Ok, so this will probably be frowned on but I shall ask anyway...

I am being asked to do backing vocals for this band I'm in, clean singing I can do - but I really can't get the growling technique sorted. I know that you have to use the diaphragm and tighten the throat so it kind of sounds like an old man dying. When I do this it feels as though it is there, but it kind of feels extremely dry and it's more of a rasp. Does anyone have any clues as to what I'm doing wrong, perhaps I need to drink more before trying it?

Any help is appreciated, thank'ee.

Yeah man, I'm in a hardcore band and we've got a shot at going commercial! Anyway...

To really do a good growl, you want to hyperventilate yourself first. Breathe out 3x, each outward breathe being at least 3-5 seconds long. You will feel light headed...don't worry. Then, breathe in as much as you can and let out the growl. It helps if you tuck your chin into your neck, as it allows for the saliva to mix in with your vibrating epiglottis. And, just do as you said with the whole diaphragm thing. If your using your throat at all, your doing something wrong.

If you have a very camp voice, I'd wager the death growl will only ever be a pipe dream.

There are two types of screaming that most metal bands use. Inward screaming and outward screaming. To practice inward screaming inhale deeply and try to start whispering. It will feel really weird at first. But the more you develope it you'll start getting that gutteral growl. Outward screaming is just the opposite but create a total different sounding oftten higher pitched scream. A good dvd the lead singer of my band started using was the Zen of Screaming. It is taught by the lady who has been a vocal coach for Bullet for my Valentine, Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, Silverstein, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Slipknot, etc etc. The techniques sound really goofy but help learning how not to destroy your vocal chords while screaming. I am a guitarist though so what do I know about vocals lol.

If you use the hyperventilation technique suggested here, remember that hyperventilating can actually seriously harm you

Really though - it can. It can actually reduce the level of blood (and hence oxygen) reaching your brain, as well as screwing up pH levels in your blood. So make sure you don't overdo it.

Well thank you all for your advice, obviously there is no definitive technique for Death Growling xD. Somebody else recommended me the Zen of Screaming DVD so I might check that out, there are a couple of clips on YouTube and it looks very helpful.

Thank you very much

Just decided you'd throw that in there, eh Aaron?

Yeah, I tried to learn how to scream. I think my neighbors thought I was being attacked by a retarded werewolf.
