some large high res. textures ( space stars, asteroid fields, black holes etc), you can basically make a large image, use dark basic to make the sphere (a very large one), texture the sphere with the space image.

As for your ships and space stations etc you'll need a 3d modelling program like anim8or

http://www.anim8or.com/

or somthing more sufisticated which will offcource need some ching ching.

but anim8or should be cool for beginners. Since i't a basic space game, you'll basicly need lots of spheres for plantes and the odd plane for say rings round saturn. still stuck then shout out again, i'll be glad to help

or something

Hello

I'm also really new to Dark Basic, but I also want to do a Space Shooter. Thanks for the original question "raptor" and thanks for your reply "hexgear".

Now I hope DarkBasic, anim8or and the 3dGames program will get me to my design goal, a space-mecha shooter.

if you don't like anim8or, there is also
http://www.milkshape3d.com <- Milkshape3D
http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax <- Gmax
http://www.aliaswavefront.com <- MayaPLE
http://www.wings3d.com <- Wings3D (open source)

i'll post some more as soon as i can remember the address's ... check fileplanet has a few of the free or in the works modeling packages.
also http://www.cnet.com will have some free versions of trueSpace, 3D Studio Max, 3D Max, Lightwave, Simply3D and Extreme3D.

For creating a Space Game i'd stick to the builtin objects for alot of things, just make the textures or nick them from NASA.org

One tip - don't keep starfields in bitmaps. It saves filespace to make them at runtime, then add in galaxies, nebulas or whatever. Also the way you make the background depends on the type of game, if it is 2d then a large plain will suffice, if it is 3d then you'll need to make a skysphere and mess about with aligning the images properly.

Why would anyone not like anim8or?
