Hi everyone. I would like to know if this is mt video card again, this started about 30mins ago and i cannot really see what i am typing. Here is a pic i took of the forum while i was posting this. I have NO idea what is causing this. This is not the first time this has happened. I just want to get over it as I have less than 2 weeks to submit my entry into the FPSC contest.

thanks

Ummm...Screen tearing?

But yes, most likely your video card.

RickV's name looks a bit odd lol...

How the hell has that happened? Try closing Fallout 3, that's reported to have caused artifacts on the screen when switching windows. Otherwise, try rolling back your GPUI Driver and re-installing it. What is your Graphics card?

@ SS G: Fallout 3 was a folder. what you see there is all i had open. i dont know about screen tearing, because it occurs full time, not as flashing on/off. I restarted my laptop and it has gone for now. lets hope it stays this way.

thanks

Generally, those are overheat artifacts (or damage already caused by overheating). Check your GPU is being cooled correctly.

D'oh, damn custom logos . Lucky it's gone for now, but I think it may be a problem with the settings on your GPU.

it is being cooled properly, my normal temperature is 70 degrees celcius (core idle temp.) and when i play games, it goes up to 80 degrees.

yes, like a volcano. maybe my GPU temperature diode has burnt out, because i get a reading of 0 when i use speedfan.

thanks

70 degrees, my GPU in my other DIY PC (Sapphire 4550 DDR3) runs at 32 degrees and runs at 52 degrees approximately when running Enemy Territory... Seriously, buy a GPU cooling fan and put it on there before it melts.

-EDIT- You really do need a few fans for Fallout 3, especially for the AUXFAN and GPUFAN.

Ouch...Perhaps try a different card with better cooling? Try looking for GPUs with this thing on them:

The black thing is a cooler built onto the card, they are pretty reliable.

-EDIT- Try looking for a Mobility version with an in-built fan. There should be one.

Darn...Sorry, I'm not used to laptops, I've only modded towers lol . I'll see what there is, what GPU are you using? Check by accessing dxdiag if you do not know what it is.

Ah, not a very reliable card IMO, I have a friend who had that, played Crysis and it overheated 5 minutes into the game. I recommend entering the BIOS and increasing the fan power in the laptop (there should be a fan control in the BIOS). If that doesn't work, I'm out, I'm afraid .

ah, yes, another bad thing about these acer laptop is that the bios' main features are disabled. like hypermemory and fan speeds. i have already looked.

thanks

Now that is silly, what if you had a fan failure, replaced it then had to set the functions correctly? Acer really need to get their head into gear, it's 3 people I know now who have had problems with Acer laptops...

Definitely not normal...

If you want to get into the BIOS fan settings I think it's possible to flash the acer BIOS, of course that voids the warranty and you'd probably have lots of other driver issues so I don't really recommended it!

You can get laptop mounts that have fans attached to help cool your laptop that bit better.

Also out of interest what model number is your laptop?

i might leave it for acer. thats another think the didn't listen to me on. i specifiically told them that the video card was on it's way out, they said "yea yea".

thanks for the help, i realize it could have been screen tearing, but maybe not. it was pulsing, like lightly, then it rose to become heavy, infinitely. when i restarted my laptop, in the bios i noticed a couple of wierd dots also.

thanks

Screen tearing is an incredibly minor, barely noticeable effect that occurs for a split second when playing (fast) movies or videos (where you can see half of one frame, and half of another: normally only with fast movement occurring) - that's why V-Sync is used. There's absolutely no way in hell your problem is caused by screen tearing

Your problem is unfortunately very serious - or at least, I would bet it is, especially since the effect is not consistent (and the random pixels are clearly corruption - especially the black in the top right)

EDIT:
For reference, screen tearing looks kind of like this:

The problem corrects itself the next time a frame is drawn, provided there isn't a continual lag/backlog

Now when i use sketchup, it only runs for about 30 mins, then it freezes completely for about 5 secs. I get weird lines across the bottom of the screen (sketchup window), then 1 min later, the computer freezes. If i then wait for about 3 mins, i get a BSOD. Man, i have already lost several hours of 3d work recently, even at school this occurs. I feel the base of the computer, and it is only warm. It is not hot to the touch.

PS: I got the response from the DFT, they are sending it in for repairs for the third time. I am going to make a destructible acer laptop and release it for free, just to release my anger and hate for this stupid thing.

thanks

Would this happen to be the same Acer laptop you made two threads about?

Give it a rest Toasty Fresh. If you don't want him to go on about his Acer, then don't provoke him.

It's mostly likely overheating, when I've had my laptop on my lap whilst in a warm environment I found when playing a game like Fallout 3 or The Last Remnant that the exact same thing happened for me - my laptop felt quite warm playing them, so it seemed fairly self-explanatory - I even got the blue screen where it says 'graphics card drivers have failed' where the computer restarts itself. Keeping it cool since, I've not had the problem.

I'd probably recommend something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEWLink-Laptop-Cooler/dp/B001380EU4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1243851121&sr=1-3

I don't use one, but my sister has one as after prolonged use or your laptop will get hot, particular when its on top of your thighs, consider the heat from them will rise...you could also just try using it from a surface.

Or if you've tried those sort of things, then your GFX card is not keeping itself cool enough. It could well be the drivers too, try and nab a driver update if you have already and then try to replicate the problem to see it if happens again.

Similar thing happens on my desktop whenever Oblivion tries to do refraction. Strangely Unreal can do it fine.
