Just watched it, to be honest it seemed more star warsy than any other star trek movie, probably just targeted at a younger audience, anyone else see it?

I could never get into the sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Star Trek, so I will most likely skip this one. It does seem a little bit more, action packed than the rest though..

I wasn't really planning on seeing it, but it has received amazing reviews, so I probably will see it. It has an 84 on metacritic, which is incredibly good for movies, with the lowest score so far as a 50, which is better than most movies averages.

Just watched it as well! Amazingly, it was actually a decent movie. I personally felt that they did a great job of casting the characters, each person felt matched well to their role. If you're looking for something that melds right into the star trek universe, you might be a little disappointed, due to the director taking a few creative liberties. It's still an awesome movie on it's own right though and should not be missed.

And yes I can kind of see how it's a bit more star-warsy. Honestly though, I didn't think that was such a bad thing. It's got more action for sure, but it's still definitely star trek.

My only complaint with the movie was how the "engineering" section of the ship looked like a warehouse or some other industrial complex.

Other than that it was a great movie.

On my personal scale, I'm giving it a 10/10. If the humor wasn't in there, it probably would have been an 8/10. I thought it was actually pretty funny lol.

My only complaint, even though I do think he was the perfect person for the role, was that the guy who played Kirk looks like he is from a boy band. Other than that, superb acting, story and special effects.

Go see it!

Not sure, but I heard it takes place in an alternate universe or something like that, so it would not collide with already existing Star Trek stuff.

In either way, can“t wait to see it!

It was really good, I think they did a great job of bringing startrek into the 21st (or should I say 22nd?) century.

This movie was amazing, plain and simple, whether you're an ex-trekkie, a trekkie or not a trekkie, it's easy to get into, action packed, a good family movie too, 5/5 from me.

Yea I just got back from seeing it. I haven't ever followed Star Trek previously and I think I got the gist of it. It was very action packed.... I don't think I have ever seen as many true nerds at on place than tonight.... so... many... nerds watching it... hah good fun though.

12 Rounds was a much better movie. Better plot, better suspense. And there weren't any green chicks in it.

Just got back from the theatre with some friends. I really thought it was a great movie. The special effects were awesome, the story felt Trek-ish, and the new actors were great. I could have done without the corny jokes which, in movies, always keep me from getting completely sucked in, but aside from that it was really good.

heh, agreed

I'm definitively gonna catch it sometime this week, I haven't really heard anything bad about the movie and it's getting good ratings all around, so why not? This should at least hold me over to James Cameron's Avatar.

my taste in music isn't weird, its just so amazing your ears haven't quite adapted to it yet.

It was a good movie, and the jokes were just a lot of inside ones like the red shirt dieing (they always die!), the Russian voice, and the "I am a doctor not a physicist!" Still was great, but this is going to sound odd but it DROVE ME CRAZY! All through the movie there was lens flares and bright blobs! I see the fact that 90% of the stuff was blurred with depth of field, but then then there would be a huge white blur in a series moment and it was bright then add the 50 streaks of light all over peoples faces. It was kinda annoying, but a really good movie!

Oh, you mean that its weird to say that if Jeku, a well-known critic, is explicitely positive about something, it probably is good, or are you blinded by his mod-badge?

Sure odd of you to get so defensive though. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

Debatable. I really liked both. BUT, IMO, I liked Dark Night better.

I dunno--- I guess I didn't really like the slapstickiness of some of the characters (Scotty, for example). It's unfortunate that summer blockbusters feel like they have to sprinkle in cheezy humour all the time. They even went a bit "George Lucas" with Scotty's alien friend.

Funny you should mention this, as I noticed this too, that the lighting was really different. I LIKED the blobs of light and the dusty blurs--- it made it feel more realistic and gave the scenes "weight", if that makes sense.

Also noticed it, although I'm a little mixed about it. Some shots it just seemed to get in the way, other's it really enhanced the scene. It did give the movie a nice futuristic edge to it though and overall I felt it was a positive effect

Well there has to be one naysayer!

Actually I'm not going to criticize it, I thought it was a very good film. The actors got into their characters very well, especially Karl Urban who played Dr. McCoy I thought extremely well. I do think they ruined Uhura's character, in the original movies she was in love with Scotty. Also the way in which they changed the Star Trek history was a little disappointing! Spocks mother doesn't die! Vulcan doesn't get destroyed, and the older Spock appears to remember Kirk as being a good friend, although he has in fact supposed to not remember.

Then again I can see this as being in an 'alternate' Star Trek universe, like saying that the older movies happened but the time continuum was disrupted, and so these events happened. But still being a Trekkie fan, I was a little upset, lol.

But that's not to say it wasn't a good film! I did enjoy it and I will recommend people to go see it! After all I'm not really a film critic!

As a non-trekkie, I really liked it, in fact I'd say it's the best film I've seen in months.

The casting is supperb IMO, Simon Pegg as Scotty with that accent, just the right balance of anger and gibberish, perfect!. Karl Urban looks so much like a young Bones it's creepy, and Zach Quinto from Heroes is the perfect choice for spock.

People need to disregard the old movies and series, let the new guys concentrate on making entertaining films instead of worrying about peeing off trekkies. I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the sequels bring, it's obvious there will be sequels, otherwise we'd have seen some Klingons. I say just forget it's Star Trek and go watch it on it's own merits, if you go and watch Fast and Furious instead then you are a fool!.

It's as off as assuming I've got something brown under my nose. Come on, if you act childish, don't suddenly go all 'mature'. You've already proven you're not.

On top of that, I'm not going to clog this thread or waste my time with more of this dialogue.

Bravo for the most spineless 'come back' in history. It's also worth noting that we do not appreciate rudeness or just distastefulness in this forum. The brown nose comment just seems to be a form of snide 'sniping' for no particular gain. Re-Read the AUP, but most of all, learn to read the thread, and the people in it.

The best action to take now, MIDN, would be to stop posting. You're making a fool of yourself and clogging the thread.

(Wheeee, back on topic) I haven't seen the film, but some of my friends (Who aren't Trekkies) said they saw it and didn't much like it, but the general consensus here seems to be that it's good. I guess I'll have to watch it and find out.

Here's a review http://www.mercuryrapids.co.uk/startrek2009review.htm, not from me I might add. I enjoyed it, there were a few "what the...?" moments but overall I think that cast could do a damn fine job as the new crew.

I found the movie to be very entertaining some of the comedy though the movie was very well done. I watched pretty much all of the original Star Trek Tv shows with my dad when i was young. Seen all movies and would have to say this is one of *the* best yet.

I liked Nemesis but it was only okay atleast J.J.Abrams trys to keep that Star Trek feel and he exceeds at it, even if the original didnt have those silly lights over the "keyboards" as i like to call them, but gives a sense that they do not have the tech yet to have them self lit like in Star Trek: TNG were all the keyboards are back lit.

Excellent movie, im going to see it with my friends on wednesday. should be a good time. Its worth atleast seeing once.

I actually have to take back quite a bit of what I said! The reason I assumed it was 'off' is because the time continuum was in fact altered. So this is sort of an alternate Star Trek.

Which makes it a much better film thinking back.
I'll hopefully get to see it again!

Kirks time was never like TNG. In voyager Captain Janeway, said that they where all a bunch of starfleet officers who'd be drummed out of the acadamy today. It was always more of a cowboy western style frontier, where they where all bit too quick to pull their phasers.

In that spirit I think the film caught the universe very well. It was certainly much closer to Star Trek II, the wrath of Karn, then any other movie in the series.

But the film did one thing that TNG never did. It was willin to show people as, imperfect still. Swearing, cussing, sexual remarks, violent disagreements, stress, and humour. It showed what TNG, DS9 and Voyager have lacked for many years. Humanity as we see it today. In many way's TNG showed us humans in their ideal form. Kirk's time shows us humans still trying to find their way in a very choatic universe.

On that basis, I think this movie (and I was a strong advancant against it for a long time) has not only breathed new life into it, but had the courage to show human's as flawed, non-perfect peace keepers who don't always get it right.

I think, that while some will be against this movie. The vast majority of people will love it. It manages to show Kirk, a little younger, a little greener, and a little bit more messed up. But a more interesting, sympathtic character for it.

I had planned to see the movie in a few days, but now that I've heard of all the inconsistencies I'm not so sure I want to. Yeah, they can call it an "Alternate Universe" but what's the fun for me, as a Trekie, if there's no continuity?
