I think the avatar's will come into their own over time, as new features are added like streaming sports events and more direct avatar games.
I'm in 2 minds about the whole thing, I don't mind having a 3D avatar as long as it's used for something, so my profile pic is Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, not some useless artifact of modern gaming fashion. I can see the potential, but for now, the extra hassle of the new 'dashboard' just slows me down - I find myself hitting the home key and using the quick menu there.
The problem is that you have to go looking most of the time, unless what your interested in is what Microsoft thinks gamers are into, worrying one right there. If a new demo is released then it should be on some sort of front page, with a screenshot, same goes for XBL games. Why is there no straightforward announcement history page, like practically every gaming website has. And here's something novel too, if an add-on for a game I do not own is released I don't need to hear about it, if there's some new songs for Rock Band or something that I'm interested in, then why not tell me about it. The stuff that makes it to the 'front page' is rarely relevant to me, it tends to be advertisements and videos for games that I can't even download demo's for yet.
Ohh, and why can't they offer any useful information about a game - not expecting a hint telling us how much it sucks, but there's no reason why the can't list some cheat codes for those that want them. If XBL is designed for gamers then it was designed by a fairly boring gamer. If you get bored with a game, it should be the case where you can look up some more info, like see if there are any easter eggs, things like the location of the UFO in Fallout3, Diamond locations in Farcry2, vehicle spawn numbers for GTA4. It's stuff that doesn't ruin the game, in fact the vehicle spawns for GTA4 make it infinitely more fun, spawn a helicopter, find something high to jump off, land and spawn a Sanchez, ya hoo.
IMO it should never be a case of liking or disliking it, you should be able to get it working however you like it to work. Maybe the question really is, should it be better already given Microsofts experience with UI's. Maybe they should start asking, and stop telling us what we want. Their image of a hardcore gamer is a 12 year old American with ADD, unlike Nintendo who assume everyone has ADD
