Hey all,

I'm thinking about buying a Dell Inspiron 15 (as it's only $100 more [including shipping+handling and tax] than the Acer Aspire One netbook), and I'm thinking about dual-booting Linux Ubuntu on it.

What really attracts me to the Dell is that it's got 2GB of RAM clocked at 800MHz, a CD/DVD burner (which I really need), a 160GB hard drive (perfect for dual-booting), a 2.16 GHz processor and Windows Vista. It totals to $454.76, which is pretty good for a laptop like that.

What I really wanted to ask is if any of you Linux users recommend dual-booting Ubuntu on a Dell. I really want to, because I like both Windows and Ubuntu for the same (and different) reasons.

So...do you?

If it's this laptop then its got a dual-core processor: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-I15-156B-Notebook-Pacific/dp/B001R95IDM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1241230555&sr=8-1

More expensive though. Pretty sweet deal if you can get it for $454.

It's not that exact laptop, but really close. The OS for the $454 one has Vista Home Basic, not Premium, isn't dual-core and has 2(not 3) GB of RAM. Other than that, it's pretty much the exact same thing.

hahahaha, that made me laugh. That's a lot of differences.

I don't know why running Ubuntu / dual booting on a Dell would be a problem at all. Just like any other machine, right? Unless you're wondering about drivers. If you're worried about drivers, search the individual parts and check out compatibility. But I haven't heard of anyone having driver problems with linux in quite a while.
Jaunty, the lastest release of Ubuntu, is quite amazing as well. Really fast. I've been using it exclusively since one of the earlier betas. It's so nice.

I've decided I'm definitely going to go with Dell.

Hehe, yeah, I just didn't look so much the first time. I just noticed the big things (differences in RAM and such) and posted about it. I admit, I skim pages!!

Yay! I've actually wanted to run Ubuntu for a while, it's one of the main reasons I want the laptop. I was a little concerned about drivers, but I asked a couple of computer gurus I know (who use Linux and swear by it) if it would be alright to run it on that Dell and they said it should run fine.

Earlier I was looking at the Acer Aspire One netbook, and I priced it at $350 along with an external CD/DVD drive at $65, and it totaled to $415. So the Dell at $454.76 isn't that much more expensive, just $36 more.

Thanks for the input JoelJ!
