Lol.

Hey All. DD makes his return to the db forum.......
Below is a download of my Topdown Shooter(Think Alien Syndrome). If you'd be so kind, please play it(its less than 1 Mb to download) and then suggest some ideas for the enemies AI. They've got basic "follow the leader" AI for now though. Heres a list of features so far...

It took me about a minute to figure out that the line coming from their left wasn't a weapon but their health. It would probably be better to center that under them... where it's at now is too confusing. I love the way the shotgun blasts go and the 4th weapon instantly kill anything it hits. Keep up the good work.

If you REALLY want to try out some crazy ai stuff, look into genetic algorithms. Never got to that chapter in my ai programming book, but according to the intro to it, it is ai that changes to match the player's ability (Skynet anyone?)

The game is very good, and quite addictive actually.
As for the AI, what might be faster than A* or another type of pathfinder, is to set a few main paths that the enemies can follow if they can't directly get to the player. Like this:

Hi DD, it's good to see you back (remember me, I'm the one who did all that 3d animation stuff last summer )

I've just played Build three, and your game looks brilliant. There's some very nice AI on the enemies, I like the way they start to home in on you but only when you get close to them.

Only one query - whenever I shoot one of them with (say) the photon cannon, they seem to reappear lower on the screen with full health. Do I need to destroy every enemy, or is this just part of the demo?

Other than that, it looks great - although I think the pink/purple backdrop is perhaps a little much!

Nice game DD, I couldn't find the rocket launcher or any other guns apart from the pistol. What do you have to do to get them?

I noticed the enemy animation selects the wrong images, they appear to be walking up when they are walking sideways.
I like those enemies, you can easily outrun one and shoot him but a gang of them is quite hard to deal with.
I managed to get the other side of a wall and shoot them all, maybe you could develop that into a cover system .

Press 1-6 on the numpad if u got build three
Press 1-4 on the numpad if u got the others.....

It does get addictive, doesnt it?

Thats just part of teh demo......that auto respawn will go away when i get some missions, but there will be an "endless" mode for those who want to play that....

I think a time limit would be a good idea, and definitely doors on the walls - something to make it a bit more exciting. Might be a challenge on the AI though, making sure the enemies couldn't 'see' you through the closed door.

I'm not sure on spawn points, though. On a second play, I think the random respawn might actually work better (certainly as the game stands now) because then you get a nice spread of enemies. I remember the "iced" demo that came with DBC, and it was great fun until I fought my way to the mouth of the goblin cave, and then just blasted everyone the moment they appeared.

Oops, I misread the instructions that first appear when the program loads. I should have realised first time round!

Yeah I'm working on teh doors now. they'll be in the next build.
As for a timer.......well, i'll give it a thought. maybe something will pop up in the next demo.

Yeah, i kinnda agree with obese, but, for now i'll keep it random. This is because i feel that until I get missions theres no point

In my opinion the cooldown on firing weapons should be weapon specific and it should be faster on some guns. You should also be able to move a little bit faster and I dont get the sliding thing the character does if he moves too long and tries to stop. Oh and are u not supposed to be able to actually die?

This build's got the fps cap off. lemme know if it effects anyting!

Okay. New stuff.....

I've GOT NEW AI!!!! THE BOTS WILL NOW PATROL AND SHOOT WHEN THEY SEE YOU!.......Check that out.

3 of the Doors require keys now...

I've fixed the Door collision - You cant just go through now!
