Hey there, I just have a small suggestion that could maybe fix a big problem on these forums.

DISCLAIMER

Ok, My suggestion is, about the stickys.

Across every board, We have stickys.
Stickys contain allot of rules, help, or direction, in themselves, and new people come along, and ask about them all the time, without checking the stickies first etc.

I think, that if the stickies stood out a little more from regular posts, this problem wouldnt be so big.
Maybe make them all have the red !~!! next to them, or even just bold each and every word. I just think, they dont catch the eye enough to a new member, who is eager to learn something that they need to.

PLEASE PUT FOR OR AGAINST IN ANY POST YOU MAKE IN THIS THREAD

TO

MAKE IT COMPULSARY TO READ THE STCKIES IN EACH BOARD BEFORE YOU READ/POST

Those For: 11
Those Against:None

Thanks for your time

Acctually, I have noticed that when I scroll through forums I ignore all the stickys and start reading from the first proper post. I dont choose to ignore them, I just dont notice them.

I am FOR

Ok, thanks for that.

This could make a big change to all the newcomers that are welcomed into the forum, a way they dont want to be, with a noob slap!

I am for, but I think that to stand out more, they need to be colored red or something.

Take a look at RickV's 'non-constructive posts' thread. Is that better? I think that's about as much as we mods can do without code changes to the forums.

IMO, thats half way there, if the text was red and bold, or the picture, with my experience with forums, can be changed quite easily, just anything to make it stand out from a regular post, a tiny bit more than that.

How about a red glow round the edges of the title containing box?

They need to get the Rich Davey back to fix this problem. He should be able to do it quite easily though. I am for this change.

How about starting at the top of each board and read the threads that are always there?

I feel that they just don't stick out enough, all there is is that little icon toward the side. Newer members generaly are eager to ask their question ,and skip all else, because nothing is eyecatching

This can be done if a moderator marks a thread offensive. No code to mess with and it get's a set of red !!!'s

or you could make it a requirement for every user to read every sticky in a particular forum before he can post there?

Rich coded this forum right? So he has the ill skillz at his disposal to add in a few features. While I am for this idea, I think it'd be a good idea to make it so that you are not allowed to read posts on a forum until you have read specific high importance threads (i.e. mega stickies). So when someone joins and comes to the forum for the first time, the only theads they see are the mega stickies, or alternatively, the main sticky is automatically loaded the first time they come in. Something along those lines. When these mega stickies are changed, that is reset, so we all have to read them. If they're high importance and we should read them, I don't see anything wrong with doing that.

It doesn't matter how in your face the stickies are, people will still ignore them. It's not because they can't see them. It's because they don't care. They haven't learnt the netiquette which deems they use the 'search' facility and look at the stickies before posting.

I just don't understand how people manage to read the first thread below the stickies, but not the stickies themselves!

Changing the background colour is a relatively simple change, so I've turned unread stickies green.

Hmm...

I'm guessing from other people's comments it's a green background instead of the standard grey? This is what it looks like in Firefox 3, I'll see what it looks like in IE.

Isn't IE dead already?
I would really hope so, if it cant follow other browsers in web standards then its just holding web desinging and applications back.

Well, I can see the green in IE! I like the color, it's purdy...

EDIT: Okay Paul, I'll look into that.

My best guess is that if your browser has cached the common.css file it won't have the new style. Works in both Firefox and IE here.

IE is still far more popular than other browsers, according to this anyway, which may or may not be accurate. If a website is optimized for one browser, it needs to be optimized for others as well. If a website is optimized for IE and not Firefox, and Firefox has trouble accessing that website for whatever reason, it wouldn't be the fault of Firefox, so it shouldn't be any different in the opposite case.

I think IE has an unjustly negative rep. I use both on my PC, and to be honest, I prefer IE8 over Firefox. The layout is better imo, and most sites tend to look better (also imo). The biggest arguement against IE is security, as far as I know, but if Firefox becomes the dominant browser, jerko malware makers will focus more effort toward Firefox, and then IE would become safer down the road. At least, that's how I understand it anyway... I'm the worst web designer alive though so I'm probably wrong, lol.

I cleared my cache and it works now. That is really a nice shade of green and is very noticeable!

A mod can now lock this thread as it is pointless.
