harry Potter game ever made, it's really a shame that EA didn't continue to use the formula in this game for the rest of them.

As for console games...

I actually like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (NGC), which has a pretty low rating. I got bored and never won it (is it possible to?), but I've always loved the music and graphics in it.

That's really all I can think of right now.

Yes, Yodaman, it is possible to complete Crystal Chronicles. There's this place where you have to cast certain spells on certain objects and then something happens... don't really know, didn't get that far because I kept running off with the challice and my Gameboy Advance has a broken battery cover.

Okay, I'll have to check it out. Maybe. I dunno, don't really have time for a game right now.

Did that really get a bad rating? I thought it was a good game, though I too have not completed it (got past the second filling of Myrr, then my memory card went missing and never played it since), but it was entertaining and the graphics and music, I agree, were quite cool.

I don't know what I'd pick, I can't think of any games that I loved (other than above) that got bad ratings. However, I've looked up a few on IGN and found one:

The Last Remnant: PC 6.8, XBox 360 5.3

I played the PC version and enjoyed it, despite it being repetitive and the difficulty being unbalanced (some bosses were incredibly hard at the wrong times). I reviewed it on the Ozark Games forums as 9/10, I liked the plot and the charcters, on the PC version you can have the Japanese voice actors if you want to, which I preferred because I felt their emotion was more appropriate than the English speaking ones. The ending I felt was satisfactory as most Square games tend to be, especially as I normally complete a game and say 'wait...that's it?' A lecturer conjured up an interesting quote; "the opening line will sell your book, the closing line will sell you next book" and think the same should apply to games, the last part should be wholly satisfying and I've always found that with Square.

I don't think so, I just know that some of my friends (several of which are die-hard FF fans) didn't like it nearly as much as the others.

Well, well. I'm glad to finally hear something good about The Last Remnant, I've been tempted to buy it! Maybe now I will.

Did you know that that's also some random throw-in minigame in Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland? I find that funny

No, I didn't, which is kind of funny because I have that game. Although I haven't played it for several years, so I've probably forgotten about it.

Cian, I'd listen to the bad points as well - download the demo off of Steam, as the game play is pretty much like that through out - it can get repetitive as I said and some bosses are very challenging.

People tend to say buy the PC version over the Xbox one, it's meant to be better made and it has the odd extra feature.

My PC couldn't handle it. But repetitive isn't always a problem for me, only real exception being Assassin's Creed. Boss battles being challenging? If I was turned off from that then there would be alot of games I don't own, but I'll look into other complaints. Although I think it's on sale for $10 at Best Buy so it could be a good deal. Need to double check that though.

$10? That's a good price, in that case, go for it.

Also, if you're getting the 360 version, I think it's not as smooth as the PC version and it might be one of those games best installed on the HDD (As it's based on Unreal 3 it has those strange ways of rendering textures, like Mass Effect does)

Unfortunatly I had confused it with another not so highly rated SE game - Infinite Undiscovery, but I might end up buying that because it has my interest piqued. I'll probably still look into buying The Last Remnant and see if I can actually run the PC demo.

I can't remember ever buying and enjoying a game that had a bad overall consensus score. I helped bug fix on Celebrity Sports Showdown (50, Metacritic), and remember laughing at how... bad it is. Does that count? They even did a Broken Pixels episode on it

All the games I play are automatically rated 80+ on any site due to me playing them. I think.

Either that, or I have great taste.

Why?

Edit: I guess I would have to say my favourite "bad" game is Dai Senryaku 7: modern military tactics for the xbox. More addicting strategy game is hard to come by. It got 5.8 on IGN. It would have gotten 9+ from me.

Mine would have to be Destroy all humans BWU on WII, I agree that the IR was pretty rubbish and the graphics were worse than the ps2 version but I just found it so much more fun and addictive than any others I had at the time. Although now towards the end I am starting to see an even thinner layer of polish on the game and that has almost ruined the experience. I agree with reviewers scores but like I say it was the fun of the franchise that brought me to this game.
