Woo! One of the greatest indie games (my opinion, I'm not stating it as a fact) has released a new build that the fans have been waiting over half a year for.

Among the new things:
Crazy lua scripting can be attached to anything in the game, not just units = now insane mods can be created with homing weapons etc.
A bunch of new missions
A TON of new levels
A bunch of new weapons (rocket propelled chainsaw. yes.)

For those that don't know:

Cortex Command is an awesome game that's been in development for over 7 years and won two awards at the last IGF. It features insane physics, making EVERYTHING destructable. You can burrow through the ground and tunnel into someone's base, blast off someone's legs, fracture a skull into shrapnel-bits, etc.
Cortex command is also in the indiegames.com top 50.

You are a brain in a bunker, and you control other units to try and destroy the other brain.

Just thought I'd let you guys know,

Nice. Might have a closer look at it later.

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.

Wasn't too impressed. The concept is good, but (even as a WIP) the OS X port was annoying - kept sporadically hiding the mouse when on the menu, ALT+ENTER don't work as bindings for OS X (had to randomly key mash to find it was Fn + Ctrl + Cmd + Enter) the text was tiny and unreadable, and the tutorial was very uninformative ("Pick up the gun" - yes, but HOW do I pick up the gun?) - Oh, and the controls for accessing the command/buy menu didn't seem to work at all.

For seven years work, it was incredibly anti climatic

It looks interesting, I'll give it a try some time.

@David R: Try it on a more suitable OS.

Believe it or not, the tutorial and text size aren't dependent on OS

Why mention the OS if it's not relevant then?

It does seem to be a common problem that OS X ports aren't really that good. What was really quite amusing was that we ended up running a Quake3 dedicated server on a XP netbook because it was more stable than the OS X version. It's not Apple's fault, it's that the developers can't be bothered with such an unprofitable platform.

You report bugs without saying what OS you're on? I pity the devs who have to handle your reports

I already have reported those bugs. After doing so, I decided to summarise my experience into my post.

Again though, seven years work. Seems as ineffective as DNF if you ask me

Text too small?
The game is meant to be played at 640x480 or 800x600 resolution, for retro-style gfx.

Tutorial too hard?
Yeah, the tutorial does suck. But once you figure it out it freakin' rocks.

OSX port has issues?
Sorry, but since when was a mac for gaming?*

Make sure your mac has right-clicking turned on - the right mouse button is necessary for things like picking up guns, etc.

* = More stupid mac hatred by me. In all seriousness, the game does play better on a pc, but you should email them and try and figure it out.

I suggest you guys try it out. Me and my buddies play splitscreen regularly with gamepads (much better than a keyboard/mouse for this game) and there are many great and hilarious moments that arise during gameplay.

gibs!

Cortex Command is great. My friend bought it, and it runs great (There are glitches with the buy menu). I only have the demo version, i don't want to shell out money on it, because my computer can hardly run the game.

The really cool part about cortex command is that you can easily make your own maps, weapons, and characters (well... maybe not easily). If you don't want to do that, then theres a load of community developed levels, characters, and weapons (which is the best part about the game). It may not seem like much in the demo, but the ability to have any object be able to explode and physically interact with any other object makes for some great gameplay. For example, you could buy a bunch of random objects, and fly a dropship to the enemy base, and drop the stuff onto the enemy's entrance, so that they're trapped inside! Or, use a digger dropship (user made content) into their base.

It's a great game, but it does have issues.

Yeah, I love the ridiculous amount of mods available.

EDIT: What buy menu glitches? I've never encountered any.

I played with most of the low end resolutions, and they were all incredibly difficult to read. It may be retro, but that doesn't mean the text needs to be unreadable

Yes, it does have right clicking on. But what the heck is it to do with picking up guns - how do I pick guns? It doesn't say, and there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to do so

Yay! I've been waiting for build 23 for some time now.

EDIT: The new version is great! Some awesome new weapons, cool effects, and the new missions are a nice change from constantly chewing on the repetetive zombie one

@DavidR:
Make sure you aren't resting your finger on the left side of the Mighty Mouse. The side of click is determined by a touch strip and if you are resting your finger on the left side whilst clicking the right it presumes you wanted left. You might want to use a proper mouse or better still a keyboard without a messed up layout. (Why is the tilde key next to the Z and not the tab key?)

To pick up items, stand over them, hold RMB and push up.

I'm not using a mighty mouse

Indeed, the MM sucks. Which is a shame, because I really like the keyboard - ignoring the non-standard layout. If they got the MM up to scratch, they would be a good pair of included peripherals.

Does the tutorial actually say that, or did you find that out elsewhere?

I figured it out. A menu pops up when RMB is held. Moving the mouse selects different options. Found the "pick up" at the top.

If the fonts look unbearable on your system is it possible that the game is looking for Windows fonts and OS X is substituting something that doesn't scale well?

As I said before, the tutorial sucks - but the game rocks.

David R - Is your monitor widescreen? If so, set it to a 4x3 display ratio. Mine is easily readable at that resolution. Is it in fullscreen?

Hmm that's hard macs are not supposed to be fun

Other then that my friend kept pushing this game on me and I finally got around to getting it. I had to get the full version because I could not deal w/ 6min of skirmish. Really fun especially the physics!

djmaster - really? Is it lagging really bad or are you having trouble flying? I can survive for a decent time on "death" without that much of a problem.

DJMaster, I know exactly how you feel. Some tips;

*Use drop pods instead of rockets.
*Use your jetpack in bursts, holding onto the button will make you rocket out of control.
*If you're in a mission using a brainbot, bunker down, and get some bodyguards. Try not to move.

Ehh, are you holding the gun in the same direction so the aiming line shows up and you can precision-shoot? Shooting isn't hard at all.

'Course not, although it really depends on what weapon you are using and how fast the target is moving, but that only matters if you're at a very high position.

Personally, I prefer a heavy sniper rifle combined with some sort of automatic, usually a gatling gun although that makes you move much slower. Otherwise, just a gatling gun. The smaller assault rifles are pretty useless at anything other than mid range, unless the opponent has something shocking like a pistol or smg.

When digging, I use the heavy digger. As far as I can tell it collects far more gold, the pulse digger is more 'cleaner' although it doesn't suck up as much gold.

I love this game
