I was sitting here at work, contemplating whether I should work or not, and being so bored already, and with half an hour left until I am done here; I decided to browse the web.

Somehow I remembered reading ages ago that Eidos were supposedely working in secret on a new Thief game. I decided to check out their website to see if any new hints are out. What I was greeted with, instantly made me jump out of my office chair in surprise.

Sometimes, browsing the web instead of working has its advantages. Especially when the web browsing converts your tired, aweful mood into a joyous experience.

Eidos-Montréal is excited to unveil, our previously secret second title in development at the studio, as Thief 4, the next instalment in the legendary series!

The original Thief title revolutionised 1st person gaming and defined a new genre of stealth based game play. Thief has consistently met with critical acclaim, with the revered series winning awards for its originality in gameplay and sound design. Thief’s list of accolades includes a birth in GameSpy’s Hall of Fame and GameSpot citing Thief as one of the Greatest Games of All Time. Thief’s script and ground breaking sound immersion design was recognised by The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and was awarded its prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Character and Story Development award and nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design.

"Were in the early development stages for Thief 4, but this is an incredibly ambitious project and a very exciting one. It's too early for us to offer any specific game details, right now we are focused on recruiting the very best talent to join the core team at the studio and help us make, what we believe will be one of the most exciting games on the market."

Yea, if you are up to it you could probably apply for a job at Eidos montreal now, and work on probably the best game ever! (since Thief 1).

Sorry about any spelling mistakes. We only have iexplorer 6 here at work, which doesn't have any spelling correction functionality. And (obviously) we aren't allowed to install stuff other than work related material.

I sincerely hope this fourth installment won't be such a dissapointment as Thief 3 was.

edit,
Old memories are coming back to me now. I seem to recall something about thief 4 was going to take place in a modern day setting. That could be interesting, however, it would totally ruin the concept which made the series so great and the "feeling" of playing thief would be lost. If they add a 3rd person camera view, it would simply be splinter cell under a different name.

Anyone know more about this?

They had a 3rd person view for Thief 3 (it was optional), but this is good news, I enjoyed those games and am glad to hear they're working on another.

If it is a modern day setting, then I hope that they manage to keep the same feel...though I can't exactly see how it would work without changing it too much, for a start I loved the weapon set up, bow and arrow with a sword, the sword is great for close encounters and the bow with all of its various arrow types.

Though I think you're right in saying that a modern version would be like splinter cell (just with paganism), because some of the features are similar, but we shall see in time.

It's funny, but I always like the idea of the Thief games more than the games themselves, in fact the age old Thief 1 demo is so cool, I'm sure Thief 1 is the first PC game I ever bought, and it's the one that dissapointed me the most.

See I was expecting to explore dim lit streets, churches and castles and all sorts of cool medieval gothic stuff. Instead I got Tomb Raider after about 4 missions or so. They had it right, the game was excellent and challenging and everyone wanted to play it, no matter how frustrating and difficult it could be. Then we get to the supernatural crud like zombies and dinosaurs and god only knows what else. Thief 2 was the same. Thief 3 doesn't even deserve a mention despite the fact that I quite liked it.

Shut up Van, I know... But my point is that all I want from a Thief game is to go around stealing stuff, however I see fit, as much as I can fit in my backpack, and I don't expect to find any zombies, skeletons, or Matthew McConaughey anywhere. I had more fun in the little Thief 1 demo than all the other Thief games, including Thief 1 put together.

Anyone else hope that they make a straightforward stealth based thievery game with dark visuals and a sandbox style freedom?

I completely agree VanB. I found Thief 1 a bit annoying on the difficulty scale - but I liked Thief 2 with the mechanical theme. The random usage of zombie things though - that was really tedious, in both games. I want to be a thief, dammit, not a zombie slayer!

It's true that Thief 1 had far far too many crypts and caves and haunted cities and other supernatural stuff. The same rules of "hide in the darkness, distract using noise" etc. still works on the zombies and fire elementals, but somehow it's not as satisfying as with human guards. Thief 2 seemed to improve upon this, though: there were more "big money-filled mansion" levels.

However, I wouldn't like to see the supernatural stuff go altogether. While the purely naturalistic levels can be brilliant (that fooftop level preceding the Party level was pure gold), the most memorable levels have always been the really terrifying ones: the Cathedral and Cradle levels. I think it'd be a shame to have those go.

As for a modern setting - well, it'd be interesting. I would quite like a game with all the flexibility of Thief but set in the modern day. It would be fresh ground, though, and it'd be pretty much a completely new game, with very few ties to the originals. I'm not against it, but it wouldn't really be at all comparable to the Thiefs we know.

I don't know what everyone has against Thief 3. I'm a huge Thief fan and was a little worried when 3 came out. Looking Glass didn't have any part of it and they change several aspects of the game. But if you keep an open mind to change it's still a very good game with the same spooky atmosphere in many of the levels (like helping the girl in the asylum).

I also just read thief 4 is being developed along side Deus Ex 3. My guess is they're probably going to use the same engine, but for god sakes lets not end up with two more Deus Ex 2 games.

Thief 1 had me in the training bit, and lost me with the vampires or whatever that came around later on. Just got too silly for me. Why can't I just be a thief, and have that be that? No wacky monsters, I just want to steal stuff in a game without being sent off to save blah from blah .

While I agree with your opinions to some extent; I cannot say I agree that the zombies, tricksters, ghosts, and all of those nocturnal creatures in general, made the game less enjoyable.

It is true that sneaking and stealing amongst humans (guards) was way more fun than trying to survive and go by un-noticed in the cathedral, or lost city (levels from Thief 1). But to me it was such a thrill when you first met the zombies. You had to either knock them down with the sword, or find a fountain of holy water and use the water arrows to kill them.

I found this to be immensely entertaining (mostly because it was the first game I played that had zombies). In the game I am currently planing on making (when I get time and willpower to do so), which is a Thief clone (with inspiration from Thief 1), I will be sure to add the zombies and other creatures in it. It just isn't Thief if they are removed.

But the best thing about thief was the AI. I could play around with it all day, building levels in DromEd with different properties set to the AIs (some were on my team, some were against eachothers, some had a lantern to search the dark corners and etc.). The AI was simply brilliant! And in Thief 2 this was greatly improved, and they even had motion-captured animations!

Anyway, I'd better get back to work now.

The supernatural stuff is fine, in the right setting. I mean there's nothing wrong with a bit of gothic horror here and there, but then it becomes the game. You know what I mean? - in Oblivion for instance you might find a dungeon full of Goblins, and in the dungeon you'll find lots of Goblins to kill, but when they are all dead you can get back to fighting humans or Dreinei or rats or whoever.

If they'd stopped at zombies then I would have been happier, it's the dinosaurs and crap that comes later that really takes the biscuit. I would much rather kill the zombies then get back to thievery, instead of going through the predictable monster roll call.

If they are putting it in a modern setting, then I guess they'll leave the supernatural stuff out this time round, unless they're really desperate to have zombies and co of course.
Personally I think that a modern day New York rooftop setting would be ideal, lots of interesting detail and architecture, massive playing area possible... all those old apartment blocks from the 50's would make a great setting I think.

Like Lukas W said, the zombies and stuff didn't actually make the game less enjoyable for me - it was just a problem when the zombie levels became more common than the "proper" thieving levels.

I think removing even the Burricks (was that their name? The dino things) would be a real shame. They were pretty alarming, especially since you can kill them with a sword but you'll probably choke to death on their toxic breath. But... I just hope they keep such levels in the minority, and have more "Life of the Party" type "proper" levels.

I thought Thief 3 had a good story, and it was nice to see the City in high-detail(ish) 3D. But the City itself was much too "normal" - I mean the buildings were mostly stone castles or cottages, with none of the weird multi-coloured steam machine things and giant metal angel statues from Thief 2. The gameplay, too, was quite good but the fact they played around with the map system and had to put in loading times for the Xbox was unfortunate. Overall a good game, though. I just wish they'd kept rope arrows

Well, I can`t follow ya all with your opinion about thief.

Honesty, I never played thief one or two, BUT I played and I loved Thief 3. (Ive had a great High Res Texture Patch for it, it looked great)

I loved the athmosphere, and all these details they had with the charackters and their religions and unique ways of speaking. There was enough steling for me, and the Fantasy stuff they added rounded the whole things up.

I know, there where a few bugs and the enemies where as smart as a dead fish (even on hard). But it was one of the best Games I ever played.

Much better than Splinter Cell in my opinion, it has had more soul!

P.S: i found this thread while I was looking for the Maximum Size of a sig...someone hel please?

600x120 is the max size, file size concerns only really apply to animated signatures.

Darth Kiwi,
I think that the reason for the weird stuff (architecture and statues etc.) that we saw in Thief 2, had mostly to do with that influential person.. which I can't seem to remember the name of at the moment, but who had a major role in the story. He had this vision of bringing steam controlled.. machines? into a general persons life. However the keepers saw something else, and figured he was evil, so Garret had to kill him.
Now that he is gone, it would only play natural that his creations disappeared as well. So in Thief 3 we didn't see any of that stuff.

But it's been ages since I played Thief 2(I always play the first game) so I can't remember much.

Karras?

I would love to play either one of the games, but for whatever reason not a single Thief will work for me on XP. Thief 3 did at one time, but typical software updates always break my old games over time. And compatibility mode never works for them.
