Technology is advancing so rapidly, whats next? Downloadable smells!

How cool would that be. Running late for you date and don't have enough time to scavenge your room for your cologne? Just download one and you're good to go.

Is this even possible? Post your thoughts.

I actually heard something about this... Trying to remember how they said it would work... I'll google about.

Assuming nuclear fusion reactors become small enough and commercially available, yes. Perhaps I'm taking the long road, but in order to assemble the various chemicals to make a cologne, you'd either have to transmit the necessary compounds via tubes of some sort, or have some sort of 'atom smasher' that could construct the chemicals from lighter elements on the spot(and generate a considerable amount of energy to boot).

On the other hand, there is a patent for a perfume patch, which would not solve your dilemma but seems like a rather good idea for solving the fragrance-overdose problem that so many elderly/insecure people seem to have.

If the technology to synthesise materials on demand was cheap and portable, don't you think it would be wasted on producing cologne?

I have never been there, but surely one is enough.

That said, I would use it to make a rather large tree for unspecified purposes.

I would like to send you a download of poo. In fact, let's make a virus that makes your computer have some really rancid farts.

Somebody creates innovative technology and you have already found a way to pervert it for your own gains.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

I would be interested in such a thing.

I would rather have this: Person in China puts a brand new GTA4 into a super cool fancy thing, the box starts to dissapear, converts to data, then he sends it over the internet and in USA the reciever atomizes it back to a normal thing again. That would result in extinction of postmans and delivery.

That smellovision thing isn't really what I was aiming for.

Pretty sure if they could make downloadable smells, they would have a virus software too, to keep all of you poo-people out of business.

Now all we need is this technology in video games and Rare could remake Conker's Bad Fur Day, imagine the infamous Poo boss not only with the operatic masterpiece of a song, but the ability to fill your sense with the different kinds of poo.

You guys are gross.

Although to also be able to taste the poo boss would be nice.

I hope you're aware that you have just perfectly summed up the internet.

83% of women tested found Pus in Boots irresistable. (Based on a survey of 172 women.)

Well, aside from the technical dificulties with actually downloading a smell and assemble it, it would depend on the application. For example, in games like Bioshock, would you really like to smell the corpses? Or in Left 4 Dead, I for one would never want to smell how it smells after a Boomer has vomidated all over me, lol. And I know these are not downloading smells, but rather about the assemble process. Anyway, I am sure someone might come up with an constructive idea not involving poo... maybe. Some people never leave that age, you know .

So, personally, I cannot see any use for it, but that does not mean there won´t be any in the future.

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.

Check your email.

Perhaps you could download smell credits? But I can't see how you would get a smell to travel over the phone lines, cable or satellite for thousands of miles and not dissipate.

Maybe a atmosphere pack that installs in your computer like a floppy disk and releases sounds and smells dictated by the program. Or maybe as a part of one of those gaming chairs that tilts and rumbles, but when you fart the chair says... "That wasn't me!"

Brian.

I'm thinking it would send data, and that data would control how a box or something compiles a certain smell.

There's obviously a latent untapped demand here.

I suggest TGC sniff out various options, and as soon as they get a whiff of something announce Dark Smells (although Dark Aroma might sound better).

In fact someone ought to start a new coding challenge to see who can create the most convincing image evoking specific aromas - without using media of course.

Shaders don't count as media for this purpose.

Yup, that is the long road. The shortcut would be to have a few cartridges of "base" smells, then mixing them (as a printer does with ink) to produce the wanted smell. The human nose isn't very sensitive, you probably wouldn't need many cartridges to emit all humanly detectable smells.

And what would those "base" smells be? Ammonia?

Well, I'm guessing it would be wise to include "Poo" as a base smell...

Ah, yes, but "poo" is a very vague term as there are many subcategories and varieties. If your turds smell like elephant droppings you should see a doctor or stop eating elephant dung.

Why not just plug an electric cable into your brain that gives you the illusion that you are smelling something? Much less hassle than synthesising poo from a mixmatch of chemicals. Besides, can you imagine what would happen if you tried to download and physically create the smell of chlorine, hehe

If you see a thread of mine in GDT, please don't expect it to go anywhere.

No idea... that would need some research.

D'oh, I should've thought of that. It really is no hassle at all, opening up a head and plugging wires in.
