I recently built my computer and went to start it up and remembered on thing: I had no heating installed and the CPU didn't come with one. I started it up anyway, and heard a beep 5 seconds later, I waited for another 30 seconds then it made a sound of a buzzer alarm (like a deep pitched noise then a high pitch and so on). I unplugged the PC form the PSU and opened up the case, whilst wearing an ESD wristband. I couldn't see anything wrong so I stupidly decided to touch the CPU and burnt my finger and the first thing came to mind: "Heatsink".

So I rushed down to PC World and asked if they have a Heatsink which supports an AMD Processor, but they said that a motherboard/GPU cooler might work. I got home and opened the case to find a fan which was equivalent to that on the motherboard itself. And that is my question: Would a Motherboard Cooler work on a CPU? I have considered about buying an official heatsink but from what I've heard, they're pretty pricey. Any ideas? The specs are:

2GB RAM
ATi Radeon 4550 512mb DDR3 w/ HDMI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400
Excalibur ATX Case
abit AN52S (or something) Motherboard
22x SATA DVD-ROM CD Drive
160GB SATA Hard Drive

Isn't the regular setup a heatsink and a fan mounted on top of that?

No, for some reason I just received the CPU and that was it. There is a frame around it to fit the heatsink but I never received one at all.

-EDIT- If you're talking about how the computer came, it was a D.I.Y. so therefore I built it myself

Since most GPUs can cool themselves, it's likely that GPU cooler is designed to be an additional measure for keeping a GPU cool - which means it may lack the RPM to effectively cool a CPU (to prevent unnecessary noise, it will likely be slower than a CPU fan if it's an additional measure rather than the only cooling mechanism). It does not state the speed, however, which makes it very difficult to tell.

EDIT: Also, I'm generally confused by your situation. You didn't fit a heatsink to the CPU to begin with? As in, you left it completely bare? And how come you didn't have a heatsink and fan lined up ahead of time? They're pretty critical components

You're very lucky your CPU is not a metallic paste.

I have a PSU (duh ) but I basically forgot about the heatsink (it was my first time doing a D.I.Y.) so I only remembered when I started it. So, I'm guessing it's a no and get a heatsink then?

Nope, not up for discussion. You need a CPU heatsink designed for your processor model. Hopefully your processor still works.

Yeh it hasn't disintegrated (lmao) but it won't boot (it display the splash screen but remains there). One more question: If the motherboard supports up to DDR2 memory, does that count for the GPU as well? If so,, I'm screwed and I've found the answer tot the question I asked. THew GPU is a ATi Sapphire Radeon 4550 DDR3 (what I'm concerned about) 512mb. SOrry, I'm not used to DIY PCs and it's my first time .

Lol, and I found out that the DDR requirement on Motherboards is only for the RAM and not GPUs (so you can have a DDR3 GPU on a DDR2 mobo). How does the 4400+ run? Is yours a 2.3GHz Dual Core?
