Is it possible to install Linux on an external hard drive, and boot from it? Also, will the installation overwrite the MBR of the internal drive?
I know my BIOS can boot from a usb device.
The distro I was planning on using was either Fedora or Ubuntu.
Edit:
By the way, this will be running in a laptop.

Yes, it's possible. If you are linux noob, get Ubuntu.

I've worked with fedora in the past, and I found a nifty utility in the link you gave me (liveusb-creator) that will install fedora within windows, selecting the drive I want to install it to (thus no mbr overwriting, and fool proof installation, including usb storage devices).
Thanks.
