I don't think a halfway powerful laptop has been made in ten years that is capable of maintaining a sensible temperature.

Does it really need to be a laptop?

Agreed, laptops are for students and businessmen...My wife bought this $2k laptop about 4 months ago (Asus gaming laptop, supposedly one of the best)...and I've never seen a computer crash, explode and reformatted so many times...but maybe it's just that brand

Desktop ftw.

Thats a latest version what I've got: Gateway P-7811. It's a beauty! Very reliable. Keep in mind though, its a "Desktop Replacement" meaning it's 3 1/2 hour battery life is below average. Think of it as a portable desktop! I love it very much!

Plus with a desktop you can upgrade parts as the computer gets older or even if you can't buy all the part right away. Better to go desktop IMO.

Don't bother getting an ultra powerful machine if you actually want to run it as a laptop - that is, from a battery. My laptop is a modest, but still decent spec (2.1GHz Core 2 Duo + 1GB RAM + generic integrated video) and I can just about squeeze 4 hours of battery out of it.

I can't imagine much more battery with the specs you're looking at, which may render it useless as a mobile machine

EDIT: Your screen, and the GPU (especially with the 1GB GDDR in the GPU, which means continutal power required for main memory + the GPU's. Whilst that isn't much power, it stacks up over time, especially off of a chemical cell) are going to especially power hungry. Not so sure about the processor.

Dell owns Alienware now. I'm not sure if that's the reason why I haven't heard very many recommendations about them in a while or what, but that's my guess. Maybe Dell tainted Alienware's line?

If you do get a laptop, I recommend a Dell. HP should stick to Printers, Compaq is LOL, Lenevo is eh, the list goes on. I have a dell and they have good quality laptops with good quality parts and service.

But, like I said, stop and think about what your doing. Do you need a laptop or would it just be something cool to have? It seems more logical to me to get a desktop.

I have a HP laptop and I really like it. Only £399 and 4gb ram 250g hard drive. Nice graphics card and runs all my games smoothly.

Your one of the few then. And tell me, is the laptop made of that famous HP smooth material that shows your finger prints to no end?

Yes, It does show my annoying finger prints. And I made the mistake of eating some doritos over the keyboard. I like the laptop but not the material.

I concur with some of the other good posters here; does it have to be a laptop? It seems like you want to have a gaming pc and desktops are probably better suited for that.

That is one sweet laptop for the price, if you must have a laptop.

I almost bought one of those for myself. One gripe - why are PC laptops nowadays so damn garish and ugly? Those brushed aluminum Macbooks are beautiful. But I'd be embarrassed to be seen in public with most PC laptops - shiny plastic with ridiculous colors, yuck.

I'm more interested in rugged than beautiful because a broken laptop is useless. The earlier Eees get this right; thick plastic, thick bezels and hard-wearing sandcast ABS plastic. Shiny plastic looks awful after two days. Thin plastic cracks. Slim bezels bend. Small hinges crack. Non-passive cooling jams up. Hard drives fail.
