Geek Culture / I have always wondered why does this forum not have a PM system?

Benjamin your still around! Sorry to hijack the thread a little but I've missed seeing this guy!

But yeah a PM system would be great, but it's hard to implement I guess so it's never been done! Then again if you've got the time and knowledge, then I contact Rich, or Lee!

A PM system hasn't been implemented because, if you need to contact someone privately you can email them, and if they don't have their email posted it's probably because they don't want to be contacted.

Someone always says that.... But it's true.

It may be true for many people, but not for me. I dont give out my email because I don't want to be contacted using my email address by random people asking stupid questions. In the past, I have been harassed on MSN, and asked questions about games, asking me to join a team that will never be successful, or asking me to spend 10 days explaining how I did something, to someone who can't be arsed to learn it themselves, and clearly won't understand a word I say. But I don't mind having said pointless harassment via a PM feature, because I can ignore it until such time as I come to this forum.

So, even though there were other good reasons why Rich never implemented a PM system (I can't remember!), I am still a champion of one.

Just make another email account like hotmail or gmail for free just for spam or even just this forum. i have one email [email protected] that i use for signing up for random junk and then i have my [email protected] for legit things. I currently have an average of 100 spam messages a day on my hotmail one.

It would solve the spam problem, that's for sure. I don't like putting my email on forums either because it usually get's harvested. A PM system would be wonderful.

Don't like being messaged? Don't turn it on.

Like being messaged but get overwhelmed with new user questions? Don't respond.

See that's probably because you post your email addresses .

Spamming actually doesn't happen that often when you list an email address here, in fact my work email address gets much more spam, and that's not listed anywhere - you can't hide from spam, sometimes your better off not bothering.

That's very true. I have an email account that I've had for about 3 years that gets at least one or two spam messages every two weeks. Granted that's not a huge amount, but it is kind of annoying.

Anyway, I too think a PM system would be really cool, but I see why Rich doesn't want one. And plus, I'd never use it...

I would definitely use a PM system. There are loads of people on the forums who are difficult to contact except for posting in one of their threads. I think that PMs will improve the forums as everyone will beable to contact each other easily and will also get rid of the occasional thread that pops up in geek culture which asks another forum member a question. Very annoying. I dont like writing personal messages onto threads, but I usually do if they dont have any other contact information. This system can also be used by TGC to alert users to vote for awards or when a new product gets released.

That's why TGC publishes a newsletter each month.

Why there isn't a PM system? I guess its more trouble implementing it than coming up with vague and/or untrue excuses. Because honestly, we've all seen this discussion 30-40 times by now, and the same excuse keeps coming up (you've got e-mail!) and the same people explain in the same words why thats not a good reason to not have a PM system.

And in the end, the thread'll just end up locked, no disrespect to the mods intended by the way. Although this time, for the first time ever, a PM-system related post'll have that cute little "Locked"-template in it.

What was the point of your post? You're pointing out the fact that this discussion comes up several times, a fact that has already been pointed out, and you're making it sound like the mods have a conspiracy about not making a PM system.

For starters, the mods do NOT have access to the forum source code, so everything we say about the supposed difficulty in implementing a PM system (which, believe me, shouldn't be hard) is just speculation. Even if we wanted to do it we couldn't. Feel free to pass the request along to TGC yourselves if you're so bent out of shape about the lack of a PM system. Many regular users here have voiced their opinion that there's no point in a PM system as well.

Here's an idea - why doesn't someone make a portal to TGC, which provides a PM system header or footer? It wouldn't be truly integrated, but it'd be better than nothing, and much better than a poke in the eye.

I would pay 1 English pound for said functionality.

Oh, sorry. I was not aware that posting my opinion about a subject that comes up frequently is considered a waste of forum space. Good that you tell me.

I am very well aware of the fact that you have no access to the source code. I just seem to see a trend about how these topics end up: ignored or locked because 'we've talked about this before'. Honestly, I'm not blaming the mods - I think you're still doing a great job at keeping the forums clean and pleasant. Kudos to you guys.

How would one contact this elusive TGC-master that has access to the source of Apollo?
