Earlier today, my mom, my step father, and I were watching tv.

The next thing I know, my dog is barking. My first reaction is to look outside.

I see a dude walking away from the house....

Well, not only did her walk up to the house, but he stuck his head in the door. When he did, he saw are HD TV (4x-5x", I dun remember.), our DVD's (Houndreds), and games (Around a houndred as well.).

There have been increased robberies in my area recently, and I am starting to get paranoid because someone I do not know know where we live and what we have, also he has enough balls (excuse my language, slightly mad here too.) to stick his head into the door without knocking.

Also, my step father asked him if he needed help, and he said he did not know anyone was even living here.... THERE WAS A (insert bad word here) CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY WITH STUFF IN THE YARD WITH AN OPEN BIG WINDOW WITH A TV ON! Who in their right mind would think that no one would live in a house with a car in the driveway!?

So yeah, I am slightly paranoid right now... Your thoughts?

My thoughts? You have too many movies and games...

What can I say? Make sure you lock up at night, get a security system (if you don't already have one) and take all precautions you possibly can.

Lol, not bad to have a collection. Also, regardless of games and movies, people still break in.

Quote: "What can I say? Make sure you lock up at night, get a security system (if you don't already have one) and take all precautions you possibly can."

All locks are locked, we had a security system, but it was canceled, but it is still hooked up, and we are taking precautions.

But even with those, that still does not prevent people from breaking in. All I can do is arm myself with my throwing star and hope they do not come!

Or some grenades. And maybe a taco.

In all seriousness, there's not much advice I can give you that you haven't already listed. I completely understand being paranoid, that would be VERY suspicious, especially since he used quite a bogus excuse.

"Set phasers on stun." Good advice!

Btw, I don't think army surplus stores sell mini-bazookas...but one can dream!

Set land mines all over your house, that should keep you safe. If you step on one and it goes boom then that means it works.

If you don't have lots of money to spend on military equipment, just get a baseball bat and keep it by your bed or something. Make sure to get a wooden one, not aluminum. Wood bats give a much more satisfying crunch on bone, especially if you catch them in the jaw or chee

If you and your parents are seriously worried about robbery, you could invest in a taser. That, or an AA-12 shotgun: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnrizaO-X00

Now that you've caught the slimy git checking your place out, he will either be running away very very quickly, never to bother you again because now he thinks you are suspicious, or he doesn't care, will be very determined to get your TV and games and come back with a shotgun. The first one is more likely IMO.

You should go with Lemon's idea of an AA12, plus if you use it you'll get a month's worth of mincemeat.

Having said that, after reading the original post again, you shouldn't be paranoid if your parents live in the house with you. This is a sort of question you should be posing to your parents, not us, because anything that we suggest (getting a weapon, extra security) isn't something that you'll be able to do anyway.

If you're not a child, accept my apologies.

Just go with the flow. Use common sense. If they break in and you're not home who cares ... it's just stuff. If you are there and you are bigger, bader, meaner, and or get the drop on them ... ATTACK. If you are not however run or hide really well. Simple. Also for any of the above ... if you have a life insurance policy make me the one who gets the money.

I have had the same problem where I am living now, When My family and I first moved into this apartment of ours. for the first couple months we used to leave our apartment door unlocked so my girls could go in and out without having to bring their keys with them.

I was in the back room playing my guitar and suddenly my dog starts barking like mad, I got up to see what the fuss was about and to my surprise there is some dude standing in my dining room. I asked what he wanted and his excuse was " Sorry man I thought this was my apartment" and he left right away. He was a foreigner and lived in the apartment above us, which I did not know at the time. Anyway I never did bother to call the police as nothing was missing.

But to cure the problem only cost us a little over a dollar,
At the local dollar store where I live they sell these little alarms that run on a battery. You peel of the paper on the back of them and stick one part to the frame and the other to the door. Now I have an alarm on that door, And believe me the neighbors know it, this little thing is loud and ever since we put it on we never had problems with people playing with our door. which has actually happened a few times before the alarm. Mostly people probably just checking to see if we leave it unlocked.

In most cases when a thief checks out your house their not only looking for what they can steal but are also looking to see what type of security you have as well. Meaning things like alarms and dogs. Dogs are about the best thing to have, most thieves are cowards and usually will hit the houses that are most vulnerable.

Do you have a big dog? If so chances are he probably would'nt bother.

Buy a gun, although you're American so I assume you already have one. If you accidentally kill him with it your defense can be "I didn't kill him, the bullet did".

Thats not always the case.

When I was younger my parents place got robbed. We had a very large dog. The thieves came, shot the dog in the head and continued to steal almost everything (they went as far as stealing food out of the fridge as well). We were only gone 2 hours (we left to go do some shopping). After that point my parents purchased a gun.

Two months ago my moms new place got robbed (at night while everyone was there). They didnt break into the house, they stole everything outside (lamps, lights, patio stuff, chairs, etc) and again she had a very large dog, and it was shot.

When it comes to thieves and people who break into places, its best to assume they are armed with some type of weapon. Best defense is to own a gun, and if someone breaks into your home while you are still there, pull the trigger and ask questions later.

These scum bags mean business, and if they are willing to kill a dog, then they will not think twice about hurting you or your family.

And if you are worried about going to jail for killing a thief, just remember its either them or you. And if a police officer has the right to shoot someone who simply holds out a knife to them, then you have the equal right to defend yourself against someone who broke into your home (because you have no idea if they are mentally unstable or what they are capable of). No jury in the world will send you to prison for defending yourself or your family.

@Quantum, Where I live that would be a rare case and a bit extreme but I guess a person would never know.

I do agree with grandma though, you have to be careful when using a gun for defense, whether they have a weapon or not, unless they actually intend to cause you bodily harm, which most often your not going to know that till it happens. which usually can be determined through signs of struggle of some sort. You can still be charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The two cases that happened to my parents happened probably a few hours away from you (in south-central Ontario) in a place that has a really low crime rate (which has been on a exponential rise since the massive economic downturn).

Personally I'm not too concerned with break-ins because I live in a apartment in a secure building in the downtown core of a city, so break-ins are more rare. But if I lived in a suburb or outside of a city then my wife and I would definitely go get a FAC/PAL and purchase a firearm.

Again if someone broke in, and was brandishing a weapon, I'd have no problem with pulling the trigger. Because I'd rather be in prison for a few months for protecting my family than being dead at the hands of a scumbag.

I can believe it, that's because law officials will always say something along the lines of " Well you should have just given them what they want and let us handle it." lmao sad but true.

Even then, when and If they do find it they would take it from there alright. It's not often you hear of anyone getting their belongings back.

Hm, there is a gun in the garage, but I do not know where it is, and I think it is mainly just for target practice than shooting people, the bullets were small. 0.o

If someone did break in, I would have no problems cutting him up some, that would not bother me. All I know is that he was with his wife who was in the car. If he does come back, I am ready.

I remember hearing about this case in which the robber fell through a glass skylight on a house he was trying to rob and sued them. The robber won.

Very messed up, kind of like the McDonalds case where the lady sued because the cup of coffee she spilled on herself was hot. It's amazing what people can get away with now. I would talk about the US's court system, but you never know what can lead to politics.

Maindric, stay safe man. I would definitely set up a camera in my house in some obscure place. Hmmm, it'd be interesting if there was an Iphone app that would let you hook up your Iphone to a camera and could view the feed anytime. It'd only help if you had an Iphone and if there was such an app, but it's an interesting idea.

you didn't kill him? and you call yourself an american!
maybe this is a good excuse to upgrade your security unless its already good. My town had a "crime wave" a few months back but our house was fine, probably because of the badass black iron railings surrounding it
As long as you make your house look hard to break into they probably wont bother.
I would think he's been put off by your family confronting him. You'd recognise him so he'll probably stay away. If in fact he is a burglar.
