I was just wondering, does anybody know of any tools or applications that excel in creating 2D artwork that appears to be made of clay/plasticine?

I would just use "textured brushes" (in PSP or Photoshop) but they lack the sort of 'blob edge' that clay and plasticine get

I ask, because I'm rather interested in a "clayish" look for the artwork in my current project, but I would really like to see how it looks in-game before committing to clay/plasticine purchase + camera and light setup + model making etc.

So anyone seen any tools geared toward oddball artwork like this? Or any specific techniques to do this in Photoshop/PSP?

Well, it's 3D but lambert shading always reminds me of clay. Don't know why.

Hmm, with an orange tint to it, yeah, that sort of does it. The thing is though, it lacks the sort of "organic" feel to it if I do it in 3D (non-uniform cruves, finger prints etc.)

I really need something that can show the unevenness of the surface without having to manually apply it...

Which probably means I should just go an get some plasticine and not bother testing it before hand There doesn't seem to be anything that gives a clay-ish look at all, other than that kind of shading (or noise reduced rendering) - both of which are too clean looking.

I know the workflow for the recent Street Fighter game involved creating all the characters in 3D, rendering out the animations from the side, and then they went over, frame by frame, adding in a more hand drawn effect to them.

If you include that idea in your workflow, you can easily create an awesome clay feel in your favorite modeling program, render it out from the side (with an alpha channel), and then use that in your game. That seems like the best route to me!
