I just formatted my computer and went to re-download VCExpress 2008, and all the other stuff required for DarkGDK, but all the download links on Microsoft are broken o.0 I managed to find a VCSetup.exe elsewhere, but it still has to download from Microsoft, and returns an error when it fails. Anyone else having this problem? I can't even download that Genuine Windows Validation thingy which is required to download the SDK.

Bit of an update, I was able to successfully download the same files from a different computer...so something about my system ( Asus lappy running XP Pro ), is causing the links to be broken. ><

Is there perhaps some sort of 'virus' that prevents you from downloading from Microsoft? Though that sounds more like an anti-virus...*cough*

Hmm, upon running the conficker removal tool, it claimed I was virus free...perhaps there is another problem ><

No, when I would click download, it just gave me a URL error. I reset my computer back to the way it was right after a fresh install, and it works now, so who knows what the problem was. ><

Same with us, we have the Conficker Worm as well, stopping us from visiting any Microsoft-related sites. It disables BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) which is the main reason why. Here's a video explaining about it: Conficker Worm - Symantec.

-EDIT- Saw your last post, you may not have removed the error but might just've weakened it .

BITS is used by Windows Update (and a few other components) and is nothing to do with downloading via HTTP in a browser.

Well, naturally, you must pay an appropriate fee to the anti-virus company behind Conficker-C. If any other removal tool could actually remove it, they wouldn't make much money out of it, now would they?

Install Linux to your computer temporarily, until this whole Conficker thingy is gone.

AV companies make free tools to remove a vast quantity of 'big name' infections. Especially since (in some cases) the infections can kill your AV - so the tools are also targeted at users who have had their AV program crippled by the infection.

Also, because each tool needs to do a full scan to root out each infection, it makes it inconvenient to rely solely on those tools (especially since you lack on-access protection as well) so there is still an incentive to buy + use AV.

I used the Blaster removal tools a few years back (provided by Symantec) and they worked fine.

@David R: I was being sort of sarcastic. Still, don't you sometimes get the feeling that most viruses / etc. malware are actually being developed by the AV companies, just to give people a reason to buy their latest products?
My computer hardly ever had any issues until I installed a more wide-spread AV than I had before, for instance...

@Rudolpho

It's not that hard to discover it yourself. Best way to check if you have the Conficker is insert a USB or other storage device and check if it has an autorun.inf file under 32kb, then it's the infection . Luckily we don't have it (bleeding Norton 360 ) but there's a corrupt file stopping BITS from working.
